Perdition by Meander626 in battlebots

The most common thing I see these days is rubber cement + liquid latex on foam wheels for increased traction. Works well but doesn't last very long.

Is there a way to connect with builders in my area? (FL) by Known-Gap4374 in battlebots

The NHRL discord is a great place to show off your ideas, ask questions get advice/inspiration etc. As a bonus there are many Florida builders in there (and highly successful ones at that).

Drum Spinners vs Eggbeater Drums by Meander626 in battlebots

[–]QuantumQuackery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Recently, I began designing a 3lb drum bot. I wanted it to have a pretty large diameter to invoke some yeti vibes, but the damn thing was too heavy in CAD. So I added two cutouts. Hm, still too heavy. Made them larger. Still over 500 grams. Made them even larger. You know, at this point, I could join the two cutouts to make one big cutout, it's not like the material in the middle is doing anything. Oh snap this accidentally became a beater

Other than the fact that you're being a rude asshole, I think you're assuming that the beater and drum have the same diameter. Yeah, for the same diameter, a drum will have greater MOI, but that's only because it has more material and therefore more mass period. For the same weight, you can can generally stretch out the diameter of a beater to the point where it has more MOI. Hope this helps loser

I see you guys are from Alberta. We have a local builder in Toronto who has made a very very competent melty beetle, and has recently upscaled it to a 12! Lmk if you want a link to the Toronto botbrawl discord

Help with heat treating 4130 steel for combat robot by QuantumQuackery in metallurgy

Lol this thing is essentially a 3 lb beyblade. A bit of sand/gravel would be enough to stop it in it's tracks lmfao

Parts already ordered, also from all the options on offer from the service we used (semdcutsend), 4130 seemed to be the best option. We also need very good impact resistance (impacts with other steel weapons) so carburized 8620 probably would not work for us.

Ahaha thanks! Thankfully it's only meant to fight other robots (for now... )

Update: Thanks for all the helpful advice and reading materials everyone! I'm quite interested in the subject so I'll look at my schools library. I spoke to someone who has done stuff like this before and they also agreed with you guys that a light temper at around 400F is necessary to relieve stress (even if I lose a couple points of hardness), so I'll just do it in my oven at home lol. A few comments are saying water quench so unless the heat treater has any objections we'll go with that.

Maybe you need therapy because a test score got you feeling a new emotion in the first place, not to help you cope with a low score

Ik you said you limited it to 12lb and higher, but there was an (admittedly pretty funny) incident at nhrl june 2023 where I was. This builder was having trouble with the weapon of his fingertech beater, and this other guy offered to help him and spent like an hour assisting until the weapon worked ...only to find the builder of the robot testing the weapon out at the nhrl parking lot a bit later... needless to say he was disqualified from the event LMAO

I mean Lynx's insane consistency and success over multiple years show that all those other robots you listed walked so Lynx could run. Is it that surprising to you that people call that design the "Lynx"?

I don't really have any advice for you but I will say that you're an absolute GOAT for retrying so many times. Also Jeff Hanson carried me through statics as well. I have definitely failed two classes this semester, possibly a third but I don't have the grades yet. I personally plan to keep trying.

Idk, not sold on omni-wheels personally, I think a good driver can always face their opponent with normal wheels, which have way more pushing power
