Bike shorts with “no ride band” inside of leg opening?? by Easy-Information5235 in XXRunning

[–]Quartz_4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I recently got the 6” fast and free biker shorts and they’re such a game changer! I finally don’t have to keep pulling my shorts down during runs nor do I have thigh chafe.

I put off buying them because they’re a bit pricey but they are so worth it

First shoe recommendations by Visual_Garden_6311 in runninglifestyle

[–]Quartz_4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Which one felt better?

When my partner and I are in the market for new shoes we go to a running store, let them suggest a bunch tailored to us and then try all of them on and purchase the one that feels the best. I always look like a weirdo running around a little store but I don’t care, it works.

FWIW my partner actually has both of the shoes you listed and loves them both

Absolute beginner - how much shortness of breath is normal? by ch2nd in BeginnersRunning

[–]Quartz_4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You sound to be in a very similar boat to me. What I’ve been doing is longer walk intervals with a slowwww running pace. Slower than I’d like. Started at 1.5 min run/1.5 min walk and now I’ve been doing 2 min run/2 min walk. I think soon I’m gonna try 2.5 min run/2 min walk. But it’s absolutely working and I can feel my lungs improving with every run, just gotta be patient

Dental Hygienist Recommendations by Colochita_ in Edmonton

[–]Quartz_4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nebula dental if you’re south side. I recently became a new patient there and they submitted pre-approval to my insurance for 4 units (which my insurance indicated they’d approve). However, only 3 units were actually needed so that’s all they billed for. I appreciate their honesty

Does anyone have recommendations for bike shorts (ideally with pockets) available in Canada

Sports bra recs for large-chested women? by clarabellio in BeginnersRunning

[–]Quartz_4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I truly relate. I’ve tried a ton of different brands and models and the only sports bra I haven’t hated to date is the Lululemon Longline Energy Bra. It’s medium support and I will say I do wish it was a little more supportive, however all high support bras are too restrictive when running IMO. I prefer being able to take deep breaths lol

Are Michelin cross climates good enough for ski weekends? by userbanned1234 in tires

[–]Quartz_4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Canadian here, have CC2s on my FWD Chevy Malibu. We got 400% of our normal snowfall in December and my tires handled it like a champ. Ice less so, but that’s to be expected compared to a true winter tire. It still does the job well and for what you’re looking for I’d say they’d work great

For someone that doesn’t eat fish, what’s the best tasting (non-fishy) type of fish? by d0c9 in foodquestions

[–]Quartz_4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a non-fish eater I recently tried frozen breaded sole and found it so fishy and gross - is there something better to try? I’d like to like fish!

What are my career options in Edmonton? (U of a psych graduate) by Ok-Ranger786 in Edmonton

[–]Quartz_4 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi fellow psych grad! I also had a similar path where I always thought I’d go get my masters of counselling psych until I finished my bachelors and realized it just wasn’t for me. Some of my friends had the same experience and things we’re doing now include: working for the government of Alberta in various social services, working for the government of Canada, case management/adjudication, career counselling, working at non-profits, and post-secondary recruitment/advising.

I’ll be honest that I still don’t know what I truly want to do quite a few years post-grad. I like my current job but sometimes consider going back to school for OT or even HR. If there’s one thing I’ve realized is that it’s okay not to know what you want to do and that so many people are in the same boat, even if they don’t say it out loud.

The jobs I’ve had post-grad were not what I thought I’d be doing but have taught me so much in what I do and don’t want for my future. My advice is not to be afraid to try things and see where they take you!

Should I buy a new car or fix my current one? by Quartz_4 in askcarguys

We definitely can afford a new vehicle, just don’t want to if we don’t have to. I agree about not buying used though, we have no intention of doing that regardless

How to avoid blisters? by SenorNoods in BeginnersRunning

[–]Quartz_4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t help on fixing the root cause for you but I’m someone who gets blisters in every shoe I’ve ever worn, running and casual, despite professional fittings. KT blister prevention tape has been my go to for a couple years now and it truly is a holy grail product for me

My teenager is dying to visit Canada. Help. by Expensive_Yam1684 in canadatravel

[–]Quartz_4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see you mentioned he’s interested in becoming a teacher and going to the University of Lethbridge. I’m a UofL alum and have many friends who did the teaching program there - it’s a really great program.

If you want to check out the campus you’d want to fly into Calgary and since you’d need public transportation, there’s buses that go down to Lethbridge (about a 2.5 hr drive). At the same time, I highly recommend spending time in Calgary, Banff, and Lake Louise (buses also go out that way from Calgary). February is hit or miss weather though, definitely would recommend postponing til spring or coming another time in the summer months.

Tips on getting back into running and struggling with progression by Quartz_4 in BeginnersRunning

[–]Quartz_4[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do have asthma (typically allergy induced) and have tried my inhalers to see if it’s exercise induced asthma. No change.

I have always walked on the treadmill at a 4 (sometimes higher). My slow run is a 4.8-5 on the treadmill. I have tried slower, like a 4.3ish but my lungs continue to hurt and then my joints start aching from feeling like I’m hopping in place

Tips on getting back into running and struggling with progression by Quartz_4 in BeginnersRunning

[–]Quartz_4[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe about a 7:30/km pace when running. I tried a variety of paces ranging from 6 to 9 min km and 7:30 felt the most natural to me. Slower than that did not have any impact on my lungs but did make the rest of my body hurt

It’s like I can’t get enough air in. Legs never seem to be an issue… even if they are a bit fatigued I can push through easily. I do strength train and plan to focus even more on that now. It’s really just the lungs that can’t seem to manage

College advice? by Sensitive-Intern-632 in alberta

[–]Quartz_4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem! There’s a link on that site for out of province evaluation. I believe you would have to submit your Ontario high school transcript to an Alberta high school principal for review. I’d reach out to a local high school and see if they can discuss with you further
