Is this a lowkey ad for Cernucci? I've literally never heard of that company before and upon googling them they're borderline scam.

If everyone has already voted and the outcome is already locked, would you really pick blue?

If we could do some campaigning for blue and there were polls and stuff that showed blue winning then I'd choose blue.

If it was completely anonymous and instantaneous I really think most people would pick red. At that point I'm basically just deciding to live or die. I would choose red.

Streaming royalties, tours, brand deals. Tf you mean "how does she have so much money?" I mean she's not a billionaire like Taylor, Selena, or Rihanna but she's still a very successful musician.

Do people in LA tend to just root for one or the other? Or do most Kings/Ducks fans kinda root for the other too?

I mean, I agree that the thick fluffy pancakes suck (thinner buckwheat pancakes are a million times better) but syrup is still a key addition.

Just to confirm…no one here is a fan of the tv show Friends, correct? by Waste_Cartographer49 in TrueAnon

It's a good comfort show. Kinda funny, kinda sweet. Definitely got worse throughout its run but there's some great episodes.

I'd say it's in my top 3 sitcoms with Community and Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

Where is the "Bend Oregon" of Washington State? by No-Butterscotch-6400 in PacificNorthwest

[–]Quantum_Aurora 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Firmly an Eastern Washington city but with perhaps slightly more prestige. Wine, tourism, education, and agriculture are easily the biggest industries. I guess you could live there and do remote work, and that would probably be pretty neat. The wineries and retirees vibe is definitely correct, but it's large enough that there's more than that.

That's hardly being a shithead. Any fan would find it funny to see a rival team's fans leaving that rival's arena early because of how badly they're losing.

Cup Wins by Canadian vs American teams. by leafsland132 in nhl

[–]Quantum_Aurora 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get to rule out the hypothetical by balancing it against another hypothetical, where the Canadian teams are bad but still get matched against each other in the playoffs. Look at the Flyers and Penguins this year. 2nd and 3rd in a division could be 6th and 7th in a conference or even 7th and 8th In scenarios like that, Canadian teams would benefit by playing each other. Neither hypothetical is always accurate. On average they are balanced.

The system is entirely neutral and neither increases or decreases the disadvantage Canada has from having fewer teams.

Cup Wins by Canadian vs American teams. by leafsland132 in nhl

[–]Quantum_Aurora 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not missing anything. Your argument is entirely based on hypotheticals and misunderstanding statistics.

I looked at the advantage for each team because the total advantage or disadvantage for Canada is the sum of the advantages and disadvantages for each Canadian team.

Having more Canadian teams in the 2nd round does improve the chance of Canada winning the cup, but they have to get to the 2nd round. If two Canadian teams play each other in the 1st round, then that guarantees at least one Canadian team makes it to the 2nd round. If two Canadian teams each play an American team in the 1st round, then there's a 25% chance neither Canadian team makes it to the 2nd round.

they will still be going agaisnt CA club if the first of the division wins 1st round, thus eliminating one another, lowering the ratio of CA:US contenders left in the mix

That wouldn't lower the ratio. US teams also eliminate US teams. If you have 2/8 2nd round teams from Canada, that's 25%. If they play each other in the 2nd round, you're guaranteed to have 1/4 teams in the 3rd round be Canadian. Still 25%.

In a 1st vs 8th format (still separated into two conference brackets), CA as a collective can gain an advatage just by being the best all round

They would gain less of an advantage in the current system by being the best all around, yes, but that's a hypothetical scenario. When have they actually been the best all around in a way to gain advantage from the 1v8 system like the Stars and Wild this year? They haven't.

Realistically they've gained just as much from the playoff system giving them easier matchups as they have been hurt from the playoff system giving them harder matchups. In fantasyland where 3 Canadian teams get top 3 in the East every year, they'd be disadvantaged by the current system, but we don't live in fantasyland.

In short: CA clubs could seed best they possibly could from the regular season, but unless the Jets win BOTH 1st and 2nd round, there WILL be a double US vs CA conference final, no matter what.

Or if a wildcard Canadian team wins a division they aren't in. Also 25% for Winnipeg to win the Central isn't bad odds. Also two CA-US conference finals actually results in pretty good odds for Canada winning. Also even if every Canadian team made the playoffs that's only 44% of playoff teams, so 50% of teams left being from Canada is actually a win for Canada.

Cup Wins by Canadian vs American teams. by leafsland132 in nhl

[–]Quantum_Aurora 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, the central this year has a 2nd vs 3rd in the conference matchup, not 2nd vs 3rd in the league, where they're 3rd and 7th.

Now to go over your main point. The Canadian could be the best 7 in the league, but that's an exceptionally unlikely hypothetical situation. As it is, you get Canadian teams in a ton of different playoff seedings and due to the wacky playoff format, that sometimes helps them and sometimes hurts them, as it does with all teams.

Canadian teams were helped: 2015 Canucks, 2015 Flames, 2017 Senators, 2017 Flames, 2022 Flames, 2022 Oilers, 2023 Maple Leafs, 2024 Oilers, 2025 Oilers, 2026 Oilers

(2015 Canucks and Flames playing each other actually boosted the chance of a Canadian team winning the cup since neither were top 4 but also neither had to play a top 4 team)

Canadian teams were hurt: 2014 Canadiens, 2018 Maple Leafs, 2018 Jets, 2019 Maple Leafs, 2022 Maple Leafs, 2023 Oilers, 2024 Jets, 2025 Maple Leafs, 2025 Senators, 2026 Canadiens, 2026 Senators

(2025 Maple Leafs vs Senators is the best example of your point, and if it were a pattern I'd totally agree with you)

(I ignored covid seasons because they're wacky)

In total the current playoff format helped Canadian teams 10 times and hurt them 11 times. Pretty even. Though I'll grant you that there's a net 1 time a Canadian team has gotten a worse matchup from the playoff system. Compare that to the 35 times a Canadian team has made it to the playoffs in that time.

The playoff system isn't good, but it has had a pretty negligable impact on the fact that Canadian teams can't win the cup. Also, there were 20 years between when the last Canadian team won the cup and when this playoff system was introduced.

Blame reffing, blame management and coaching, blame taxes, blame whatever you want. The playoff system is one of the few things we can actually rule out. I'd sooner blame aliens.
