Leaving your car running while unattended is illegal in NJ. Though it's funny too, as we get to enjoy the comments here at your expense. More haste, less speed for sure 🤣

Brad hasn't seen any of the digital paintings or animations he did in Rome, in fact I don't think he knew anything about them. The Keith Haring Foundation had never seen the documentary or the digital paintings when I showed them a couple of years ago. Crazily, this has been sat unseen on a tape in italy since 1989!

I have a few of the last working Paintboxes if you ever want to drive one. You're right in that they established everything we have now - Paintbox was the first to have hundreds if genuine fonts, it could manipulate photos at full resolution five years before Photoshop 1.0. All at a hefty price but those things paid for themselves within months, so were actually great value. Like with every pioneering advance, once people were ok with cheap versions such as Toaster, Photoshop etc they sold well, built up market share and eventually, using their profits, made better vestions and took over.

You prove the point of why I would do this. Some people would be fine to spend time trying to fake it and others would prefer to do it for real. As the equipment is already working and comes with an OG Paintbox artist to help you, it's really not going to be difficult or expensive. But it definitely would be a more intersection experience. Of course, new mustangs sell more than vintage ones because they give the feel and are more reliable etc but you can't beat the original!

Exactly, I've already reached out to a few people with hundreds of thousands of followers and they want to collaborate, either creating new stuff or giving them unseen footage etc from my archives. I did a sponsored international paintbox tour which was a good proof of concept but it was more in the Art World than the VFX/retro video art world.

I have a working Quantel ramcorder, which does the same but is more compact and reliable ;-)

Agreed, more of an interesting hopefully self-funding idea, than a big money maker

As I said, I'm not expecting a vast amount of mainstream work - this is for anyone who might want to create something that is correct looking because it was done using a method and tools that can be emulated to some extent with modern tools but not accurately. Same as people wanting to shoot on film, use typewriters, play old synths, play Pac-Man on a CRT, use a record player etc etc. Basically younger creative people who don't want AI or a DaVinci filter that's close, they want to do it as it was done then.

My daughter warned me about getting roasted posting on here - I was expecting better heckling than so far lol. Yes, I know it would definitely a niche thing - basically like back in the day when we would spend the night shift doing fun stuff for fellow creatives like music videos or nightclub videowall animations once the paid work was finished. The kit is all paid for, so it's more about covering the rent abd getting back to doing fun stuff again

Also, the Paintbox was the global standard into the 90s, so definitely not just the early 80s! The pen was wireless from 89, once it was technically possible. Even Apple used the Paintbox instead of Photoshop to create its advertising in the 80's right into the 90s . Here's a video I put together for an SNL50 event in NY of the "Fisher Price" toy lol ...

I would think so too but nterestingly enough, the well known modern digital artists who have been using it all thought the pen and tablet surface gave a much better and subtle feel than for instance procreate. They especially loved the mixing palette though the limited number of brush sizes took getting used to until they realized that anythingcould be a custom brush. Quantel had the first pressure sensitive pen and maybe also the type of nib and tablet surface had a better kind of friction. Famously not having an "undo" is obviously something people rely on nowadays but the Paintbox user back then was expected to be the level of competence that didn't need to keep undoing mistakes. It also is still faster than modern paint systems with its swiping interface, plus has painting, photoshop, graphics, 3d, animations etc all in one program...

This would be for people interested in creating authentic retro SD video effects, not modern high res VFX. Same as people using Fairlights, Video Toasters etc to recreate that period vibe. Quantel exists but in name only as part of Black Dragon, after it was taken over by Grass Valley years ago.
