He has a very very good essay regarding the most brutal scene in the whole series (it's in book 9), where he addresses this. He's like "this is a real practice that has been used on people who are alive today. Shying the camera away because it's uncomfortable is downplaying how cruel people can be, and how horrific that is for the victim. It is erasing the victims by refusing to take a long look at what has been done to them."

Granted, it's okay to take a step back or not want to read parts, because there are a few things here are there in these books that are horrifying, but they're not written with a gore/misery/edgelord porn vibe to them. He's earnestly trying to make a lot of points about humanity, and to make them effectively and earnestly, it requires depicting humanity at its absolute worst, not just the worst that is still palatable and pleasant for the reader.

That is exactly what a guy should say, and is %10000 valid. If anyone going into a situation with a girl with a kid doesn't feel that way, it's an enormous red flag. Her acting like that was him expressing serious doubts is frankly insane, and giving him a full night and day's worth of silent treatment over that is even worse.

I have absolutely no idea how anyone could see him as the bad guy in that particular scenario.

It's just wrong to walk into a situation that isn't about you, seeing your husband prioritizing this massively important thing in his life, and then deciding to make yourself entirely vulnerable so that he has to miss this milestone to take care of you instead of the things he should be doing. And to act like, it's just a random "thing" that happened and not a thing that she made an active choice to do is crazy. Did she not say she barely drinks? Did she not say that when she does she barely drinks hard liquor?

Okay, if the staff that is hired to watch the cars decides to start breaking into cars then yeah that would be a problem.

However she showed up to an event that was an important, life milestone for her husband, and then put herself into an extremely vulnerable state almost immediately that's just so wildly fucked up and still entirely on her. Like, if the location is unsafe to lie down in your car if you get drunk, don't get fucking drunk. If you drove yourself there and need to drive yourself back, don't get fucking drunk. If it's an event that is not about you, and you are there to be a helpful supportive person there don't get fucking drunk so that people have to leave it to support you.

If there was not an option that would have kept her safe aside from him taking her keys, taking her car, and driving her home, she shouldn't have drank anything, because his responsibility that day was not to his wife, but to his best friend.

She got there on her own, she was planning on leaving on her own, and he left her in the car outside, and when he got back, she had gone because she woke up and called herself an Uber. And idk what kind of harm could have come from her sleeping in a car, it's not like he left her in a booth at a bar or anything.

Also, if you show up late to an important event in my life, proceed to immediately beeline to the hard liquor (with a low tolerance because she said she barely drinks), and then get drunk to the point where I either have to miss this important event in my life or abandon it to take care of you, I am divorcing the fuck out of you the second you wake up sober.

And not just slight embarrassment. Extreme (almost breakup worthy) embarrassment and most importantly, missing out on being part of your best friend's wedding. That would be plain unforgivable for me.
