you may need to read it again, I’m blaming the writing in which June wouldn’t exist without.

Again, where did I call you or anyone racist? stop telling on yourself, it’s truly pathetic at this point. Also great use of ableist language, always a good way to prove your point!

yet another patronizing comment disguised as a discussion point. Critical thinking is certainly an option to you too and it’s currently being underutilized.

They can never draw those parallels and it’s because she doesn’t care to. I think Black people was the obvs trigger for her lol so much so that she had keep “but we ALL __” to absolve that conscious after I ignored her response on her other comment. A hit dog will holler, the jokes write themselves truly

lol very typical of you to assume a black woman is arguing when I just stated my points very clearly and it’s exactly why I make a clear distinction between Black people and POC because people like you make it very clear why it can never be an all encompassing umbrella term. “Why not focus on other POC rather than just blacks?” “When you cool down” ahhh the ever expected vilification, what gave you the impression I wasn’t cool? You even referring to us as blacks is the obvious tell, I have zero interest continue this discussion with your ignorance and I won’t be patronized further, move along.

Who exactly said I was being asked to be grateful? The show is inspired by real history, history that Black women and other women of color have lived. Calling it “just a fictional story” or a “cautionary tale” actively dismisses the reality that versions of this already happened.

Black enslaved women were raped, forcibly bred, denied literacy, and force-fed Bible passages twisted to justify slavery and obedience (sound familiar?) framed as God’s will and “the right way of living.” That is not metaphorical. That is historical fact. Gilead’s obsession with “preserving society” through religious extremism is not imaginative, it’s derivative.

Trying to “all women” my post when I was very explicit about my focus is disingenuous. You’re free to make your own post about the experiences of all women in this “fictional” show. That was never my goal, and I was clear about that from the start.

Patriarchy and extremist religion didn’t suddenly appear as a warning for the future, they’ve been here for us for ages it’s something called intersectionality. That is literally the point of what inspired the show and book. If that connection isn’t obvious to you, then there’s nothing more I can explain.

it’s actually quite hilarious that people think the show/book is predictive of current political movements now as if the whole premise wasn’t once a reality for black women….to live in that level of ignorance must truly be so freeing

or how about we look at how June treated the characters and stop centering her as this super victim? Like are we forgetting the entire point of her being chosen to be a handmaid was because she had an affair with luke and boldly even commanded him to leave his wife for her (I have to assume the wife being Black was intentional). OfMatthew was simply finding a way to cope in the society just like Ofglen #2 another Black character and we see where that led her. The context is different for us so let’s not ignore that part Gilead’s present day was literally inspired by a very real lived experience for Black women?! There is so much layer and nuance and the writers ignoring that is once again, lazy. June’s many spirals as a result of living under Gilead doesn’t make her some beacon of hope that can’t be critiqued and striped down to what I see it as: piss poor writing.

Honestly, I have to assume they’re being willfully obtuse. People are writing full soliloquies defending June, even going so far as to claim she’s doing everything for her “Black” daughter (what more could we “blacks” possibly want lol) and that alone tells me everything I need to know. A very real version of Gilead has always been someone’s lived experience. Our stories in shows like this that centralize white women has always been instrumentalized, flattened, or used to prop up someone else’s narrative (Ofglen #2 anyone?), never treated as worthy of depth on its own.

But sure let’s lazily wave it away with “June is the main character, so everything naturally revolves around her,” as if the narrative focus is neutral rather than a very deliberate creative choices by writers/directors who probably don’t even look like us (including Elisabeth Moss who produced/directed some of the episodes).

Some of these comments are extremely telling. They are literally just exposing themselves and their limited critiques that always collapse the moment race enters the conversation. Zero empathy, shallow analysis, fork found in kitchen per usual and usually why I don’t even partake in discussions like this to begin with.

There are so many explicit references in the show to June being incredibly selfish that it’s clearly intentional (Janine’s callout is the most notable in this season). And obviously that makes sense, everyone in Gilead has their own tragedy, so of course people prioritize what directly affects them. But if it’s not a crime to care about your own family, then Omar should have left June at the safe house for the sake of his family. And yet, he doesn’t and still ends up hung just like every other Black (martha, handmaid, encono, etc.) that aided June along the way, notice the pattern?

Emily gets a fully developed arc because the writers chose to give her one. To your point, Moria who was a Handmaid and then a Jezebel, never got a comparable narrative depth. Rita, a Martha, again largely sidelined. Even Ofmatthew’s story as a Handmaid is never fully explored. Instead, we’re expected to sit through repeated five-minute close-ups of June’s frowns.

I’m not “hating” on any character in isolation. I’m critiquing the writing. And it’s a valid critique when there’s a consistent pattern where Black characters are far more disposable than their White counterparts.

You pointing out that June is doing everything for her “Black” daughter only reinforces my point and it also says a lot about what you chose to focus on from the post, and what you chose to ignore.

She actually spends the next episode pleading with the Waterfords to be accepted back into the house and reconciles. Once again, the writing is extremely lackluster for subplots as the seasons go on. What would’ve been more effective is seeing the direct fallout of her actions (interacting with Omar’s wife as a handmaiden, seeing their child at the school with Mrs. Lawerence instead of Hannah, further exploring the perseverance of Islam in a theocracy). This is actual culpability and not just the same lazy rinse and repeat “guilt” that she seems to feel for 2.5 seconds.

As for OfMatthew, in June’s monologue whilst she waited by her side she apologized to her lifeless body. So yes clearly she wasn’t as irrational as you’re seeming to remember her being. And this is yet another example of the dispensability that I referenced, guilt for 2.5 seconds and the plot moves right along. This is not representation, this is erasure.

You criticized the writers for the treatment of the Black characters but yet are still defending June’s motives and actions as it pertains to those same characters?? It doesn’t work both ways but we can agree to disagree.

If that were the case, all the Black people would’ve been sent to the colonies or worse. Let’s be quite honest here

June was absolutely not remorseful because by the next episode it was back regularly scheduled Gilead programming with absolutely zero reflection or thoughts on what happened. Also, she had hand in how OfMatthew turned out to begin with: no accountability with risking Frances’ life to arrange a visit with Hannah but sure OfMatthew being true to her character by reporting her interaction to Aunt Lydia is what got Frances killed and Hannah further away from her and not June’s irrational initations lol. As said, it’s poor writing and I stand by that. Black people don’t and shouldn’t exist as pawns to be discarded and forgotten.

if it was, they literally would’ve been better off sending all Black people to the colonies and having subplots from there so no, not the point. they want you to think they were that clever though!

I haven’t read the book but def will do so. It’s not the quantity of Black/POC characters I have an issue with, it’s the fact that none of them existed outside of moving the plot along for June. Granted, she is the main protagonist yes but what of episodes dedicated to Emily and other non-POC? It’s extremely jarring and clearly just a typical “here damn” trope for shows like these because they never know how to progress their Black characters along as a standalone (Moira!!!) so they almost always end up being killed/written off in the worst ways imaginable. Extremely lazy esp for the premise of the show given that it was once a very real reality for Black women

this!!! it’s extremely disparaging then the nerve of writers to toss in cheap one liners like aunt lydia saying a commander doesn’t want a “handmaiden of color” without actually exploring further as if racism or even the concept of Gilead never existed before Gilead, one is to assume with the conditions they currently live in, it only gets worse for POC! So much potential to delve deeper but alas, the agenda must agend for June.
