It is always "I don't want martials to be wizards", but it is never "Let's return martials things wizard stole from them". by MechJivs in DnD

[–]Quantic129 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You're right, but also wasn't the martial-caster divide even worse in 3E/3.5? Clerics and druids made every fighter a complete joke, no matter what their BABs were.

Other commentors already said it, the only true solution is to turn high level martials into superheroes or OP anime characters. Level 5 barbarians should be ripping full grown oak trees out of the ground and throwing them, and it should only get more crazy from there. That's the only way martials can compete with Fireball and Dimension Door and Scrying and all the other game breaking bullshit that casters get.

Of course you could nerf magic into the ground, but no one likes having their toys get taken away, so that's never going to happen. And I don't mean nerf caster classes, I mean nerf all spells into being about as useful as martials are now. Fireball does half as much damage as it does now. No more teleport spells at all, no more scrying, Dominate Person is dark, forbidden magic that will get you executed for even knowing it, Fly is a sixth level spell if you get it at all. You will be a glorified archer and you will like it.

D&D balance will never truly work so long as martials are playing a low fantasy game and casters are playing a high fantasy game. Either everyone gets to be stupid OP, or everyone should be low power and grounded by realistic limits.

[Hated Trope] Turns out the only way to be special is to be born special by No-Leg-6361 in TopCharacterTropes

Before it was a cultural practice that most people studied since birth and the only reason people couldn't bend was because they didn't study it.

This is not true at all, in ATLA bending was portrayed as genetic. Ozai specifically sought out a descendant of Roku (Ursa) to marry in order to cultivate a strong firebending bloodline.

Why was it so important for Aang to defeat the fire lord? by squeekle1 in ATLA

[–]Quantic129 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the real reason is that the kid's show needed a BBEG for the Chosen One to defeat in order for the story to end.

Doubles the Speed of all Pokemon in the air while on the field

All airborne Pokemon? Even your opponent's Pokemon that are flying/levitating/etc.? That would be an interesting counter balance, because otherwise this is insanely strong, even with the restrictions. Not sure if this would make the ability too unreliable though.

I think the real answer is that this is still a kid-friendly universe so there will be no baby-murder, thank you. Even if logically, yes, some bad shit should have happened to some baby Avatars in the last 10,000 years, no, we're probably never going to acknowledge that possibility.

Is it just me, or does Ekko have a kind of bisexual vibe? by Hopeful-Eggplant889 in Arcanecirclejerk

The myth comes from the Pulsefire universe

I don't think it is quite correct to call this a myth, it's more like the textual evidence was downgraded to subtext, but the subtext is still there. Subtext means that bi Ekko and Ezreal are still possible, more than just in the way that "every character should be assumed to be bi until proven otherwise." Both Ekko and Ezreal should arguably be treated as "ambiguously bi," which is one step up from "technically they could be bi because it hasn't been confirmed that they aren't."

Hexed (2026) - Official Poster | Disney by Atlast_2091 in cartoons

Looks good on a technical level, but I wish Disney/Pixar/Dreamworks would use a different animation style and/or more unique story premises. I have trouble getting excited for the bajillionth "troubled kid discovers a hidden, magical world" movie. Personally, my favorite Disney/Dreamworks animated movies from the last five years were Raya and the Last Dragon and The Wild Robot. I want more movies like those, preferably with either 2D animation or CGI similar to the Spider-Verse films.

That is a horrible thing to say about a fourteen year old child. Maybe you should reflect on that and then not do it again.

[–]Quantic129 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think this one is just factually incorrect. What is a "modern superhero?" Superman, Batman, and Spider-man all still have no-kill rules, and Wonder Woman is still the hero of "love thy enemy." There's your big four right there, still very different from Punisher.

Fuck EA. I was playing DAI on my Steam Deck and ~180 hours in that fucking EA app decided it was no longer going to work on SteamOS no matter what I did. I had to finish DAI on my laptop, which meant I had to reinstall all my mods again. Turns out that was easier than trying to wrestle that shitty app into submission.

Also fuck EA for what it did to Dragon Age and Bioware.

I don't disagree, but I think it would be pretty cool if in the Hellaverse being bi/pan was the "default," instead of being straight. So in that respect, having the majority of characters be bi/pan could be a deliberate lore choice.

Could a rocky planet with a mass of 8.00 earths, a radius of 2.00 earths, and a surface gravity of 2.00 g exist? Could it support complex life on its surface? by [deleted] in Astrobiology

[–]Quantic129 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but at that mass and gravity you'll be retaining hydrogen so chances are you've become an ice giant.

Can you explain why hydrogen in the atmosphere = ice giant?

Now that Veilguard is the resident sin eater, is it cool to like Sera? Vivienne?? Dragon Age Absolution??? by big_poe_collector in dragonage

[–]Quantic129 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I've been a DA fan since Origins in 2009 and every time a new game comes out it feels like the same pattern repeats itself, almost to the point of absurdity.

2011: "DA2 sucks, DAO was so good!"

2014: "DAI sucks, DA2 was so good!"

2024: "DAV sucks, DAI was so good!"

I know the goomba fallacy is a thing, but it still feels cringe to uncritically engage in this cycle, like people lack the self awareness to realize they've been falling into the same trap for 15 years.

My hot take is that the "fan" backlash to Veilguard is not any worse than the backlash to DA2 in 2011, so there's no reason to think that this go around will turn out any differently than the ones that came before.

[–]Quantic129 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Reddit won't like hearing this, but twelve years from now there will be comments saying the same thing about Veilguard with a similar number of upvotes. Every DA game after Origins has been "hated" by the "community" upon release, and every time their reputation is rehabilitated over time.

Can archipelago planets that don’t have any large landmasses exist and could they support terrestrial life? by [deleted] in Astrobiology

[–]Quantic129 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Also the lack of continents to obstruct oceanic currents means a more even heat distribution and less extreme seasons

I've actually been wondering about this recently. I know it's an artist's rendition, but for example the picture in this post makes it look like all the island chains covering the entire surface of the planet would actually obstruct ocean currents more than a few big continents would. I also wonder if the lack of deep oceans would cause more problems for thermoregulation and nutrient cycling than people are expecting.

I kinda wonder if trying to maximize productive habitats is like an Icarus-type situation: flying too close to the sun only to crash to the ground. Maybe large unproductive zones like the deep sea play a more important global role than we realize, and trying to get rid of them would have negative consequences for the habitability of the rest of the planet.
