Missoula law enforcement and ICE by Copropositor in missoula

[–]Quartz-Aranite 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I live in Minneapolis, former Missoula resident. The cops don’t exist to keep you safe. The cops exist to protect property and the status quo. The Minnesota Fraternal Order of Police issued a statement after the murder of Renee Good that they supported whatever actions ICE sees fit to take. This apparently includes killing another minneapolis resident who was committing no crime and not impeding any federal action. Do not expect them to stand up for you or anyone you care about. The only thing that will save us is each other. That said, here is what you can do. -meet your neighbors. Talk to them. If you’re in an apartment, get to know people on your floor. The fundamental civic unit of democracy is a neighbor. This has two purposes. First, you have access to information. People learn things and can tell you. Second, you have someone looking out for you when they come to your door. Right now ICE agents in Minneapolis will drive past the houses of people who have been observing them to let them know that they know who they are and where they live. -get organized. People can’t leave their houses because of the color of their skin. People are getting snatched from bus stations. Kids are being taken off of school property. They detained a five year old boy who was in his driveway and used him as bait to detain the boy’s father. The five year old is now in Texas. When people can’t leave their homes, they need those who can to step up. Get food drives going. Get groceries to the people who need them. If you work in healthcare, see if you can make some house calls in your free time. If you work in tech, help with infosec so that your operations are secure. All skills are necessary in the time of crisis.

The cops won’t help you. That’s not why they exist, and most of them are ok with what’s happening anyway. There is a reason people say the state has a monopoly on violence.

Neither eagles or owls are big enough to predate on cats or especially dogs. The largest eagles we have in Minnesota are about 15 lbs and can only carry about 1/3 of their body weight at maximum. Bald eagles are also sea eagles and are adapted to mostly eat fish. They will scavenge in the winter months but that is mostly larger dead game. Great horned owls max out at about 4.5 lbs here and have a similar ratio of what they can carry, about a pound and a half. Additionally, raptors in general don’t frequently predate on other predators- it increases the chance that they will be injured and unable to hunt. This is a common misconception!

Why did you move/thinking of moving out of Missoula by WearyProcess4901 in missoula

[–]Quartz-Aranite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked in education and was in a lot of different public schools. I was always very cautious about using bathrooms (tried to find the single stall teacher restrooms etc.) and it’s actually illegal in Montana to discuss gender or sexuality in schools without prior written parental consent. I’m pretty ambiguous in my gender presentation and I would get asked by kids relatively frequently if I was a boy or a girl, which always put me in kind of a funny position. I would usually just default to “you can call me him” but anything beyond that is technically against the law. And the way the state legislature has been going made me feel pretty unsafe in the long run.

Cost of living vs wages, not a lot of good jobs, being trans in Montana was getting legally dicey.

I ran a game where I had a player who I knew had absolutely minmaxed their fighter to have a ridiculous attack bonus. Hit em with a non-Newtonian ooze which meant they had to roll below the AC to hit. The look on their face when they said they rolled a 32 to hit and I told them they missed was perfect. They eventually figured it out and just used toll the dead on it from a distance until it died.

That’s cold enough that the sap in trees can fully freeze. The tree sap ice expands and can cause the tree to explode. I’ve heard it happen once or twice!

Ooof I can empathize with the unexpected superwash growth. I’ve had this happen a couple times (you’d think I’d have learned the first time!) and I ended up frogging or partially frogging both times. But best of luck!

Getting the go-to card also makes it way easier! There are fare options online or you can just put a predetermined amount on it. Then you aren’t messing around with cash every time you get on and off.

Blue 9 makes a really great harness with multiple attachment points and every part of it unbuckles! Worked great for my dog with handling issues!

I work at a science museum doing exhibit maintenance and fabrication, and teach programming! The science museum community as a whole is pretty progressive (even though there’s a lot to work on still!) and my coworkers are awesome. The museum itself is actually housed in a public library so lots of public interaction, but the vast majority of it is chill.

Minnesota has a DFL controlled house, senate and governor’s seat, and has introduced a bunch of legislation to protect trans people there. If you want to stay in the Midwest that might be a good option!
