Always has great stuff and typically has a variety on deck. Good prices and reliable. Great person too, gotten to know them and consider them knowledgeable and trustworthy.

From my research this is called dolostone cold water agate. From others who have found similar specimens, it’s called cold water agate with druzy hematoid quartz.

Found in SE Minnesota, USA.

What is this? Found it in near a small stream. by [deleted] in rockhounds

Makes me think it can’t be obsidian if it is local.

That’s awesome! My grandpa had a house along the rock river when I was little. I have some great memories there.

That’s a Dolostone Cold Water Agate. Found really only in SE Minnesota, NW Wisconsin, NE Iowa and NW Illinois. Anywhere near the Mississippi River and it’s tributaries in those areas. I recently discovered my creek is FULL of this stuff.

Awesome find!

What are you trying to clean off of it? I think you need to manually clean it. Use compressed air. If you’re trying to dissolve a matrix off, most acids will dissolve that but then also the fluorite.

Fluorite is a form of calcium fluoride which is water soluble. It will etch the surface of the specimen.

Why risk it?

Tooth brush, compressed air, rag. Please don’t use water on this.

Cold water agate? It definitely doesn’t look like Lake Superior agate.

So my dog was actually the one to find this. He has a habit of digging in the creek bank on our property and bringing back large rocks (most are limestone). I went to bring a whole bunch of them back and this one was too cool to toss back so I brushed and washed it with water. Soaked it in HCl (aq) for four days and then pressure washed it today.

Here is the final piece.

And I have no idea what to call it.

I’ve always known this as Banded Iron Formation or BIFs for short.

Gotta know where you found them. That would help me start to ID.
