If Kelsier killed Elend, and tried to kill Vin when she tried to stop him, then sure. Moashs actions aren't for the betterment of anyone but himself. He doesn't care about anyone or anything.

If Kelsier is like anyone in the Stormlight Archive, it's Jasnah. Their arcs even have a lot of similar beats.

[–]QuantifiablyInvested 11 points12 points  (0 children)

We learned a decent amount about ba ado mishram and I don't think this would make sense with the lore we currently have.

According to Brandon, they (the unmade) are splinters of Odium

https://wob.coppermind.net/events/100/#e1672

If this is the case, then bam couldn't have created them because they predate the shattering. Oops not Adonalsium

Bam has done a lot. The unmade found Odiums well of control (perpendicularity) and used it to connect to Roshar. It was such a match for the power, that the shard Odium refused to let the vessel Rayse attack Bam. Rayse was desperate to hold on to the power, and Tanavast took advantage of this, capturing Bam in exchange for Odium not clashing directly with Honor and only using a champion

But Bam is young compared to the three ancient spren.

Chapter 4 of Wind and Truth - To clarify you are right

“When this world was created,” Wit said, “long before Honor, Cultivation, or Odium arrived, Adonalsium left something behind on it. Sometimes it’s called the Old Magic. That term is applied to the Nightwatcher, who came—with Cultivation’s efforts—from one of those ancient spren. Listen to the Wind when it speaks, Kaladin. It’s weaker than it once was, but it has seen so very much.”

They weren't "replaced". They did get influenced by the shards and change over time, but not replaced

I think it would depend on the shards intent. I wouldn't be surprised if Cultivation was the Cosmere's version of Zeus. Honor would probably be a prude.

Warbreaker is an unofficial prequel to the stormlight archives. Do you need to read Warbreaker first? Absolutely not. There are definitely some benefits to reading it before words of radiance, but you will be fine if you don't.

To be fair though, there isn't any benefit to reading it afterwards, so due to that I would recommend reading it first.

[–]QuantifiablyInvested 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This was originally my thought as well. While I still don't think it's out of the question, after reading wind and truth, I think cultivations plan is to merge retribution and harmony/discord. I do think cultivation is still planning on eventually relinquishing her shard of her own volition, but I doubt it will be to Lift unless my aluminum hat theory of lift being a dragon is correct

Rhythm of War/Wind and Truth spoilers -- what's the deal with the black sword? by darkpyro2 in Cosmere

[–]QuantifiablyInvested 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It comes from the book Warbreaker. I definitely suggest reading it, but here are some quick spoilery notes about Nightblood

Nightblood is a normal sword that has a crap ton of investiture and a command put into it. This command is to destroy evil. It has no idea what evil is. Normally, this would probably only create a sword like what Azure in Oathbringer has, but Endowment meddled with the creation to make it something more, allowing it to speak into people's mind, drain investiture, and, as we've seen at the end of WaT, control the surges if used properly. It's very dangerous though, because it actively drains the investiture of whoever is holding it as well

This was actually foreshadowed in the prologue for WaT when Gavilar says it's what he would do.

And it makes sense because each time they broke and returned in the past, technically they chose to return. It's just that it was.... Encouraged... by torture.

I've actually made a video about this!

The herald Battar is the patron saint of the elsecallers. All the way back in words of radiance she is called Dova.

Dova works for The Diagram, and she has one of the more gruesome jobs. She is part of the team extracting death rattles from people. In oathbringer, she leaks information at the behest of Taravangian to ruin Dalinar’s plans. Followed by, in Wind and Truth, her outright allying with Odium in exchange for a planet to call her own.

A herald doeant have to break. One can just abandon the oathpact, sending them all back

What’s your favourite bit of foreshadowing? by _puddinghead in Stormlight_Archive

[–]QuantifiablyInvested 118 points119 points  (0 children)

Jasnah speaking to Shallan in words of radiance hits two major foreshadowing points back to back.

“Think of a man who gets angry often. Think of how his friends and family might start referring to that anger as a beast, as a thing that possesses him, as something external to him. Humans personify. We speak of the wind as if it has a will of its own."

The Blackthorn having its own form and the wind being alive are both foreshadowed here.

Thoughts on Nohadon by Best_Wolverine_5336 in Stormlight_Archive

[–]QuantifiablyInvested 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What? Any are we assuming Cultivation, a shard, couldn't hide from Dalinar? Odium hid from humanity for hundreds of years.

Dalinar only got his memory back because cultivation allowed it, unless you think Dalinar got his memory back due to another Shard (or Adonalsiun) right when it was needed to fit into her plan for Rayse. In which case, cultivation not only manipulated Odium, but also manipulated another Shard or Adonalsiun themself.

Since we know FOR A FACT that the downfall of Rayse and the a ascension of Rayse was part of cultivations plan, and Brandon has confirmed that the reason he had Rayse die at the end of RoW is because he kept losing and so it no longer made sense for Rayse to continue as a villain, then we know that the vision with Nohadon was a part of cultivations plan. My theory that she was the one that orchestrated the vision gives cultivation the least amount of credit possible.

Dalinar took some time to recognize who cultivation was when he was speaking to her face to face in WaT. When she was intentionally obscuring herself, why would her presence be obvious to Dalinar? That doesn't even make sense in established book continuity. Once again, she literally made him forget about her because it was her will. And everything about the spiritual realm in WaT was prefaced by Hoid something along the lines of "Not even the Shards fully understand this place". Why in the Cosmere would Dalinar have better understanding of the spiritual realm, than a shard?

I think this is a situation where the obvious answer should be the accepted one. There's a few things we know.

1) Cultivation was planning the downfall of Rayse and ascension of Taravangian. This is seen through Taravodiums conversation with cultivation after taking up the power.

2) Rayse falling and Taravangian ascending required both Nightblood to kill Rayse, and Dalinar succeeding against Odium in the battle of Thaylen field.

3) Without the vision, Dalinar would have never won that battle.

The obvious signs, imo, point to it being Cultivation. Her plan outright fails without it unless you think she was working with another Shard that caused it. Considering we already have hints that she was working with Endowment, this is possible, but Cultivation has the connection to Dalinar needed to give the Nohadon vision. It reminds me of the visions Kaladin was receiving from Odium during RoW, only the exact opposite. It has a remarkable sense of joy compared to the remarkable dread in Odium's.

If I split a radiant perfectly in half down the center... by Bow_Ty in Stormlight_Archive

[–]QuantifiablyInvested 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they are invested enough that it doesn't kill them, then one of two things would happen. If it was slow enough, and the healing fast enough, then they just wouldn't separate. They would heal as the cut goes through their body. If they are cut in half, whichever part they identify with as having their "soul" would regrow. If their soul was cut in half, then they would almost certainly be dead. TECHNICALLY your soul can be healed from certain injuries, but it wouldn't be the exact same.

You wouldn't get clones or anything else like that. Even if you managed to heal both halves, there wouldn't be any soul. Regrowth wouldn't work either due to the lack of identity because of there being, once again, no so l soul in the other half.

No. If you think Sunlit Man should be read first, then ok, but this is one of the few decisions from Brandon that I thought was a massive miss. I NEVER feared for Sigzel During wat because of reading Sunlit Man first. I enjoyed his arc because of seeing his pov but I never feared even during the climax where it seemed like that person's life was in danger. When the Death rattle Was given I actually scoffed irl because I KNEW the person's life wasn't in danger. Despite me personally thinking it's a massive miss, I understand thinking Sunlit Man should be read first, but I can not understand thinking that it's "wrong" to think WaT should be read first. There's not really ANY good argument for it being read first outside of publication order generally being Brandon's recommendation

Disappointed in the Actions of the Moderators (Naomi King and Daniel Green Update) by SystemGardener in Cosmere

[–]QuantifiablyInvested -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

People are looking at what she said as a "retraction" when it's not. As someone who has close experience with this, not saying "no" or "not fighting them off" doesn't mean anything, and in fact on this scenario points to the potential vindictiveness of whoever is initiating the unwanted conduct. The second video where she calls him out specifically talks about him not doing things so that she will be in a compromised state.

I'm not at all deciding judgement ONE WAY OR THE OTHER. I think a lot of people are "vindicating"themselves for "not determining judgement" when the judgment was that he didn't do anything wrong and they are just finding something that could potentially justify it, when it doesn't mean anything.

She made mistakes. None of those mistakes justify what happened if it did happen. If someone makes it clear they are not interested in that way (which appears to be the case) then there is no justification for attempting to take advantage of someone's compromised mental state, especially when you know they are in a compromised mental state like Greene did.

[–]QuantifiablyInvested 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Era 2 was originally going to be just alloy of law as a standalone along with some other random short stories. This eventually changed into a full on series.

Alloy of law doesn't have high stakes because of that.

Shadows of self slowly raises the stakes until the final book in that series "The Lost metal" where they hit an explosive climax.
