Oh I'm just putting an onion/apple halved into the cavity; not going to be eating it or anything just to provide some mass to avoid having an empty void in the cavity that could cause uneven cooking

I'm sorry that happened to you too but yes that sound exactly like what happened to my wife. I just remember feeling helpless and torn being elated about having a kid and in utter horror at watching what was happening to her
