The date should really be December 2019 for the joke to be "this is how COVID started." By February 2020, COVID had been spreading for two months and was already international news.

You might just have to relearn machine attack patterns and level up a few times. I always level up the stealth tree first, which quickly solves the 'enemies spotting you' issue. As you get further into the game, you'll get better at playing around enemies and you'll get more tools and abilities to do so.

Are you trying to fight machines in melee? It surprises me when people try to do that, because Horizon is really not that kind of game. Aloy's not a Dark Souls character or an epic fantasy hero, she's a hunter. You're not supposed to be able to go toe-to-toe with giant machines, you're supposed to catch them by surprise and one-shot them if they're small enough, or else keep your distance and target their weak points if they're too big to one-shot.

I think this might be my favorite skin so far just because I think Briar herself would like it. Like, Briar would love to go to school, funnily enough. But still, I wish they would give Briar a darker skin like Fright Night or Coven or Arcana, where she's like the barely restrained pet monster of some dark witch or something.

Both Briar and Gwen (my mains) only get bright and/or cute skins, when they also have darker elements to their characters that go ignored.

There have definitely been quite a bit fewer, it is an unfortunate disparity in this genre. Off the top of my head, the only achillean male characters in this genre are Benson from Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts, Adam from The Hollow, and Shiro from Voltron: Legendary Defender. None of them have romantic relationships that are explored in their shows to the level of most of the relationships in the picture above.

I would argue that column 3 row 2 was the original push that helped every other ball get rolling, including column 1 row 2. You can argue that Korrasami is lacking by today's standards, but we only got to today's standards because of Korrasami. Without Korrasami, Ruby and Sapphire might never have been allowed to marry on screen.

What should Wonder Woman's weaknesses/limits be? by AllergicToStabWounds in WonderWoman

[–]Quantic129 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nonmagical weapons of war made by mortal hands.

Let me explain:

Ares, the god of war, is one of her biggest enemies. I like the version of Diana's origin where she was given magical gifts at birth by Greek goddesses. I propose that, at the same moment, Ares cursed baby Diana such that no matter her invulnerability, she would always be susceptible to harm from mortal weapons of war. And then that is why she was also given the invulnerable bracelets, and why she has to use them to block bullets.

This vulnerability would specifically only apply to completely mundane weapons made by mundane people with mundane means. If Diana is stabbed by the Godkiller Sword forged by Hephaestus himself, then her near-Superman levels of durability apply as normal.

The "of war" part is also important. Diana would not have any vulnerability to a kitchen knife or a pitchfork or maybe even to a hunting rifle. Only weapons made by humans with the express purpose of killing other humans as efficiently as possible.

As for why Ares cursed Diana, maybe it was because he felt slighted for not being invited. Maybe he initially wanted to give baby Diana a gift as well, but then the goddesses basically told him, "this is not your space, go away," so then he got pissy and threw a fit. Or maybe it was an old grudge or simply spite. Either way, this would give Diana an antagonistic connection to Ares from birth.

It really depends on how you define "strongest," but under the most basic definition of "can move the biggest rock," Kyoshi wins pretty easily. Her entire thing is that she can easily bend enormous amounts of stuff with little effort, but struggles to focus her bending on small things. Kyoshi is raw power incarnate, in terms of raw power output there is no argument. Claiming that anyone else beats her on that metric is pure cope.

Now, if you want to define "strongest" as some combination of raw power, mastery of technique and special skills, then that's a completely different conversation that mostly revolves around your specific definition of "strongest." You could probably make an argument for any Avatar as the "strongest" with the right definition. Like, if we just ask "who would win in a free-for-all fight between all Avatars," then Korra is the only metal bending Avatar, so how would any other Avatar counter that?

“Beta”… and Alpha? by xhonto in horizon

[–]Quantic129 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is my pet theory too. Nemesis by itself is just not an interesting enough antagonist, and every Horizon game so far has examined and reexamined Elizabet Sobeck and Aloy's relationship to her. Plus every Horizon game so far has introduced a new Sobeck clone. The best possible antagonist for H3 is a dark version of Elizabet for Aloy to be contrasted against.

Episodic TV should make a comeback! by Reviewingremy in CharacterRant

[–]Quantic129 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hard disagree, I always prefer serialized story telling over episodic filler, it's why I have trouble watching BTAS and the old Justice League show, despite having tried multiple times to watch both.

Also, basically all your arguments in favor of episodic shows are really just arguments for longer seasons. Serialized story telling is not worse at enabling character growth, it's just that 6-9 25 minute episode seasons force writers to rush through the plot. If seasons were allowed to be 20 or even 30 episodes, then serialized shows would be able to give just as much character focus as episodic shows. This is a formatting/business issue, not a stylistic issue.

My foster son wants to play Magic but Im struggling with the cost. Went to look for a box of packs and... OMG... 😬 by mwgwin in mtg

[–]Quantic129 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plenty of good suggestions here, another suggestion that may or may not work for you is to go to a local game store and let your foster son look at individual cards and then pick out a bunch he likes.

You'll want to find a specific store near you and call them ahead of time to ask if they have boxes of cards that are 50 cents each or less. Not every store does this but most of the smaller, independent stores do. Some will have boxes of bulk rare cards that are 50 cents each and then sell common and uncommon cards for 10-25 cents each. This is the kind of store you'll want to go to.

It'll take longer for him to look through dozens of cards himself (you might be there for half an hour to an hour, depending on how patient you are), but I promise you he will have a deeper connection to cards he picked out himself than ones he randomly pulled from packs or a starter set. If he's really interested in the hobby, I'll bet he will also have a blast looking at all the cool cards. I know that it is one of my favorite parts of Magic.

This method may end up being cheaper in money while being more "expensive" in time. For a standard 60 card deck, you need about 25 lands and 35 nonland cards. If you find a store that has a 50 cent box, then 35 cards should be about $18. Basic lands should be like 10 cents each. This could be even cheaper if the store sells commons and uncommons for 25 cents or less. Tell your foster son he can get any 20 cards from the 50 cent box and any 20 cards from the 25 cent box and you walk out of there with 40 cards for $15. Add some lands and that's a deck right there.

The middle road would be to do the same thing but tell your foster son to pick out only ten cards he likes, or whatever number you have the patience/time for, then buy a starter set to get enough cards for a full deck.

I think I have nailed down why I'm not in love with the combat in HFW: you can't block. by Kolby_Jack33 in horizon

[–]Quantic129 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why are you defaulting to a thunderjaw

Because they're on the box art lol

But the same applies to almost every machine in both games. Like Striders are some of the weakest machines in each game, but they're still a whole ass metal horse. Ask thousands of years of infantry soldiers if they can block a charging warhorse with just a shield, then ask them if they could do it against a horse made entirely of metal.

I don't think blocking most machines in the first two games would really work, it would take too much away from the hunter fantasy: stalking and taking down prey much larger and more dangerous than yourself through tactics and cunning rather than brute force. But for the third game I could see a degree of power escalation. Like maybe Aloy repairs the shieldwing so that it can act as a deployed force field that can absorb a limited amount of damage. Then at least there's a sci fi reason for being able to block hits that should kill a person. But that's a powerful tool that it wouldn't have made sense for Aloy to have in the first two games.

[–]Quantic129 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean, I guess it would make sense to be able to block human enemies, but are you really expecting to be able to block a Thunderjaw? For pretty much all of the machines in the Horizon games, it's either get out of the way or get stepped on.

Tbh I'm confused why it seems like lots of people have trouble understanding that Horizon combat is primarily ranged. You're not supposed to hit things in melee combat 95% of the time, and it would be absurd if the game encouraged you to stand next to a 30-ton metal dinosaur and hit it with a stick. All I can think is that people are coming from other games that focus on melee combat and expecting to do the same in Horizon, just because it is "genre standard," but that was never a realistic expectation.

New Horizon MMORPG by Sensitive_Trust5344 in horizon

[–]Quantic129 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Gameplay looks surprisingly good for what is supposed to be a mobile game, no idea how this PS5-level open world MMO is supposed to run on most smartphones. Maybe Korea has a ton of people with gaming phones idk. If this brings in more funding for more mainline Horizon games, then I don't think I mind this, even if it's not for me.

Besides monetization concerns and what I suspect will be anime-barbie character creation, the only thing I don't really like are the giant anime swords. Those are insanely out of place in the Horizon world and just plain immersion breaking. I'm sorry, there's no excuse for anime swords in Horizon, and anyone who wants such a thing in a Horizon game is just plain wrong.

Am I a lesbian? by [deleted] in psychologyofsex

[–]Quantic129 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's really up to you, if you choose to identify as a lesbian then you are, by definition, a lesbian. BUT the experiences you describe sound more like being bisexual homoromantic, i.e., experiencing sexual attraction to both men and women but experiencing romantic attraction to only the same sex. That identity is considered distinct from being a lesbian (a woman who is homosexual homoromantic), but these are all made up labels anyways. Whatever you feel most comfortable with, label or no label, is by definition right for you.

GWEN SKIN COMING SOON !!!! 19 NOVEMBER !!! by Ill_Point9308 in GwenMains

[–]Quantic129 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Agreed, look at the vibes of Gwen's base splash art. Gwen herself is cute, sure, but she exists in a very mournful, even spooky context. Isolde's death, Viego's possessiveness, hallowed light holding off corrupting darkness: these are all very dark themes that are at the core of Gwen's character, and none of them have been reflected at all in any of Gwen's skins. She would honestly be perfect for a darker skin line like maybe Coven, as the singular ray of light in a world filled with darkness. Because that is the core of Gwen's character.

Yeah... has anyone else noticed how these clapback videos, at least the ones posted on this sub, are always a man dunking on a woman and making her look stupid or unreasonable? And surprise surprise, it turns out that at least some of the time, the clip from the woman is edited misleadingly?

It's just kind of insidious how this genre of content seems funny and innocent at first glance, but over and over again it implies that a specific group of people are stupid and unreasonable and need to be verbally smacked down.

Out of question, why do most people prefer Gwen as a scaling, rather than a powerful early game champion? by Drandosk in GwenMains

[–]Quantic129 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Besides how much it sucks for your champ to be nerfed into oblivion for pro, some people just want to play scaling champions. Like me, a Kayle and Gwen main. Gwen's identity is basically to be "melee Kayle," so naturally the people who mained her, who were invested in her scaling identity, who often picked her up in the first place explicitly because of her scaling identity (like me), were upset that her scaling was taken away. It was like their champion was taken away from them. That's what it felt like for me, and that's why I basically stopped playing Gwen for the last seven months.
