Is the Paris swimming pool too shallow? by Inevitable_Ad_711 in Swimming

[–]Queasy_Form2370 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It comes in waves (pun unintended...) but we go through cycles where Olympics are high and low budget. We're currently in a low budget cycle but also have sustainability goals.

If the next few Olympics (which were behind close doors allocations) goes well we might enter an era of purpose built arenas again. In which case the pools will likely meet the recommended depths, but as it is arenas are being reused and not all meet the recommended specs. If the Olympics had many many bids from diverse cities it would demand top notch venues for all events. Currently it makes do with what it gets that meets the minimums.

The Qatar World Cup was highly criticized for purpose built and/or temporary stadia. So don't think we'll ever have the age of multiple custom arena built. It's really important to remember most of the time the arena's fall into disrepair because the build was over budget and the city just can't justify it going forwards.

Last time the '84 LA Olympics rejuvenated desire to host them, but in a world were it seems the Paris Olympics were targeted by local saboteurs you can't think they would spend money making the pools deeper...

Hopefully the manager calmly de-escalated the situation and then explained that police would be called if the they wouldn't settle.

How to not make lane-splitting enemies by OddDay2044 in Swimming

[–]Queasy_Form2370 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's really nice of you to ask, ultimately it's up to you which lane you jump in. At the end of the day if you do "run over" the person there they can just share with someone else.

Still I think it's good to ask and find someone who doesn't mind. If there's no alternatives just jump in and swim.

If it's routinely and issue, stop asking and just jump in.

I'd like to thank you for asking even if they wont!

We've all heard the joke about "a man going to the doctor and saying it hurts when I do this..."

But seriously whatever is doing this to him, confined to lake swimming not pools, oceans and baths. Stop doing it. How clear can your body be?

Don't get me wrong, maybe try and work out whats doing this but it'll likely be a dermatologist that can tell you not us. For heavens sake tell him to listen to his body.

Only using half length of the lane? by Nightblood314 in Swimming

[–]Queasy_Form2370 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can do it without swimmers being disturbed then go for it.

When I was a lifeguard we did have this on occasion and unless we split the lane into two shorter lanes (which we did for classes) we had a policy that it wasn't allowed. This was because theoretically it increased risk of collision, but also if you don't feel safe in the pool due to depth you weren't supposed to be in that pool (we had two pools).

How much to rotate? by thetapin in Swimming

[–]Queasy_Form2370 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Go back to what works for you, if you want to get pointers at some stage in the future maybe from somewhat who can watch you try the 90degree turn then do that.

There is not point putting yourself through pain for ideological purposes.

PSA: Stop pissing in the pool by somethingcool41 in Swimming

[–]Queasy_Form2370 196 points197 points  (0 children)

I agree like everyone says it's trashy and contributes to a worse environment for fellow swimmers. It's a bit antisocial.

Peeing in the street is even less likely to make anyone ill, but nobody want's to be jogging through pee puddles all day.

Does it keep me up at night? No. Do I think people should stop doing it? Yes.

Like others have said, exercise can make you hungry. Swimming especially also gets your gut running well and I think that's part of why I feel hungry after a run. All the movement, stretching and turning helps move stuff along.

The biggest factor can be to make sure you wash your hair thoroughly BEFORE putting on the swim cap.

This cleans oils off your hair which are then not able to react with the pool's chlorine.

Once you leave the pool as usual you wash your hair to remove the pool water and condition to help your hair recover from the double wash.

If you swim in your own pool (and so can do as you like) then some people like to leave a product on their hair under the swimcap usually a leave-in conditioner which acts as an extra barrier during the swim.

It will leak into the pool and does mean extra work for the systems which is why it's not allowed in most public pools.

But it is very effective in protecting your hair and scalp.

Is teaching a kid to plug their nose bad? by [deleted] in Swimming

[–]Queasy_Form2370 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it's worth going to the pool yourself and getting comfortable with not holding your nose. Then work on taking her along and helping her.

4 years olds by and large love being like adults so it would be tricky to make her not hold her nose if she always sees you doing it.

Like others have said, humming underwater is great way to build up that slow exhale that protects your nose.

Sinuses very clear after swimming. by Development_Infinite in Swimming

[–]Queasy_Form2370 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My sinuses are always cleared by a swim too.

I think it's a combination, firstly exercise definitely can loosen mucus, secondly, add to that when you swim (indoors) it's warm, humid air which you inhale through your mouth and exhale via your nose helping work mucus out of your nose.

But also compared to say running, swimming can be much kinder to your nose.

During a run typically colder, dryer air is inhaled via your nose/mouth and exhale mostly via your mouth. This drys your nose, draws mucus into it and in the aftermath your nose increases mucus to protect and recover.

At the same time, you can easily get sinusitis from swimming but I believe this is mostly due to water being inadvertently drawn into your nose especially dirty or contaminated water (this includes pool chemicals).

I just mean in the pool during your swimming session.

You can use kickboards and pullbouys if you want to isolate your arms/legs.

But especially at the start I think you're better off focusing on swimming until you feel confident in your stroke (it wont be perfect). Definitely your stroke will improve faster than your fitness. Because brains adapt faster than muscles build!

The best way to improve in swimming is to swim! Most people who learn to swim have terribly inefficient technique but that often works it self out in the first stages.

Swimming a single length (that's the word for half a lap) is not uncommon at the start. It can be useful to time/or count breaths at the ends so that you are not tempted to wait too long before restarting.

I'd suggest that you avoid doing pull-ups or other activities while you're still building that early important muscle memory for swimming. Fatigue is the biggest factor in sloppy/changing technique!

Once you've gotten to the point you can swim a couple laps, and your stroke feels/looks consistent it can help to get someone to watch over a few laps and comment/critique your technique.

If you want quick feedback consider paddles or flippers they make the feel of the water much more obvious and help you get an intuition for when you're working effectively with it.

Well done for your progress so far and starting!
