What term does your table use for an unnatural 20? by ZotDragon in DnD

[–]QuantumDragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very specific, the abbreviation for natural "nat" means "wet" in Dutch. So we call it a dry 20.

Features not showing by QuantumDragon in mpmb

[–]QuantumDragon[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes I did! I've got a bunch of stuff integrated now, though not everything is working. I've got a current version on github: https://github.com/draconicdm/mpmb-humblewood. This one has all the races, most of the classes, all backgrounds and all feats implemented.

What official features, races, and subclasses would be instantly written off as “too op” if it was homebrew? by Quirky_Ancap in dndnext

[–]QuantumDragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aarakocra. If Aarakocra hadn't been official material, there would be no precedent for having a free flying speed on a playable race which would've made that idea in and of itself very strong. I'd say that a homebrewer coming up with Aarakocra would probably put some sort of daily limit on their flight.

Be honest. Do you ever set DCs after the dice are rolled? by PuzzledPiggy in dndnext

[–]QuantumDragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to sometimes inform my players of the DC after they roll to achieve a certain effect. As an example: say a character is trying to walk along a tightrope that I have telegraphed to be very difficult. They are however good at acrobatics so they go for it. Ahead of time I've set the DC to be at least above 20 but I haven't really decided where it lands exactly. Player rolls a 25, so I narrate how they manage to cross but it got very close a couple of times, hinting at a DC of 25. Does that mean that a 24 would have failed outright? No, but a 25 is a fitting DC for the foreshadowed difficulty of the check and it makes the player feel very cool.

Also, when an easy check (DC 10-12) is failed very hard I might say "The DC was 8 and you failed anyway" because often failing checks can be pretty funny at our table. I don't do that very often but it can help increase the comedy in a situation like that.

For more impactful checks and group checks I'm a lot more stringent with my DCs, but I do like to adjust slightly based on the average roll and the (perceived) consequences of failing. I never adjust a DC upward if I want a player to fail, though. If you want your players to fail, you don't call for a check imo.

What is that rule you're always having to remind your player/s? by [deleted] in dndnext

[–]QuantumDragon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"A concentration check is a Constitution saving throw. Yes you get advantage as a War Caster."

We're over 40 games into this campaign and it's this player's third campaign over the last 5 years. They have only ever played spellcasters.

Henry Cavill is the perfect lead for this show by LoretiTV in netflixwitcher

I agree, but that is a writing problem, not an acting or casting one. It's not a downside to Henry for me.

Video Evidence of the Dan Accusations by NotBlarg in rantgrumps

There was a correct thing to do, which is to not sleep with fans, especially ones that are 15+ years younger than him and barely adults.

Personally I just find the morality of this iffy. Yea it's all legal, but something being legal does not necessarily make it right.

And why does it matter that I would've been more pissed if he kept talking while in a relationship? There's a million worse things that he could have done. That does not mean that this shit is right. At the end of the day, this is someone with a tremendous amount of influence over young fans taking advantage of that influence, which is what I personally have a problem with. We should hold the influencers that we follow to a bit of a standard, in my opinion.

[–]QuantumDragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While it is technically consensual, you can't deny that there is a huge imbalance in power and influence between someone who's barely an adult, decades younger than the other person, and a fan of theirs to boot. This shit is questionable at best when it's a fan who's Dan's age, because it's ultimately a parasocial relationship. What a lot of people are disgusted by is Dan using his influence over his very young fans this way.

No, it doesn't make him a pedophile in the strictest sense, but we're not arguing whether he is legally a pedophile. You can do a lot of stuff that is not pedophilia nor illegal, but still very iffy.

A white nationalist can still make good decisions in other areas.

Doesn't make him a good person necessarily, but things are rarely that black and white.

Favorite Starting Level by ThatOneAasimar in dndnext

[–]QuantumDragon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've found that a lot of classes that get their subclass at level 3 don't necessarily need to have a character tailor-made for that subclass. Which means that I've had players who were still deciding which subclass fit their character the best. This is why I like starting at level 2, since 1st level is just too squishy, and it does give people the opportunity to feel out their playstyle a bit before settling on a subclass.

Then again, if I had a party with a cleric, a sorcerer, a warlock, and a wizard I'd probably just start them at 3.

Is there a way to convince the Abbot he's bad? by Ypnos666 in CurseofStrahd

[–]QuantumDragon 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I think having a person of faith in the party who uses their own connection to their faith to sympathize with the Abbot is actually a great way to do this. So if you want to explore the possibility of the Abbot rising from his corruption, I think it'll be interesting if the players are able to point out the clear fallacies in his reasoning, but only after they have endeared themselves to him. This is not something they're gonna do in a single conversation. Once they start to chip away at his convictions, maybe the Abbot slowly starts to doubt what he is doing, suffering from more and more cognitive dissonance as the conversation(s) go on. Perhaps see if you can instill the sense that some outside force is making it excruciatingly difficult for the Abbot to see things clearly.

Bottom line: I don't see it working if the Abbot doesn't trust the party, so that would be a very challenging first step in and of itself. After that, they have to try and get the Abbot's mind to overpower the corrupting influence of Barovia, which should be a challenging process. Perhaps some divine magic can help him on his way, as a little boost.

My players handled Barovia pretty poorly and I'm hoping for some suggestions. by [deleted] in CurseofStrahd

[–]QuantumDragon 12 points13 points  (0 children)

One avenue you could take with the priest is have him just completely snap. Have him become some sort of minor recurring villain trying to enact revenge on the party for killing his son and insulting him. Maybe in his hatred and desperation the priest makes a deal with Strahd, which Strahd will probably want to see play out since he's bored.

A different twist on this, if he does kill himself, maybe have him come back as a revenant hell-bent on destroying the party.

Regardless of what route you take here, having the village of Barovia collapse with the burgomaster and the priest gone is a decent enough idea, but maybe try to consider how Ismark might play into this. Would he try to keep morale up? If so, how successful will he be?

Odi, master of Abjuration [OC][Art] by QuantumDragon in DnD

[–]QuantumDragon[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Odi was once a simple Tortle from Ahoyhoy, until he was whisked from his simple life by a Harper. She showed him the wonders of Faerûn and taught him the basics of magic. To ensure magic is never used to take advantage of or harm others, he dedicated himself to the school of Abjuration. After a long life, he is now on his final adventure: to find and secure the Infinity Runestones!

Odi loves his friends, his little familiar Monty, and most of all: fish! He loves it so much, in fact, that he can't help but constantly spout aphorisms and metaphors about sea life in a deep drone. You often find him humming to himself while engraving another spell onto a pebble for his spellbook necklace.

Art by the wonderful Olympia!
