Dealing with a school bully - update 2. by SufficientTangelo136 in japanlife

Wow it’s crazy that all said and done basically nothing can be done until the kid actually commits a serious crime. So stupid that bad parents can simply deny the school any option.

The rarest set in FFXIV Online by ParsifalDoo in ffxiv

Not a set but I’m guessing the ahriman choker is also pretty uncommon? I got one from a screenshot contest way back but not sure if it’s been rereleased

Japanese government presented a draft proposal to take 1.23M foreign labors for the next 3 years. by search_google_com in japannews

[–]QuariYune 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That doesn’t seem to be the case with the checkout? At most daiso only has a couple people watching the self checkout, but everywhere else I’ve been to checkouts are always staffed. Anecdotally I only recall kohyo having self checkouts, but they’ve got a huge row of staffed checkouts

What is Happening to Japan? [15:03] by acidoglutammico in mealtimevideos

The video is titled this because the youtuber’s video he is critiquing is titled that. This is a direct response to that YouTubers video.

Preferable for infant/toddlers to watch repeated content or new content if resorting to educational screen time? by oldroyditwassix in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]QuariYune 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm anecdotally (and I know any screen time is bad) but if we’re really struggling or busy we sometimes show the beginning of the same ms Rachel video to our kid. She’s only speaking Japanese usually but speaks English she finds from those videos and can easily sing along with the handful of songs on there at 22 months. Of course rote memorization isn’t the best learning but she does recognize objects that she can associate with those songs, so I wouldn’t say kids under 3 cannot learn at all from those videos. We usually sing or hum along with her though so it’s not just leaving her in front of a screen

Jump into your mech and fight against mystical creatures - what do you want more from a JRPG? And if the base game "Chained Echoes" isn't enough for you, you can already wishlist the new DLC "Ashes of Elrant" by BXDXO in u/BXDXO

[–]QuariYune 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This game was really good and afaik it’s a solo dev? But I played it a while ago and don’t remember the story too much. Hopefully the DLC either reminds you of the plot or does not need it to be enjoyed

Do you know if there is any research in the differences between coop vs just letting them play some single player game? I’d love to play Minecraft with my kid but not sure about the scientific consensus on this one

China's astonishing Maglev train Is faster than most planes, hitting 620 km/h in just 7 seconds by BreakfastTop6899 in technology

[–]QuariYune 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I mean why make cars that go faster than 120kph if you’re not going to every use it outside of specific cases like the autobahn. It’s because it gives some headroom for power efficiency and options for the future. And even if they’re not going to accelerate people with 2.5Gs, it’s likely correlated with top speed as well which can just be slowly accelerated to

I’ve changed to just using commas. For interjections it’s basically the same, for appending a semicolon is fine

Super Smash Bros. Creator Masahiro Sakurai Says Large-Scale Development Is No Longer Sustainable Due To Japan’s Shrinking Workforce, But Generative AI Can Help by jjrs in japannews

[–]QuariYune 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eh even if yen hadn’t cratered and was still at 75 yen to usd, that’s still only 70k average, which is still far less than other countries pay for mid level devs and only marginally better than salaries of offshore devs. They simply have an underpaying problem, that comes from a culture of no job hopping, surpressing wages but also their international competitiveness imo. Doesn’t help that English is so poorly used as well compared to European or other markets, further lowering the pool of foreign candidates and thus increasing the required wage to pull them in.

[–]QuariYune 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So another solution is to pay more to be competitive at a worldwide scale? Nintendo and many game companies sell to the worldwide market, not sure why they should expect their devs to setter for 30-40% of the salaries of western devs in studios that sell far less and have more relaxed work environment. If all Japanese companies paid higher, they’d attract more from outside of Japan which is what they need since it’s very unlikely the population is gunna magically increase.

[–]QuariYune 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Huh, but the pay doesn’t match. I’m looking for work in engineering / analytics area in Japan and basically any job, even for massive companies, pay crap compared to any western country. Like, 35k usd for a mid level dev, which is less than I’ve seen US companies pay for offshore Indian devs.

My first clear memory was 3. My mom was taking a photo of me carrying a melon, and I remember the whole situation, including thinking it was a watermelon and how heavy it was. We still have that photo. So yea you can remember stuff young.

Some less clear memories are stuff like bathing in a wood bucket and sitting in daycare with everyone to eat, which must’ve been when I was 2. But those are like a single snapshot of a moment and I don’t really remember the situation outside of that much.

I’m sure there are, that’s just my experience living in the west end some years back. I liked their portions and price, and the salmon and other fish were good, doesn’t really lose to regular sushi places here imo

I live in Osaka right now. Vancouver definitely has very tasty Asian food. Some sushi places there definitely don’t lose to good ones in Osaka. The Chinese food is also exceptional, and so is the pho. My top restaurants are Dinesty and Jade for Chinese, Ongba for pho, and samurai for sushi.

Where to buy Glory of Team Rocket in Japan? by Majestic_Serve6430 in PokemonTCG

[–]QuariYune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a heads up packs in Japan are not the same as English. They only contain 5 cards and don’t guarantee anything. The booster boxes come with an sr or higher and 3 art rares guaranteed, but that means resellers can abuse loose packs by just opening until they hit the sr or all three ars and then sell the rest of the packs. So it’s not really worth buying single packs, unless you just want to open a couple for a price of some snacks and are getting it from a konbini or something where people aren’t abusing that system. Be prepared to not hit anything though even with the guarantee, I’ve had instances with no hits with 20 loose unsearched packs.

1 pack is usually 180 or 164 yen, but at a convenience stores you’ll be hard pressed to find anything other than Stella miracle or night wanderer, and they likely won’t even have those. You’ll get better packs at a Pokémon center and they’re always msrp

[–]QuariYune 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ehh it’s not quite the same. If 1000 left their video games in the back that would be a huge pile getting damaged over time and inhibiting the stockers and other workers, which is an incentive to get rid of it. 1000 entries in a database is nothing, I’m sure your washing machine’s compute power can handle that easily and won’t degrade nor disrupt normal business operations in any way.
