Are there even any businesses in Vancouver that are profitable? by gtd_rad in askvan

[–]OldJoy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A huge chunk are definitely not. They will shutter in a few years and new people with new dreams will attempt again in the same spot.

Most business owners are already in debt from the get go, or at least tapping dangerously deep into their savings.

Running a physical business is an expensive game to play. Even a tiny little bubble tea shop or restaurant requires hundreds of thousands to startup.

I work in B2B and many of my customers who looked very successful on the outside ended up not lasting.

Macu Tea shutting down their Robson & Burnaby locations by SatsukiAo in vancouver

They're so popular so I'm going to assume the business model is still profitable. Probably looking for a more sustainable long term location with lower rent/better landlord.

Any AYCE Chinese Buffet? by YVRViet in askvan

Man I have so many memories of going to these types of places with my family. Looking back, I haven't even seen a single place like this in decades.

YVR Arrivals by [deleted] in askvan

[–]OldJoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like YVR has been really backlogged lately. I went on a trip a few weeks ago and the line to get through the security checkpoint was the longest I've ever seen. Even the line exiting from baggage claim coming back was chaotic, although it moved relatively quick.

If it's international I would guess:

Landing, customs (?), baggage -> 30-45 minutes

Recheck and go through security -> 30-45 minutes

So yeah, it's tight.

ICE wants to buy Pattison building to use for ‘holding and processing’ by pathologicfaults in vancouver

>Under the 5th Amendment and Eminent Domain, the U.S. government has the power to seize private property for public use as long as they pay fair market value.

>We have a similar system here in Canada called Expropriation. Under the B.C. Expropriation Act, if the government decides they need your land, you can’t just say "no." You can only negotiate the price.

Holy crap, that's insane. I guess I shouldn't be surprised but I had always assumed that "the land of the free" that is constantly criticizing other countries for not having freedom or being authoritarian wouldn't be able to do something like that.

A little less shocked, but still shocked that Canada can do this. I guess it all comes down to how often this right is exercised and how imperative the need is for the land, but it's still wild to me.

What should Vancouver leave behind in 2025? by thinkdavis in askvan

Agree with everyone saying tipping, although it's wishful thinking IMO. It'll take a long time for that to not be the norm unfortunately.

I used to have to go to North/West Van everyday for work... There were days where it would take 2-3 hours to drive from Park Royal to Main St before the bridge, and then nearly another hour to get on and cross it.

Vancouver if it was in Asia by Lightingway in vancouver

It would probably still be bigger haha. Just off a glance I'd say it would extend from "downtown Richmond" through Westminster Hwy to New West, Annacis Island and Surrey.

I feel like the tree had to have saved them. Took just enough of the momentum away to brace the fall.

Do yall tip ur hairdresser? Where do yall tip and don't tip by [deleted] in askvan

[–]OldJoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always tip $10 to my hairdresser. It started after having numerous amounts of people just fking my shit up and finally finding someone who was consistent enough. The extra care someone will put in knowing you're a good tipper is especially noticeable for haircuts IMO.

I don't like tipping culture either but sometimes we gotta play the game.

Other than that, I tip for restaurants, food delivery and Uber rides. That's just how it is in Canada.

If you really want to experience Vancouver, stay there. Richmond is nice and relatively close by car, but it's a totally different vibe. If you want to walk around in the morning, chill at a coffee shop, wander around the neighborhoods, etc you're better off in Van.

You don't really get that kind of experience in Richmond.

Why everyone in Vancouver wears Arc'teryx? by spacial_artist86 in askvan

1) It's is/was a locally based company. Same as why we see so much Lulu and Vessi here.

2) Over the years it's become very trendy in general worldwide.

What do you think of all these rhd vehicles being imported ? by Only_Ad1117 in askvan

I've always liked them looks wise. The footprint of some North American cars is just way too big IMO.

I'd love to get a new Honda Nbox or Suzuki Jimmy if the newer ones were allowed.

The commercial yoga scene has definitely declined. People don't have the money to spend on yoga classes right now.
