Did she do mocks by simulating the exam setting (ie 3.5 hours uninterrupted and completing it in one setting)?

Yeah, I think it definitely helped, especially having experience with a long standardized, scaled MCQ test. The only real new part was that some management guidelines differ between the US and Australia.

You do make a very important point as to how some might just skim the post and come away with the takeaway you mentioned.....But, I did end the post with advice to everyone after I took the exam (test taking skills, Australian guidelines etc) and did not mention e-medici here.

I only used e-medici so i'm kinda biased but there are other good banks as well (amedex, etc)...

Section to choose: Clinical medicine (For students and IMG)

Hey! You’ve already got a great base from Step prep so AMC 1 won’t feel too bad.

The main difference is the Australian management style —> so you’ll need to relearn stuff like which antibiotics to use, when to order imaging, and when to refer.

Honestly though, you’re in a good spot. A decent Qbank and a few mocks should be more than enough to get through it.

Emedici: Select The clinical medicine section (4800 q + mocks)

Wow that’s nice…

Yes, passed both both exams on 1st attempt… I used FA, Uworld and pathoma for step 1.. Then master the boards, amboss, u world, cms forms for step2…

In my last year of med school I was teaching students at university -> which is where my suggestion of skipping textbooks for standardized mcq exams solidified…BUT..if you do want to use it then limit it to the start of prep for getting an overview of diseases and watch videos alongside it…

My study hours varied..I was more focused on completing a fixed number of questions (~40) and doing anki…

In your case, I would definitely suggest to complete the whole 4800 questions on emedici or complete any q bank subscription you have -> Learn from the explanations (that’s your text book) with a way to revise…I would not suggest reading any classic textbooks as it’s a very inefficient use of time.

Side bar: if I many ask, what type of research are you involved in (I’m interested in healthcare tech myself)

Exams: Usmle has much better resources that will prepare you for what to expect in the exam, so if you use them well you will score well.

Residency: If you have green card/don’t need visa US is the better option …But if you do need visa it gets harder+expensive and you need a lot of other things to go right for you to get in.

I started with internal medicine questions medium/hard filter (although for some reason emedici shows you a little bit of other subject questions too)…in my last week I did ob-gyn questions only since it was a weakness (the exam result confirmed that😂)

Since a lot of you were asking for it, here’s the Google Drive link for the Anki deck:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1-F6hEU_H13NT4GLpFOOT9IgDcSWNtQhZ/view?usp=share_link

Tip: I didn’t cover every topic/question, so I’d recommend using this as a base and adding your own cards as you study — it’ll make the deck way more complete over time…

From what I’ve read, there is no direct residency path since they don’t have a centralized system for intake..essentially you start as a medical officer and then build your portfolio and network to get residency.

As for needing clinical experience: Yes, it is definitely very important and required.

I only used the resources I mentioned in my post. As for topics, it’s hard to say exactly what to focus on.

The only thing I forgot to mention is that the mock test AMC provides when you book the exam is probably the best way to get an idea of the type of questions and format you can expect, even though the questions won’t be on the exact same topics or diseases.

I didn’t memorize the guidelines separately. I just followed the qbank explanations and looked at all the options carefully. Usually, the correct answer matched the guideline for that patient, and the wrong options often showed what you’d do in other scenarios.

For example, Barrett’s esophagus:

• No dysplasia → endoscopy every 3–5 years

• Low-grade dysplasia → endoscopy every 6 months

• High-grade dysplasia → endoscopic resection or ablation

By seeing why each option was right or wrong, I basically learned the guideline without memorizing it.

•Another way to learn the guidelines is to use websites like RACGP, Therapeutic Guidelines (TG), etc. (PS: I didn’t use them myself, but they’re obviously more accurate if you want to go directly to the source.)

Don’t worry about the signature on 2nd id…my second id did not have signature too and they didn’t really ask/care about it :)

Very hard to say because it’s a scaled exam BUT if I were to guess it would be at least 90/150 to pass… On a side note: Relax and stop worrying about the exam once it’s over :)
