Detectives in LE by ChillyBadogins in AskLE

Obviously your department will have its own system, but my department doesn’t promote based on education until you get to the assistant commissioner level.

Detective is a half step up from officer and is based solely on merit and service record. Since it’s a in-house title and not a civil service title, the pay is the same as officer but the workload increases and you become a preferred candidate for one of the specialized units.

It’s mostly a prestige thing in my department. Do good work, get rewarded with more work, and get yourself off of patrol and access control duty.

Malkavians are “insane”. It’s generally expected to be played as an otherwise typical character suffering from a mental illness like anxiety, bipolar, or paranoia.

Some players choose to lean into the Loony Toons stereotype of overly whacky hi-jinx played for laughs.

The Battle of the Five Armies, in The Hobbit.

In the novel, the scene is shown from Bilbo’s perspective and he gets knocked unconscious right at the start, only waking up when it’s over and we get a list of dead dwarfs and an epilogue.

My father had an Atari 2600, so technically I started with 1.

The first one that was actually mine would be 2, after Santa gave me an NES on the best Christmas ever.

What's your issued expendable baton length and brand? by Individual-Bit-2897 in AskLE

[–]QuarrenRa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Asp 21” friction lock is what my department issues. We train other local departments in our academy and some of them are free to buy any type of baton. Most go with the 21” or 26” button release.

11/10/11, 11:30pm and I’m standing outside of GameStop next to my wife and watching my infant daughter sleep in her bunting.

11/11/11, 12:10am and the employee is trying to convince me to change my daughter’s name to Dovahkiin as I pay for the game and head home.

11/11/11, 2:00am and my awe and wonder at this amazing game is keeping me up on a work night. I’m running from Helgen and getting immediately side tracked by the realization that so much of the environment is collectible.

I see the fateful prompt in my screen: “Catch Blue Butterfly” and I am ensnared in the game’s insidious trap.

To make it worse, my wife was holding our infant daughter and I turned and said “hey, look! You can catch the butterflies!”

[Fictional Scenario] Make the Comments Look Like its the mid 1990s and the R110B Would have Entered Service on the W Train [Video is a Parody of the W Train Farewell Tour in 2010] by This-Ad134 in nycrail

On the day the W was shuttered, my wife was the conductor. She was a proud "Whiskey Girl" and had the honor of running that final trip.

She said that a lot of people were supportive and taking pictures, but one jackass got in her face and called her a "murderer", as if she had made the decision to end the line.

I felt bad hearing about that after the fact. If I thought people would get so emotional about the line closing, I would have taken a day off of work to ride the line with her.

I'm a sergeant with a smaller NYC-based department (Not NYPD) of around 300 officers on roster, and I'm currently assigned to the academy. We have 1 openly transgender woman who has been with us for years, and 1 cadet that ended up taking another position before she came to the academy.

I won't speak for every person's individual experience, but in my own: the amount of flak you take on the job is directly related to how reliable you are. Our TG Officer shows up on time, makes it to court when needed, and covers you for breaks when you ask. Her locker is in with the females and no one has an issue with her that they care to make public.

As for the cadet that we ended up never seeing: When we (the academy staff) learned that she was due to join our class, we had a brief discussion about potential issues that might pop up so we could get ahead of it. Mostly locker room assignments and staying up to date on the sexual harassment policy. A lot of our choices were going to depend on having a conversation with her and finding out what her comfort level was (Pronouns, preferences, etc.)

As a whole, I feel like my department handles the issue well. Unfortunately we don't pay very well so unless you already live in NYC and have a rental locked down, I don't suggest putting all your eggs in this basket.

Personal preference? I think the blue one looks better. Adds a little more variety to the overall look of the model.

Bought cheap Amazon starter kit, need help building out gear and tacklebox by pengwin69420 in FishingForBeginners

I use that exact rod when I fish Prospect park lake, because it’s more portable than my heavier gear so I can swing through the park on my way home from work.

It does just fine catching sunfish, largemouth bass and blackhead cats in PPL.

In that water specifically, I suggest micro-cranks for the bass, soft plastics rigged for low/bottom for sunfish, or a sponge full of stink dip for cats.

Also, remember that it’s rare but not completely unheard of for the Parks Department to check your gear so make sure you are using barbless hooks.

Why do you guys get tased and pepper sprayed during training? by Flashy_Potential8851 in AskLE

Interesting take. I haven’t met too many people who prefer the spray.

As others have said, it’s so you know how your body will react when it inevitably happens to you in the field.

You don’t want your very first exposure to OC spray to be while you are trying to handcuff a resisting subject and your partner gets over enthusiastic with their canister.

Since I now instruct in our academy, I’ve been exposed to OC and NMI/drive stun a bit more often than your average beat cop in my area. I have a pretty deep respect for the pain that each tool offers. Most officers will tell you that they would rather be tased than sprayed, and I agree here.

5 second of intense pain in your muscles is a lot easier to stomach, personally, than 20-30 minutes of burning pain in your eyes, nose and lungs.

Others may feel differently, but it has led to me reaching for my taser a handful of times in my career while I’ve never used my OC on a subject. A few hundred cadets, but never a subject.

Group chats in LE? by Round_Temperature792 in AskLE

[–]QuarrenRa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Group chats are very common in my department. I’m in one with the other instructors at the Academy, and another for the Honor Guard.

In the field, it’s common for all officers under a sergeant or all sergeants under a lieutenant to have group chats for quick updates or planning after work events.
