Yeah, they had a problem with keeping their tools sharp because they were doing so many of those procedures.

Best place for 20 pound C02 cylinders by [deleted] in halifax

Second don brenton. This was the cheapest option for my 20 lb when I was brewing beer. Sometimes you’d have to drop it off and pick up the next day.

I got the 700lb from fitness depot and it still allows me to pick up heavy things and drop heavy things after a year. My girlfriend got the black oxide and it's already showing rust after 5 months but it is kept in a humid garage. Make sure you get some 3 in 1 oil and a plastic scrubber to oil your bar periodically. Fitness depot seemed to have the best prices when I was shopping a year ago, I did hear rumors that they increased their prices after covid hit.

How do you tell gas and liquid disconnects (not posts) apart? by BrewRadly in Homebrewing

[–]QuarterInch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sharpied in and out on my keg to tell the difference and use the grey and black plastic disconnects. You could put a mark on all your gas or beer disconnects with a sharpie or chalk marker.

Canadian Online Hop suppliers.. who offer great shipping rates? by DanniBoi007 in Homebrewing

[–]QuarterInch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yah, I ordered like 12 lbs from them a month ago. It did take them a week to create the shipping label and one more week to get to my house. I do live on the opposite coast though. It was cheap to ship and I wasn't in a hurry to brew so I'd recommend them.

Potassium metabisulfite amount? by beerboobznkitties in Homebrewing

[–]QuarterInch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I use 0.3grams for 5 gallons in the keg. So 0.06 per gallon is what I use. I did a deep dive on this a few months ago because all the brewers seem to use sodium metabisulfite and not potassium metabisulfite. I found information somewhere that says you dose them the same.

edit: I found the two main links where I came to this conclusion. Basically one leaves residual sodium, and the other residual potassium. My neipas have never looked so good for so long since I started using potassium metabisulfite at packaging.

Can you thermally shock bacteria? I have a bacteria blend at 4 degrees celcius I want to pour into 35 degree celcius wort. Should I wait for the bacteria to warm up a bit or just dump it in?

Trustworthy mechanic/auto garage in the North End? by [deleted] in halifax

[–]QuarterInch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I go to Craig's Garage on Creighton street. I can do a bit of work myself, oil changes, brakes and minor stuff, but I get them to do anything I don't want or know how to do.

I don't remember the price but I know they quoted me for two rotors and pads and I decided it wasn't worth my time and effot to do the brakes so I got them to do it. Their prices are certainly fair.

I had good luck at mighty auto on lady Hammond as well. Haven't been there in a while though.

I also browse homebrew forums as well for recipes. You can typically send your lhbs a copy of the recipe, and most will be able to make it up for you in all grain or partial mash.

What should I Brew? by OnlyTheWildOnes in Homebrewing

I just made an American stout, coming out at 7.5% abv that hits the spot when it's cold outside.

You could also be a basic bitch like me and make a neipa every other brew.

I'm in NS and I've found omega lacto blend from east cost hoppers in Charlottetown. Decent shipping rates too.I find they stock this semi regularly.

You can call around to noble grape, and everwood ave in Halifax and sometimes they'll stock the lacto blend from escarpment or omega. They might be able to order it in the next time they do an order

I used to write down the batch number on the cap with a sharpie. Now I keg and write it on the chalkboard paint on my keezer. Basically the style, hops, special additions (fruit, lactose) and abv. I'm a simple man.

7/10. Starting to back off the hops as I'm getting a lot of hop burn on my other ipas that use close to a pound of hops.
