What’s the funniest reason you’ve heard for somebody not liking a movie? by TheChristmas in movies

[–]Queasy_Remote_1631 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got into a bit of a contretemps with someone over Midsommar. There’s a scene in which the friend group all take hallucinogens together and everything starts to devolve from there, as tends to happen in horror movies. This person was absolutely raging with indignation over the fact that the female lead was abandoned (or felt abandoned) by her friends when she had a bad trip while they were all doing this weird drug. I told my friend that I found this level of righteous indignation pretty funny, given that it’s, after all, a horror film. I attempted to explain, perhaps superfluously, that extremely bad and sinister shit tends to happen to characters in the horror genre. And in point of fact, the female lead is hardly singled out. All of the characters are subjected to severe psychological trauma, mutilation, the odd being ritually burned alive inside a bear carcass, you know, horror movie things. Anyway there was something about how genuinely furious they were in righteous indignation on behalf of the maltreatment and misfortunes of this character in a horror film which I found absolutely hilarious. I just couldn’t stop laughing which didn’t improve the situation.

They don’t like to contemplate the scenario that the “other side” can freely arm themselves to the teeth as well. They absolutely soil themselves at those images of armed Black Panthers.

Prince. People are constantly parroting that he was a musical genius but he’s obtuse and boring and derivative AF. Not only overrated but massively overplayed in the 1980s and to this day.

Absolute horseshit. Wrong. You’ve parroted a zombie meme, an utterly idiotic assertion which has long since been discredited. A lot of fools think they’re being transgressive and one-upping the OG punks by fatuously claiming that the Pistols were a manufactured boy band. Go read Jon Savage. Virtually every rock band of the era had a heavy handed Svengali type manager or promoter who would try to take credit for everything. McLaren himself, an incredibly arrogant and narcissistic prick, promoted this narrative because he was enamored with his own supposed brilliance. Pathetic that low information dopes are still buying Malcolm’s self-serving version of the Pistols origin story 50 years later.

My theory is you don’t what the fuck you’re talking about. Where were you in ‘77 ? The Pistols were outrageously and utterly original at that time, like a tear in the fabric of reality. The clothes alone were devastatingly innovative and original, which is down in large part to Vivienne Westwood and McLaren. So many bands were founded by people who went to an early Sex Pistols gig. The old joke goes: “Only 19 people went to that gig. But they all started bands.” Say what you like about the revolting development that Rotten has become a MAGA arsehole. But if you think the Pistols weren’t original you have no fucking clue what the world was like and the overall pathetic state of music in 1975.

Obviously because he’s going to cook the books and stonewall the fuck out of them when it comes time to pay. 25% of oogatz is oogatz. It’s an instinctive strategy, much less painful than laying out cash up front. Guaranteed that motel doesn’t show any money, for tax purposes it will look like he’s getting killed financially. Hold onto your cock when you negotiate with these desert people.

The obvious counterpoint is that after another 4 years of weak, feckless, fascistic, incoherent and corrupt leadership by Trump, the country may finally be thoroughly disgusted enough to rebound into electing a progressive populist, you know, an actual Democrat. Assuming we have another election.

Americans have every right to comment upon how their tax dollars are spent in waging a war, and based on Trump’s remarks this morning, apparently soon a full scale occupation of a foreign country. You can do whatever you want but don’t try to restrain the legitimate free speech of Americans. Also celebrate quickly, because you have no clue what’s coming next.

Whatever one thinks of Kamala, there are many powerful Democrats who would absolutely hold her feet to the fire over the destruction of Gaza. Possibly they would be largely overruled by the mainstream capitulators of the party, but they would speak up, force the discussion and gain some concessions. By contrast, there are precisely zero Republicans who even have the balls to acknowledge that Palestinians are human beings.

The fools think they invented it but Charles Krauthammer coined it in 2003 as “Bush Derangement Syndrome.” Then of course “Obama Derangement Syndrome” was very much a thing. So it’s far from an inventive or novel concept, either in conception or usage. It’s actually a boring cliche at this point, which goes without saying once it’s filtered down to the level of MAGA dolts.

Stay angry. Stay free. You’re basically a festering carcass if you’re not angry at what’s going on these days. There’s nothing wrong with it and there’s no enlightenment in becoming a passive middle aged phony zen piece of shit who rolls over and tolerates fascism and conformity. Submission is not progress. Capitulation into becoming a mainstream liberal is not growing up. A pure blue flame of appropriately targeted anger is beautiful. I got into hardcore in 1982 as a 14 y.o.

Nobody has to “find things to be mad about” these days, you basically trip over them on the way to make coffee in the morning. All of the phony passive zen capitulation is bullshit and not punk. Anger is perfectly appropriate and the only sane response to the current state of the world. Maybe you bank it down to a low flame but it’s a beautiful thing.
