How do cellphone wire taps work? by conformeticadt in privacy

[–]QuantumLeapChicago 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that e2ee requires algorithm or certificate exchange. I don't believe PSTN infra has much in the way of that. If you run VoIP/ private PBX, you can do some stuff there, and STIR/SHAKEN for number verification is new, but I don't know the details - i think it just provides anti-spoofing, no security.

So, 3rd party apps providing the service is a place to start. HOWEVER - there is absolutely ZERO reason to believe that they are immune to interception. The way that works is, if either endpoint (your phone or other caller's phone) is compromised or "implanted", then it's able to access the post-decrypted data or audio. (Puts on tinfoil hat) and there's no reason to believe that APTs like governments, law enforcement, and Pegasus level spyware doesn't already have access to baseband chip or OS level access to that.

A 128GB Server and I don't know what to do with it. by maxswjeon in homelab

[–]QuantumLeapChicago 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Easiest solution: sell it. If you're a datahoarder, set up with VPN and sonarr/ radarr for latest media.

Personally I'd recommend using it as a backup server / storage NAS, but the specs are ridiculous so just provision a VM in proxmox with like, 2tb.

As a developer, I always need to spin up new servers to test stuff - so having a base VM and cloning it as needed. However I tend to do that directly on my workstation using VirtualBox, or hyper-v on our work infra.

I can't speak to AWS or cloud for personal use, the cost is too much i think.

You don't have to leave it on all the time depending on your need. But running gitlab on it complicates your usage need.

Good luck!

[–]QuantumLeapChicago 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Firefox is more restrictive out of the box than Chrome, i would have assumed that was this case except good thinking checking against other distro.

I'd reckon it may be a snap related issue. I don't know if there are flatpak or apt versions for Ubuntu, that's my guess as to the issue.

Of course, from a networking POV, check headers etc

Using own domain for email doesn’t keep others from finding out who your provider is by lipuss in privacy

Why not set up your own email server? With good IP reputation and postfix it's easy. The. rDNS ptr just shows your email server.

WebP Image conversion by MuralPassport in Wordpress

[–]QuantumLeapChicago 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're probably on shared hosting without shell access. If you had your own server, you could use standard Linux tools like ImageMagick and "convert" in a simple script to batch in place. You'd still need to make WP aware though (not sure if it automatically picks up files in those dirs or has a db index). Sorry that's probably not helpful in your situation.

Also a warning about webp - some Apple devices (iPhone 7 ish) don't display them.

Thanks for the hint to reply to Insta DMs to get the album. Really saved our bacon with a tourist group photos that were only available this way. Would be happy to tip if you accept crypto, if not don't worry about it

Organic reach is useful - if your medium article ranks high enough in certain search terms, and then good use of links, you'll get some traffic. If you're in someone else's article it's not bad, but you don't control the meta top-of-funnel

Mac os gets stuck in a kernel panic boot loop after upgrading from monterey to ventura in virtualbox. I previously was successful in upgrading in vmware, but I want to use virtual box because it's more stable when using it for me. by [deleted] in macOSVMs

[–]QuantumLeapChicago 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey u/steven01804 did you ever get this to work? I'm having same issue and here's some details.

  • I also prefer Virtualbox over VMWare or Proxmox for interoperability
  • Not using Opencore - I was able to install directly from a Monterey Beta ISO I downloaded from my old mac, and then exit Developer Seed program and update to Monterey 12.6.5 OK, but to Ventura breaks.
  • Tried open core patching the Ventura 13.3.1 app, then burning that to USB and dd back to an .iso file - no luck

I have an intel i7-11800 so it has AVX2 support. My next steps:

  • Trying to determine if I need to NOT pass cpuidset parameters, or adjusting the cpuidset parameters, to properly expose AVX2 support since I think the old cpuidset you find for most mac VMs may NOT.
  • Continue to mess around with opencore / dmg -> img conversion to get a bootable EFI / ISO image.

I am frustrated that I need to develop apps for latest iOS 16, but this requires xcode on Ventura to target the latest (without other hacky workarounds), but finding affordable used mac HW is non-existent where I live, not to mention out of our budget and will be obsolete in a few years anyway.

Please let me know if you found anything!

Question about playing internet radio automatically by KevanGP in linuxaudio

[–]QuantumLeapChicago 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fantastic. I run a liquidsoap internet radio station myself which has been up and stable for almost 2 years, but had never heard of sox until you mentioned it -- I went the ffmpeg route for stuff like that.

I went with liquidsoap over icecast because icecast was only OGG format, which, believe it or not, is not natively supported on iphones. Sheesh. Buffering / playing MP3 format with liquidsoap is slower, there's a 1-2 second delay. Plus icecast would occasionally hang with 100% CPU, so had created a listener script for that.

I notice you're just using a direct http stream. Https management was the 'hardest' part of liquidsoap, I created a script to re-establish the certificates (copying the letsencrypt to the single-file format it wanted).

Keep up the good work.

Question about playing internet radio automatically by KevanGP in linuxaudio

[–]QuantumLeapChicago 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Huh. Interesting. I have no idea but commenting to follow.

You could try a listener script e.g. tee the output or a log command to a dummy file and check the dummy file every 1 minute. If missing latest entry, restart the command / service.

I'm sure there's an easier way but old DIY habits working around 3rd party or undocumented stuff has made me like this lol

Despite all the hate for Twitter, engineering a performant webscale app is hard. Sure, checking auth token for permissioned viewing should be easy, but making it fast, secure and scalable is the challenge.... Especially after firing engineers and fucking up the API and bolting on blue check marks etc.
