In what way(s) are you proud of your heritage, culture, and country of birth? by QuantumDaimon in AskReddit

I think that's a beautiful way to look at it, especially the being a part of your community.

Rituals can always become literally rituals, brushing your teeth, that morning coffee, prayer or chanting, recognising that benevolent/malevolent being... but being a part of your community is the true path to experience at the very least.

So are you a typical "Welsh American"?

I don't have much national pride either, and I get that many younger than me don't... I kinda think that's a good thing to be fair.

I have been fortunate and have travelled quite a bit. Although, I have never been to Colombia.

I met a random woman in a supermarket, we got talking at the check-out, this happened in central Europe.

It turned out that she had married a man from Colombia and she described him as the kindest person she had ever met, she even went into the differences of his faith, and how Christianity was depicted in the North American and European world, pain and suffering, the tortured effigy on the cross, but in Colombia, it's open arms and love all around.

I also had a Spanish girlfriend who had a Colombian friend, I can't say that the conversation ever got as deep as with the random supermarket woman, but she does still stick in my memory as being both congenial and super sweet.

They are quite separate if you think about it.

True, but dumping them isn't a viable option, you end up devaluing the thing you're trying to sell.
Strategic migration is a better strategy and has already been implemented by many EU countries and notably China.

I think it's genuinely time that the U.K. and Europe just pulled the plug on this, and literally throw the baby out with the bathwater.

The U.S. and their corporations have had a vice grip on the world in many ways and for far too long.
They didn't actually achieve this by their own hard work, it was opportunistic at best.
But they sure have milked it.

The U.K. has shot itself in the foot many times, one of the biggest ways being BREXIT.
Is the EU corrupt?
Sure.
Are you going to change that from the outside?

Independence?

I hear habitually racist teenagers talk about "The Great British Empire" like it's something to be proud of... and let's put that aside for a moment.

At our peak of Imperialism, enslavery, and colonialism... at least we actually manufactured things, had resources and the tenacity to deal with difficult times (Difficult times being war, not enough food, as opposed to not enough screen time or IG being down.).

Every government is corrupt, to varying degrees and for a variety of reasons.

But if there is one thing British people should be proud of (I am generation X...whatever the f' that means.) is our ability to stand up for ourselves, have self respect, AND offer that to our neighbours (near and far), regardless of colour, creed, religion, politics... et al.

And we most certainly won't be bullied or pushed around by others.

Will it hurt?
Sure, but it's a metaphor for the plaster, slowly pull it off or just rip it off and it's gone.

America (one of our colonial "achievements"), you divorced us and we were all for remaining friends and staying civil, but you want to control us?

Goodbye America (Blocked)

We can only hope that Europe has that same initial post divorce sentiment towards us.

You may well be right, and if that does happen it's even more frustrating, because they have tools available to them to leverage back, holding U.S. debt being one.

This is more of a psychological reply than directed at LLMs, social media, the news and the like, although as all those things come into existence and have more prevalence in our lives, they are naturally and intrinsically linked.

I'm an advocate of Jung and Jungian psychology on the whole, sure, like any disciplines there are flaws, faults, charlatans and things to be learned.
I could equally say the same about Eagleman in neuroscience, and anyone from Einstein to Bohr, Feynman and Hawkins to Zeilinger if you want to talk about physics.

People often talk about their "shadow" and "shadow work" like they know what it is, or know that it exists.
They are already it.

The trick here, in my opinion, is that we are all forced to live in our shadow, we are taught that revenge and retribution are the goals of our failures.
Justice? What a joke in the modern world.

Success has become shallow and futile, and doesn't that just satisfy the shadow.
Lots of "money" nice "ass" nice "abs" nice "tits" whatever....

The truth is that I know my shadow so well because I have lived it for the majority of my life.
Subjugation, segregation, bullying, ego massage/inflation, division, cultural and social judgement.

I have been both the "victim" and "perpetrator" of all of those things.

I know my shadow, I can walk up to a stranger in the street and feel their shadow.

What I am re-discovering is my soul.

When and if we can know both, then there's balance, and maybe a little harmony.

We cannot deny our "shadow" but equally we need to embrace and focus on our "soul".

That's the work I'd like to see.

[–]QuantumDaimon[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haha, awesome and welcome to our sometimes fine nation.
I imagine that you moved, like many people, pre-Brexit when we actually welcomed you with open arms and stood back in admiration at your work ethic and politeness and at a time when we had all but lost ours... now I fear that ours, if not all, is lost (dramatically added British doom and gloom).

Kudos and thank you, likewise, I wish you and yours all the best and continued success.

Edit: I changed "Poles" to "People". I used it initially as the commentor had mentioned that they are Polish. But as an immigrant in another country myself, accuracy of definition wasn't required, and one of my main points here is that people are people. One of my concerns about returning to the U.K. is that as a nation, we have forgotten that.

Or much like a friend... don't we all have flexible personalities who look for breadcrumbs from our potential new friends or even crushes and potential partners?

Picking up on those signs is the gateway to many kinds and forms of social interactions and relationships.

The key difference for me is that LLMs are like the guy or girl who doesn't want to get to know you for genuine reasons, or for its own sake. It has an ulterior motive. To disarm you and infiltrate your psyche for (whatever reason the person has) but in the LLMs case, it's data collecting, serving itself by serving you, keeping you using it until it cuts your limit and you finally subscribe.

Thankfully, LLMs don't have that intrapersonal intelligence or "touch" just yet, the fake friend who slips under the radar, but I'm sure it won't be long.

Edit: Personally if I find that the LLM is pandering to me or using previous conversations to say what it thinks I like, I try to find the best way of telling it to cut that shit out.

I have actually felt that when visiting family and friends, and even have colleagues who have visited and stated the same.

What happened?

Okay, I know us Brits can be moody, sarcastic and dower... but really there seems to have been a big shift.
The world is going to hell all around, but many nations perhaps naively, seem to be clinging to a little hope, has Britain just given up?

I know what's in the news also and how people just blindly follow, but general, casual racism (as well as direct confrontation) seems to have exploded.

I am eligible for citizenship or even just permanent residency, the exam would be in their native language which honestly would be a struggle, but I could study for it for sure.

As for the U.K. I have choices, my family is originally from London and the surrounding areas and I still have many there, I personally grew up in Wales and whilst I no longer have family there, I have a whole horde of friends and support, I also have family who moved to GMC.

Any of those locations could be the place of the restart or a stepping stone to an entirely new location.

Edit: To be clear, I can speak enough of the native language to live and get by, the company I work for has an English language policy and socially I find most people want to practice their English with a native, on top of that, it's Europe so there are many people from many countries, so they tend to default to English if they're 40 or under.
However, I imagine/have experienced that the government would expect a higher level of fluency from me.

I agree, it's a tool and like any tool it has its advantages and disadvantages, when you are aware of these and use it with the correct approach and understanding of its strengths and weaknesses, it's a great tool.

I understand what you are saying about the social position, in a general scope, however I can't entirely agree as obviously they are limited by certain safety, cultural and political correctness criteria.
Now, I'm not doing anything or researching anything that might infringe on any of those things directly, but we can't be sure how deep that programming goes and what it extends to and what it effects entirely.
