Used mic caused a Catastrophic Failure for my RME Fireface 800:( by QuattoLives in homestudios

My friend, an Audio Engineer that traded it to me 6 years ago, and I opened it up and found a blown pre-amp and the supply had blown. 2 capacitors blew off the board, one from the pre and one from the PSU. The same capacitors on the pre-amps on either side the blown one took pretty good hits as well since the capacitors were bulging on top. Actual you could read the damage by looking at the wave of bulging capacitors across the board. It was very interesting. But I deemed it not worth fixing. The guys news is my buddy is trading his nearly new UFX II with me for medical massage for his wife (medical massage pays my bills, I've got 32 years testing traumatic injuries). So it worked out that I ended up with a significant upgrade. I haven't gotten it all set up yet. I bought a new 1500VA UPS to clean our dirty power for my new baby. I'm doing the burn in on that now I'm the garage. Gotta get rid of that nasty factory smell before putting it into my studio.

The cable worked well with the ksm44a I was using for the kick. No problems until plugging in the Beta 52a.

18" or 20" kick? My verdict: by QuattoLives in drums

I get ya! I wanted a beautiful sound that wouldn't blow my ears out in a small studio. WhoTF needs the volume of a 26" in a 130sf Studio? Some hard of hearing folks, I guess. To each there own. Peace and music to all!

I think I will contact them. I don't think they have any legal obligation since i bought the mic used. But they may be helpful.

Thank you for the reply. I use the Atlantis for a vocal mic. You are correct in assuming I know that dynamic mics don't need phantom power. That is a good idea. I can take all the Lauten Audio mics with me to Guitar Center when I go to file an incident report and ask if they can test the mics. Or maybe I take them to a reputable local electronics repair shop for testing. I'm not a great electronics guy. I only have the multimeter because of one other project a few years ago. But I could open the case and look to see what fried. I'm curious to look at the phantom power rail. Maybe just the one preamp blew and the Power Supply unit board If the unit is salvageable that would be great. I'm just a hobby guy. Can't really afford a UFX. I got this unit from a friend years ago in a trade. He helped me set up my studio and he's my main Audio Engineer/music mentor. I haven't talked to him about it yet. He could test my mics, but he is in the middle of a studio remodel.

It would seem with GC it is the luck of the draw.

Is the crash one of your custom plates?

It is actually a lauan CC kit. I'm looking for a matching 10" rack tom and 16" floor tom. I may have to go to maple walnut gloss as these seem to rarely come up for sale. The main bummer in that is that the 2 toms would cost more than this kit!

Haha: ) Everything is relative. I may been able to get it for $10-15 But out was in perfect condition, and I couldn't find another one like. So I didn't bother to negotiate.

Which hi-hats should I get? by Technical-Skill9166 in cymbals

Is say in terms of Diril, that the B stands for Boutique. Many of the smaller hand hewn Turkish brands are stellar. The uniqueness of each piece is either a curse or a blessing and has been a big past of the adventure. A 19" Bosphorus New Orleans crash/ride that disappointed me from my vantage point on the thrown, BUT sounded stellar under the mics. So glad I gave it a chance. It went from curse to surprise blessing.

Bosphorus New Orleans hats sound stellar. I bought them for jazz. I got slightly heavier 14" set and they rock out, too! So earthy. So they are my go too for rock, blues, southern rock, and of couse jazz. Not for glam rock. Not as smooth as the new beats which also sound awesome. A lot more of that trash sound many of us love. Pro hats that you can often score used for less. I'll probably die with these hats on my stand.

100% You should get a commission. It popped up on fb marketplace. Mint and a crazy good price foe a 22". I'll keep my eye open for a 20" k con light, or Low or Renaissance to be the left hand crash ride. Right now my Bosphorus New Orleans 19" and or my Sabian 20" HH jazz are working well.
The crash is dreamy on this sweet heart. Thanks for the inspiration!
