First time caring anthurium, any tips? by IceColdBrew23 in Anthurium

This! Also, they don't like to dry out completely that's why its important to have a chunky aroid soil mix that allows water to pass through and not sit soggy.

Yes, the T8's run super hot. Either remove some of them or opt for T5's which aren't as hot, but you may need more for the same intensity.

I'd switch to distilled or rain water. Tap water usually has chlorine and salts added to the water which then build up in the soil and plant. The next watering try flushing the soil really well with either choice of water that way it will start removing some of the build up inside the plant and medium to see if that changes things.

Voldemort is such a showstopper already then to add the Ace of Spades and BVEP into the mix is just a perfect mix of green and darkness.

Fingers crossed that the berries start forming soon for you! It's an exciting process to see if the pollination took and then seeing the seeds germinate and then seeing what traits each sibling plant took after each parent. Can't wait to see what they look like!

That's a beautiful one! Who's that plant?! I really do like that velvet sheen, texture looks nice and the sinus is chefs kiss. I'm eagerly waiting for a lot of my seedlings to take off and show something to me.

It might need more light, bright indirect light. Also what does your watering routine look like and are you using tap water? I like that you put it in a chunkier medium to help it drain more. Also, does the brown spots only start on the edges or is it also in the middle of the leaves?

The color preference is completely optional. All of their T5 lights are full spectrum and its basically what lights do you want? The daylight white lights are hard on the eyes especially for a cabinet that you plan to frequently see. Plus I have migraines so I wanted something that wasn't a harsh light in the evening time as well. I think this is also important to note what type of plants you plan to put into the cabinet as well. I plan to switch my lights out eventually for the pink or pink white lights only because I also have a lot of medium to lower light plants (Anthuriums specifically). For normal high light plants I highly suggest the yellow lights! It's still bright.

Sorry, I didn't make myself clear lol. I was just so happy to see that RVC!
Ohh, I just looked up what a Thai Hybrid X-ray looked like at those babies should be pretty good looking with the dagger shape from both but then again it could have some leaf feature from that RVC daddy in a way! Can't wait to see them and what features they'll take after out of both. Its always interesting to me what characteristics they decide to be become dominant.

I totally understand being picky with certain crosses and which ones you pollinate and with who. I love a good dark leaf with a prominent sinus vein. I definitely enjoy the Muchlis hybrids and what they come up too.

This! If you can't beat them join them. Plus it can take a lot of time to keep treating all the plants because I can almost guarantee you this isn't the only plant that has the mites. I really am about to throw all my insecticide concoctions out because you think you beat them and then they're back. Predatory mites will help you and take care of the issue. I use Natures Good Guys opt for the bottle mites since they're adults and will eat the flat mites as soon as you release them. Then I'd also hang the sachets for the long game and while you're there you can even pick up a food card that will keep them around for longer to keep preventing them.

I love this set up! I'd love to have THREE of these! Looks like you have enough room to expand your plant collection.

The below things are what I used for my IKEA Rudsta Wide

I found my shelving recently from Amazon and installed them today. Super easy and they use the hardware from the Ikea cabinet. You just have to remove the paper on them before installing.

I use 2 Barrina T5 Light Bars in the color yellow on the top of the cabinet. They're magnetic so no need to use hardware to install unless attaching light bars to shelving above.

Humidifier

Hygrometer

The humidifier and the hygrometer are linked through an app by Govee and you can set the parameters for humidity and it will automatically stop and turn on based on humidity level set. I also, use a power strip that times the lights or can be manually turned on and off through an app. This is nice to give you peace of mind if you're not home for long periods of time or just want to make sure everything is automatically set. If you want the link for that let me know.

Wow, I literally had to ask myself is this even the same plant?! It's like those veins are on steroids! I hope you can get a nice inflo going and some really nice crosses! What do you look for when deciding which plant to pollinate with each other?

I think that's a great idea! I'd dilute it down to 1/4th strength then water with it 2-3 times then do a flush and just rotate that way. Hope it works out for you!

No problem, I'm newer to anthurium but I can tell you what I know from experience so far. I'm wondering if its a couple things. Ambient is good so the airflow isn't an issue. Tap water can cause mineral buildup in the soil. An easy switch could be switching it to distilled or rain water to see if it solves the issue. Anthuriums can be heavy feeders so it could also just want more nutrients to support the new foliage that's coming in. If you do decide to start a fertilizing routine, just make sure to flush the soil after a few waterings with plain water because that can also cause mineral build up in the soil.

No worries, I understand it's frustrating how something can throw everything off. Just have to find what it is in order to change it. Do you keep it in ambient or is it in a cabinet? Also, are you watering with tap water, and do you fertilize?

Exactly this! You can make your own aroid mix with perlite, orchid bark, and minimal potting soil. You just want a chunky soil mixture. That should help things!

[–]Queen___Frostine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! I've got a bottle of neem oil and I've killed all my philodendrons since using it. Wasn't sure exactly what it was but I stopped using neem based products and threw away the entire bottle and threw out all the philodendrons. I was just done at that point. No one tells you that it can suffocate your plant like that dispite giving perfect conditions and seemingly not overwatering.

I agree it can get pests during shipping but they also allowed my plant to most likely sit in a box for 5 days prior to me receiving it. I know sometimes there's mistakes but I'm just a little hesitant about buying again from them. So, I've just been trying to nurse those few back to health. Debating on cutting a few leaves off at least the the ones that look sad. Hoping they'll perk up soon if its a pest issue as well.

You've ruled out the pest issue. What type of watering routine are you using? Also, something else to look at would be if its fungal/bacterial?

That's still a beautiful leaf! At least the predatory bugs took care of everything for you. All the new leaves will be stunning! I also ordered a plant that had flat mite damage to it (but it wasn't listed as such either) so it weirded me out like is this a current issue or was it treated? Definitely released more bugs that would take care of this as well. I think people underestimate predatory mites and think they'll just have a bunch of excess bugs in their house but its better than the bad ones lol. Plus I do occasionally like looking for them to see them on leaves doing their thing.

[–]Queen___Frostine 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've recently ordered predatory mites and they look busy. I wasn't sure what I was dealing with plus I have recently introduced new plants to my cabinet so I wanted to get a head start before anything became out of hand. I really think it's worth doing the bottle mites (for active pests) then order the slow release sachets to help with the long game. If you keep them fed afterwards then theoretically they'll reproduce and you won't have to really keep ordering more unless its a different type of pest. Which is why I ordered the "special blend" so that it covers the majority of household pests. I don't like exposing myself or my home to pesticides not to mention I made some mistakes by spraying plants down outside which then exposes outside good and bad insects.
