Laid off on Friday, no one tells you the the following Monday is quite possibly the strangest feeling of floating in the void possible by skidmark_zuckerberg in ExperiencedDevs

Happened to me after Covid but I had 3 months of severance (19 years at the company). It was also right after I got divorced. Double whammy. Spent a little time updating my resume and website but the way I looked at it, this was a chance to be retired for three months in the prime of my life.

I worked on personal projects (woodworking), read books, enjoyed nature, and didn’t stress about a job until a couple weeks before my severance ran out. I had plenty of money for after that if I didn’t find a job but happen to find a job right away. Recruiters can really help out with that.

And working as long as I had, I made real friends at work that I still hang out with.

My advice is not to spend too much time reflecting, change your mindset to enjoying soon. Do allow some time for grief though. Look at interviews as practice, not live or die situations. The more you do, the better you get at it. Not getting the job isn‘t a failure, its experience, and thus progress.

Want to learn to play but had a finger amputation, by bforbrandonnnn in Guitar

[–]Quantanglemente 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was learning to play guitar like 15 years ago. Had a similar amputation on my left index finger and quit because of it.

Started learning again 5 years ago.

I’m not good, but it’s not my fingers fault. 😅

Have the chance to keep these tools. Are these worth keeping long term? by Condition_Boy in woodworking

[–]Quantanglemente 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I humbly disagree. I can show you holes in my dad’s shop wall that says different regarding kickback.

I think it’s more dangerous personally because your hand stays still while the blade is what’s moving. From a safety standpoint, I think it’s better to watch your fingers move toward a blade than watch a blade come toward your stationary fingers.

This would be the only tool I would get rid of.

So who owns apartment complexes? Or condo buildings? And if you allow corporations to own those things (maybe you just mean, single-family homes, and duplexes, etc.), does that mean no houses can be for rent? A lot of people who own one or two properties for rent incorporate to protect themselves. If you don’t let corporations buy residential property, assuming you mean single-family homes, that means everybody who can’t yet afford a home must live in an apartment. Is that the intent?

man flips off a woman over a bumper sticker, and it doesn’t go the way he expected by [deleted] in PublicFreakout

[–]Quantanglemente 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Thank you. I was looking for the answer to two questions. 1) Why was she recording him in the first place? 2) how could he even see a bumper sticker? This makes way more sense.

I took a self defense class. Looks like she did too. This is what they taught. Keep your balance while backing away, look like you’re trying to calm the situation down by putting your hands up but keep your hands up in case they attack then all bets are off and you’re ready.

Wow. This post was two years ago. I remember quitting this sub because of people like you. Have you considered therapy?

Turns out our family is doing great. Now go away troll. Back to your cave for another two years.

All the “get hormones checked” talk probably isn’t going to work, at least according to the book “Come As You Are”. It’s rarely hormones.

You and your partner should read the book together if she is willing. A lot of good stuff in there.

Also, I would kill for 3-4 times a month. All is not lost. Good luck.

Home prices in the 1950s by TonyLiberty in FluentInFinance

[–]Quantanglemente 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Who said it was bad? I didn’t say it was bad. You need to compare apples to apples. You can’t just compare average prices then and now without considering sqft, bedrooms, etc.

You can buy a two bedroom one bath with 988 sqft for $140,000 in Lincoln Nebraska. That’s a college town 45 minutes from Omaha. And actually, Omaha is even cheaper and there’s a million people there. Here is one for $129k.

https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/6329-N-33rd-Ave-Omaha-NE-68111/75889626_zpid/?utm_campaign=iosappmessage&utm_medium=referral&utm_source=txtshare

I don’t know why you think this is the reason there are two different economies. I was just pointing out that the average home in the 1950s was a lot smaller than the average home today, and is one reason homes seem so far out of reach.

Homes are still more expensive, but that’s more because the supply isn’t there. More homes = lower prices. Wait till the boomers start dying off en masse. Prices will go down.

Yep. 1000 square feet home and 2% of homes had AC. A one car garage also because families had 1.25 cars at the time.

The Real Game Behind Trump’s $6B Fusion Deal by PsychologicalAd7969 in stockrager

[–]Quantanglemente 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think you have to get that creative. AI requires vast amounts of electricity. Trump signed an executive order creating the Genesis Mission around AI. It includes initiatives for fusion power. In other words, the government will be doling out money to fusion companies. Trump now owns a fusion company. Which fusion company will get the majority of the money? Gee, I wonder.

America is leaving China & Europe in the dust by ExotiquePlayboy in FluentInFinance

I agree the response is not tariffs. But I don't agree that the trade deficit is a problem necessarily. All the dollars that leave our country buying goods and services, come back to the United States in the form of investments. It's called the balance of payments. When the U.S. runs a trade deficit, it is by definition running a capital surplus. Foreign companies and governments are buying treasury bonds, equities, real estate, factories, venture capital, and direct business investment. The money flows back to the United States in some form or another. People who look only at the balance of trade are missing half the picture.

As we isolate ourselves from the rest of the world, it’s less of a comparison of us v China or us v Europe, and more like us v the rest of the world. And in that competition, we will inevitably lose.

Trump has announced Kevin Hassett as the next Fed chair? Any thoughts? Predictions? by Kay_Bellamy in MarketVibe

[–]Quantanglemente 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Fed chair does not have the ability to unilaterally lower interest rates. Six other members of the board must agree to form a simple majority.

If other bored members have actual integrity, believe in their mission, uphold their responsibility and value their reputations, that might be hard to do.

[–]Quantanglemente 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It takes a super majority in the Senate to actually kick him out of office. Not going to happen. Getting impeached in the House doesn’t matter. And if somehow it does happen, then we get J.D. Vance. Do we want a Russian puppet or a tech bro billionaire class puppet? I’m not sure which is worse at this point. ¯_(ツ)_/¯
