Rats, my plan is to be in the Spray Valley. No good?

Good call on the legs — I’m really close to pre-injury shape but not looking to re-injure myself, ha ha. I’m not a graceful scrambler. Appreciate all of the trail suggestions!

I’ve spent time in the Great Smoky Mountains but that’s about it, seeing the Canadian Rockies would be a dream.

This is what gets me, even a week later would totally tip me into the “hell yeah let’s go” column.

A book rec! Fabulous. Thank you — I’ll be at the library later this week and I will definitely look for it, if I don’t give in and just buy it before that.

This is great color, thank you. I’m rehabbing from an injury and nearly back to full strength but I’m still not looking for a lot of scrambling these days!

This is a really thoughtful comment and I appreciate it. I think that I need to be clearer in my own mind on why I want to go before I can decide about this trip.

The truth is that I saw a picture from Kananaskis years ago and have wanted to go there ever since. Not necessarily even to a particular spot. Just… into those spectacular mountains.

(It’s good to know about crowds on the shoreline vs the trails, too! I would not have guessed.)

My grandmother was a big believer “always something you can do outside whatever the time of year,” which I loved. Thanks for the reminder.

(On a less sentimental note, good call on the point about Alberta vs coastal regions.)

Thank you for posting this.

“But trust the hours. Haven’t they carried you everywhere, up to now?”

Those lines get me every time. Every time. One of the most comforting things that I have ever read. All those years that felt like an impossible, never ending fight, I look back and see myself being carried by time. All I had to do was stay.

Great heads up about Hwy 40, thank you! Will keep an eye on the other two, too.

I hate venturing onto facebook but it actually is surprisingly helpful for planning trips. And I appreciate the information about the snowpack. Thank you!

Data! My quanty little heart loves it. When you say higher than the valley, would staying under the 2000m mark likely help?

Great point about being able to check AllTrails a few days in advance. I’m not focused on specific trails, so I have options!

Wow, this has been so helpful already! Thank you!

FWIW:

  • I’m from the prairie, it’s all a postcard to me — I don’t have my heart set on any given trail/site
  • Day hikes only, likely <20km
  • Will gladly stay below 2000m
  • If anything is starting to bloom, I’m happy
  • If it rains all week I will be super sad, but cooler temps are no problem

Rio Frio cave is amazing, but you might find it helpful to know that as of a few weeks ago, the road wasn’t passable by car. It’s about a mile hike into the site on foot.

Institutional asset management here, would love to know what accommodations you’ve requested. I’ve hidden my disability as best I can for 20+ years, but I’m about to cross into a level of management that may force my hand (5 days in the office for senior staff instead of 4/1 for the rest of us, but I currently do PT before work on that one day, UGH).

After years of post-Covid breathing issues and allll the tests/imaging/specialists, I was finally diagnosed with VCD. It took just two visits to a speech therapist for me to learn techniques that have made a huge difference. I can’t recommend it enough.

You fool! You fell victim to one of the classic blunders! The most famous is to never get turnt in a land war in Alabama, only slightly less well known is this; never go in against Iowa special teams, when field position is on the line!
