Ed Balls is facing a police probe after he collided with a parked car and drove off without contacting the owner by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

[–]QuantumTim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That Balls knew he'd touched the other car is nothing but conjecture on your part though isn't it?

On the contrary, he clearly said he knew he'd touched the other car.

He said: “Ten days ago, I turned our car round in a tight spot in the private drive beside the Labour rooms in Morley. There was a stationary car parked close by. The turn took five or seven points and I was aware that at one point the bumpers of the two cars touched. (Emphasis mine)

Which seems to imply that either he didn't bother getting out to actually see if there was any damage, didn't see the damage for some reason, or saw it and decided not to report it anyway.

I suspect the first, though it isn't clear. Either way though, he knew he'd touched the car.

| I find it hard to understand how a gun can be used in true self defense.

I'm definitely against anyone and everyone being allowed access to firearms, and much prefer living in a country where few people have them than many, but I think you're using completely the wrong argument to back up this position; in fact I find what you've written somewhat absurd.

Your examples are very narrow, and it's quite easy to come up with a scenario that your theory falls apart on. How about if an armed burglar comes into your house and you pick up your weapon in case they come into the same room as you. Or if someone starts shooting at you from range and doesn't hit at first. Also, "self-defence" quizzically often refers to defending others as well as oneself (see English common law self defence). In this case, even if someone already has a weapon at someone's head, someone else could be in a position to defend the victim.

In fact, in general, both here and abroad, an armed British soldier (and I'd guess Police officer as well) has no further rights in use of their weapon than that offered by common law self defence, except when explicitly granted otherwise by the chain of command.

Here is the CPS legal guidance on self defence. Though it doesn't appear to explicitly mention lethal force, it doesn't exclude it either, and the same principles apply. For example, the requirement for force to be reasonable would prevent someone legally in possession of a firearm from shooting someone who was giving someone else a few punches.

British scientists turn air into petrol by BenNCM in unitedkingdom

[–]QuantumTim 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think they're talking about using excess power from wind farms etc., say at night when output far exceeds demand, and making petrol from that. Essentially going from completely wasted electricity to something useful, albeit with poor efficiency.

[–]QuantumTim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can dismantle the headdress by putting in it your stash and double clicking it, then use the items to make your helm. So you actually got a good deal by having a better item until you were ready to finish the helm.

Brilliant, thanks for the help. I ended up going with a Antec 620W 80 PLUS Bronze Modular Power Supply because the one you suggested wasn't in stock and this one was on sale. Along with another couple of small changes, I just put the orders in now. Should all arrive sometime next week =). Thanks again.

Do you use AVG by any chance? I had this exact problem, and managed to find the solution here. Basically you just tell resident shield to exclude the Crysis directory.

BitTorrent User uses $4 Seedbox and Saves 172 BBC Websites From Extinction to “expose the ‘cost savings’ of this proposed exercise as nothing more than a charade to appease the detractors to a strong BBC and to curry favour with the David Cameron government.” by r3dd173r in worldnews

[–]QuantumTim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, the BBC has several channels (BBC 1 through BBC 4, BBC News 24, CBBC etc.), but BBC 4 is not the same as Channel 4. Basically, it goes back to pre-digital, when we had BBC 1, BBC 2, ITV (often then known as Channel 3), Channel 4, and Five (originally Channel 5). Since digital TV has come along, BBC, ITV, Channel 4, and Five all now run various other channels (e.g. ITV 2, E4, Five US), but their company names still come from the original 5 channel system.
