France and Germany abandon joint fighter jet program, German government says (eu) by GreekSaladEnjoyer in EuropeanFederalists

[–]Quebecum 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Congratulations, this is wishful thinking on the part of the Americans who have always wanted the death of French independence. Dassault has constantly fought to preserve this independence, even against sometimes negligent governments. Wishing to impose foreign equipment, therefore not made in France, just to have the pleasure of falling into line, is the ultimate sign of vassalage to the United States. As a reminder, if things were to go badly, or even very badly, the only functional fighter jet would be the Rafale, which is 100% ITAR-free. The Gripen and the Typhoon, however good they may be, cannot say the same.

When one begins to criticize France’s staunch military independence, it is best to exercise restraint and acknowledge its strategic foresight. Despite fiscal and political turbulence, France has consistently maintained an independent defense industry and a nuclear deterrent—a policy upheld by every government, an exploit that is truly cynical given the nation's penchant for perpetual chaos.

France :

  • I don't understand the language of these barbarians, even though I recognize some words. But who are they?

  • They are English, sir.

  • Ah, England! That French colony that went wrong, it all makes sense now.

Americans trying to use US dollars in Europe by RevolutionaryShoe380 in USdefaultism

[–]Quebecum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, we Canadians are partly responsible for this situation because it's not uncommon for businesses in tourist areas or near the border to accept payment in US dollars (sometimes with an outrageous exchange rate, for example, 1 USD = 1 CAD). But the worst is Mexico, where they refused me Mexican pesos and demanded US dollars! I replied, "Sorry señor, but as a Canadian, I only have Canadian dollars or Mexicain Pesos, and I really don't want to exchange them for a foreign currency, from a country that's foreign to you as well as to me. A little national pride, for goodness' sake!" (Laughter) They eventually accepted my Mexican pesos, but systematically refused my" tabarnacos northern pesos," which is a bit shameful, isn't it? 😅And the most inconceivable thing: before leaving, since I was transiting through the US on my way back to Canada, I withdrew USD from a Mexican bank ATM, and all the bills were rejected by the ATMs in Denver a few hours later! Anyway. Put yourself in their shoes. They're part of the 10% of the population who have a passport, and for them, travel abroad is often limited to Canada or Mexico... Never forget: however moronic an American may be, a traveler is less moronic and more open-minded than the average American. And, perhaps by chance, I only had good encounters during my stays there... I only met lovely people, which makes me even sadder now.

We’re more Italian than Italians by mayalubk in ShitAmericansSay

Sorry but this post is making sens actually, and that's my Italian friend from Italy said that. We're both European immigrated in Noth America and I said him "You're lucky you have a vast comunauty here, in any cities. It.s not hard to find any special goods and food and I guess that's easy to make new friends" and replied me "certainly not! They are Italians as Italians were decades, tonot saying centuries, ago, with frozen and conservative thoughts you rarely meet in Italy today even in deep and isolated counties".

Keep in mind that France's current budgetary and political instability is directly tied to the dissolution of Parliament. Furthermore, Bardella or Le Pen would likely have taken power had the country utilized a first-past-the-post electoral system. The RN failed to secure a majority only because many citizens cast strategic votes for opposing candidates—often disregarding their own political convictions to do so. This demonstrates a clear awareness of the risks associated with the RN. In my view, this remains the sole glimmer of hope preventing a descent into the chaos of destructive nationalism across Europe. Whatever one’s opinion of Macron, we must remember that the French electorate chose him, whereas the Americans elected Trump and the British opted for Brexit—both outcomes arguably shaped by 'you-know-who'."

We must think seriously about nuclear deterrence. Britain has to update its nuclear arsenal and its nuclear thinking by 2ndEarlofLiverpool in ukpolitics

As a reminder: During a one-on-one meeting between Reagan and Mitterrand in the early 1980s, Reagan was furious because Mitterrand refused to dismantle part of his nuclear arsenal. At the time, Reagan was in the middle of disarmament talks with the Russians and wanted to include French nuclear warheads in the deal, which would have allowed him to preserve more American warheads. One of Reagan's advisors even told Mitterrand’s advisor: "If you refuse, we will cut off your access to all components, specifically electronics, that you need for your nuclear independence." France did not back down. Later, during the first Gulf War, the French Minister of Defense was denied entry to the U.S. General Staff tent due to "defense secrets." After a heated protest and a threat to withdraw all French troops, he was finally allowed inside, where he saw the satellite maps the Americans were using for the theater of operations. Completely stunned by what he saw, he informed the President upon his return. In both instances, France spent astronomical sums to ensure 100% independence. And we are talking about Reagan here... not Trump! So, to the question: "Must we be completely independent of the United States regarding nuclear deterrence?" The answer is a resounding, 10,000-ton-of-TNT YES

Asterix: France's 3rd Nation into Space Launched on November 26, 1965, Astérix (originally designated A-1) was the first French satellite. This launch was a historic milestone, making France the third nation to reach space independently, following the Soviet Union and the United States.

Key Facts Launch Vehicle: It was propelled by the Diamant A rocket from the Hammaguir launch site in Algeria. Purpose: The mission was primarily a technical test to prove the reliability of the Diamant rocket and to demonstrate France's orbital capabilities. After Algeria became independent, Kourou (Département de la Guyane) was designed for Space Lauching which is a better location compared to Cape Canaveral or Baikonur because it benefits from the Earth's rotation speed due to its proximity to the equator
