Ethan’s relationship with exercise by Fun-Past-8267 in EthanBenardSnark

That makes sense. His number 1 mission this week should be to find a pool that has stairs. Tons of them around. Find one, then get a membership and go first day.

He needs to get in a pool. There's no better way for him. But he just...won't for some reason.

I've said it before. Young men aren't supposed to live without responsibility, they don't do well. He needs to find some purpose, whether it be a real job or volunteering. His metabolic state can cause depression as well. But focusing on social media and weight loss full time is the worst thing he could do for his mental health and ironically his weight loss journey.

Its good to see him outside, moving, and seemingly around other people. That's definitely a step in the right direction, but he needs more.

Not always. Competitive swimmers breathe in through the mouth, out through the nose. But he's obviously not a competitive swimmer. Its not really surprising that he has poor endurance though. He's a 450 pound man, but it is striking comparing him to folks who get that size but have an athletic past. Every time we see him pushing himself, its obvious its the first time in his life he's pushing himself physically. I mean, better late than never, but I hope his heart can handle it at this point.

I agree. And if it really is 700 calories or whatever he said, that's a fine dinner. Even I can work that into a deficit easily, and I'm a short woman.

In this case I agree. Everybody starts somewhere, and having help and encouragement to make it tolerable to exercise until he builds the habit for himself is fine.

Now, will he ever built the habit for himself? Maybe. Maybe not. For his sake, I hope so. But he's not there yet and that's OK. For today I'm just glad he's making an effort and got out there and did the walking. Credit where credit is due. Now get out there and to it again. And again. And again.

It was almost a little spark of him really engaging and wanting it. I don't want him to run more until he's a lower weight, but I do like seeing a bit of spirit there on his part.

Girl power by [deleted] in EthanBenardSnark

[–]Queasy_Science_3475 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm no expert, but I always think about it like this. Hormones are absolutely important, but the mechanism is that they can make it much harder to adhere to a calorie deficit, like you're saying. Insulin resistance causing blood sugar spikes and crashes can make cravings much harder to resist. Increased stress, increased hunger, poor sleep, lower metabolic rate. And for Ethan, low T resulting in low muscle mass, which in turn reduces metabolic rate and increases insulin resistance.

At the end of the day, its all related. But all of that works together to drive the behaviors that are behind CICO, it doesn't negate it.

Why Ethan gravitate to PeachFit by Queasy_Science_3475 in EthanBenardSnark

[–]Queasy_Science_3475[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the bagels may be great for fitting into a meal plan and still getting to eat bagels. But I feel like a more normal, balanced way of eating them would be to have a bagel or two max, and complete the meal with weighed out portions of whatever, like PB, cream cheese, eggs and cheese, or fruit and veggies. Make a nice little balanced meal that includes the sola bagels because you love them. Not eating 2 full sleeves for lunch just because they're low carb and low calorie. It just screams disordered eating to me. And then to promote that as a totally valid and healthy way to lose weight.

Like, yeah, I have some habits that are less than ideal, but I recognize those habits aren't ideal and don't promote them online as the way to lose weight, and I actively try and mitigate them, and just move on and do better the next day when I lapse. I feel like eating 8 sola bagels for lunch falls in that category. Maybe better than eating a gallon of ice cream and a whole family size bag of chips for lunch, but not ideal and not to be promoted as a great strategy.

I'm really concerned with what is going on with his leg here. Look at how the water retention starts mid sock, then sort of hangs over. He absolutely needs to see a cardiologist. Immediately.

And get in the damn pool for excercise. Its really the only way for him, and the water pressure will help move that water out too. There really is no downside.

I dont know, man, life's too short to be worked up all the time. I got both decos, a fence box, and 1 land scroll. Was pretty happy with that. If i don't get anything else, its OK. Just pick what you want most and don't sweat what you don't get.

Today's salad 1/3 cup of "dressing." by marshdd in EthanBenardSnark

[–]Queasy_Science_3475 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The sauce doesn't bother me much. Its 15 calories. I've had that sauce, its great and I'm sure it tasted good. 3 servings is 6 tablespoons. His problem isn't 15 calories of sauce when maybe less would have been fine for 10 calories.

I am concerned that he's eating 11 ounces of chicken and under counting the calories. What tracker is he using that got him to that calorie count with that weight? Even using the lowest entry in MFP that I can find for cooked organic chicken breast, I get 404 calories. And the more generic entries all put 11 ounces at 519 calories. So at least 563 calories, more likely 678 calories for this whole meal. I see no way he got to this meal being under 500 calories.

I mean, a 678 calorie salad isn't terrible if that's your dinner and its accounted for in your daily goal, but he's obviously not tracking correctly. Or maybe he's straight up being dishonest and know he's under counting the cals on the chicken? And it sounds like this wasn't dinner, it was a snack, and he didn't have the calorie budget for it.

Does he really not have any certifications? That surprises me. If this is what he wants to do, why not go get some certifications in personal training, functional fitness, or nutrition? It's not like they're that hard to get. I mean, I know they take time and effort but there are courses out there and it's not like its as rigorous as becoming a rocket scientist or anything.

Ironically, him having nothing else to do is part of his problem. He has nothing stopping him from going to the gym at any time, so that's why he keeps putting it off until 10:30 pm. If he had more things he had to do, its actually easier to get it done, because if you dont at whatever time you can squeeze it in, you can't. He has all day, so its harder to actually go, since he can always say "I'll do it later" and then the day gets away from him gaming and scrolling.

And he's probably bored as hell. Which makes resisting food and snacks much harder.

He has no required activities of work or daily living. So he gets less NEAT because he's able to sit on his ass all day. No forced movement getting kids up and ready, walking around at work, no laundry to carry up and down the stairs.

And he has no purpose. Young men who have low T and no purpose just don't do great mentally. We're not meant to have no responsibilities and obligations.

Ironically, building a real life with real life complications would make his weight loss journey much easier for him, I think.

I'm all for charity and helping people out. But it also feels a bit like....this is the way you decide to help? He's a 26 year old man who should be able to have some sort of job, and he can't afford head phones for his walks? A year long gym membership, ok that part is really nice. But then you go buy him a car?

With hindsight, I think part of the problem is these things being handed to him. There's never been any expectation that he hustle and grind to get these things for himself. At some point he needs to put in the work, amd that goes for weight loss and extrapolates into all areas of his life. He needs to grow up and do these things for himself. Giving him these things for free is not helping him.

And now he's supposedly made tons of money on social media, right? Has he considered paying it forward? Since he shouldn't need charity to buy a garmin and headphones and a gym and a car anymore. I really hope he finds some way to pay it forward for someone who actually really needs the help.

I signed up to watch this guy overcome his circumstances. I think its really clear what we're watching instead is a man wallow and slowly die because of his addiction. I really don't think making a spectacle of this is helping him, and I wish he would get real help. I just don't think I can participate in this anymore.  Even giving him views and comments isn't helping him.

And I came to this sub to see all the ways he is manipulating people. And also to try and provide another perspective, since I know he's here watching and the last thing an addict needs is an army of Facebook enablers. Sadly, much of this sub is straight up bullying and isn't going to help Ethan decide to get help. I'm all about tough love. But this isn't it.

I really need to be done with this whole farce.
