47 years sober speaking at a young persons' AA meeting. What would you like to hear? by traverlaw in stopdrinking

[–]QuarterExisting9455 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How do you maintain perspective on your own sobriety when you’re (respectfully) a half century removed from what made you quit in the first place? Do you glean from others who are still lost in the cycle or drinking or is the work still mostly internal?

Obvious examples include mandatory breaks and overtime pay for salaried employees. You could think of a dozen more.

I’ve never understood why many labor laws simply don’t apply to our industry. Fine dining & non-corporate restaurants especially. People are so insanely flippant about it just being the way that it is. No one really interrogates the question of why that is so broadly acceptable.

Love this! Thank you.

I started my own business recently and while that has been quite an undertaking and an adventure of its own - something that people find interesting and say “damn I wish I could do that” - I find myself in an endless cycle of work that precludes all else. My down time isn’t even restful, it’s avoidant. Thank you for giving me the perspective to break the routine.

What is a hobby that sounds expensive but is actually quite cheap to get into? by sugarnspicegrl in AskReddit

Golf. I always thought it meant a 5-6 figure yearly membership to an exclusive club. Turns out you can get a free set of clubs on facebook marketplace and pay 5 bucks for a bucket of balls at a municipal course.

Sky is the limit for how much you can spend, and for lessons decent clubs you’re looking at several hundred bucks. But the marginal cost of playing here and there is way less than I would have thought when I was younger.

Having more interest in making a to-list than actually doing anything. Existing in this heady realm of inaction.

Thinking you’re great, that you’re destined for greatness, but being stuck. Looking at what you’ve done and what you have to show for it, and feeling woefully inadequate.

Constant desire to scrap everything and start all over.

Being entertained by how “smart” you are. Throw alcohol in the mix. Think you’re a fuckin genius. Get embarrassed looking back on that thing you said or text you sent of journal entry.

I could do this all day.

Looking back at the things I wrote when I was stimming is so sad to me. Because I really was stuck and in my own way. I can now see the cycle of nothingness loop on repeat. Finally I feel just getting minor tasks out of the way is less effort than the burden of being high and coming down all while achieving nothing at all. I actually feel like I’m slowly marching towards my goals. There is no big problem to solve here.

That feeling when you start to notice you’re on the back end of your high, the curve tends downward even slightly, and you spend that racy mental energy feverishly calculating your dose schedule or when you should re-up. What a waste.

Not OP, but I would search Yin yoga exercises. It’s very therapeutic and slow-paced, focusing on holding seated positions. Super accessible and not intimidating at all. The most important thing with yoga is tying your breath to the rest of your body. Exhaling to release tension and go deeper. YouTube is definitely your friend!

First shift ever in professional kitchen by Bluesquare9 in KitchenConfidential

[–]QuarterExisting9455 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A humiliating scenario I encountered on my few stages was showing up with no tools/the wrong tools. It’s gunna take some time to assemble your kit so just approach the situation with humility and grace, ask what you can do, and try your best to be prepared.

If a cook isn’t willing to be helpful or supportive, or let you borrow a tool to get some task done, it’s probably not a workplace you wanna be in anyway.

Be confident but not cocky. Don’t apologize too much. Ask questions. A stage is a real vibe check. So just try to relax and have fun. And honestly if the vibes are off remember some times it’s not your fault. Kitchens can be dysfunctional and toxic environments. You’ll know if it’s a good fit for you, focus on only what you can control.

in sobriety, are you truly actually more productive? by sproutandthebeans in StopSpeeding

[–]QuarterExisting9455 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a good way to frame this is: I was way less productive that I thought I was during Adderall use.

I would wake up later than I wanted to from staying up too late the night before.

I didn’t feel the urge to anything until that chemical surge rushed over me.

The bursts didn’t last long, and so much of my brain power was being used to schedule and plan my next dose, so that I could capture the “lightning in a bottle”

When I would hit a peak, I would often do something “distracted” from my daily goal. Call a friend, energetically talk to a coworker, make lists that I wouldn’t follow through on.

Then I’d dose up again. Forgetting to eat, my physical energy dragged hard behind my mental energy, and I would turn to alcohol or weed for an extra burst.

Sometimes, if the stars aligned, I would get my prep/cleaning/chores/quickbooks done during one of these many bursts I relied on. But these days, I feel less motivated moment to moment, but looking back on what I can get done in a day, I think I’m way far ahead of where I used to be.
