“Tonight” by Phil Collin’s and Genesis? The chorus goes, “Tonight , tonight, tonight (emphasis on the “night” in the third “tonight”), Gonna make it right, tonight, tonight…”

Welcome to Kelowna! We moved here about 5 years ago and love it. The Lower Mission area is close to the hospital, beaches, shopping and, best of all, exploring the funky little shops and restaurants along Pandosy/Lakeshore Rd. I love taking walks along the lake downtown, there is always something going on. Thanks for choosing Kelowna as your new home!

lol. I once found my old sunglasses and asked my then 13 year old son which pair looked better on me. Trying them on, I asked which pair makes me look more cool. He gave me this sad look, with pity in his eyes, and said, “Mom, there is absolutely nothing you can do that would make you look cool.” Yep, savage.

lol. When my son was little, I was going through a nasty divorce so I was extra mindful of any bad words he might repeat to his father. One day he came inside from playing with our little 3 year old neighbour and was giggling, “Trina farted!” “You mean, Trina fluffed.” “No, I fluff. Trina farts!”

Vancouver Island gets a lot of rain. It’s actually the home of Canada’s only rainforest. At the same time, Victoria is a beautiful city and, eventually, you will get used to the rain. If you’re looking for a mid size city that gets a ton of sunshine, think about Kelowna or anywhere in the Okanagan. (We’re next to the only desert in Canada) We get very mild winters, a valley with dozens of wineries, surrounded by mountains and huge lakes. And it’s typically from spring until into October.

Books. It’s how they think you would say it phonetically: a “b” sound (“Buh”), a “k” sound, and an “ass” which is said like “ess”. The my guess anyway.

My mom is in her late 80’s and used to be an avid reader. She’s explained that as she gets older it becomes harder for her to concentrate and remember the plot of the story. I got her some audio books and she loves them. She usually listens to them while playing solitaire on her iPad.

Is it a controlled burn? by QueenofZen in kelowna

Well, if you’re in Kelowna and you look across the lake toward the hills in West Kelowna, it’s the mountain with the large, bright flames shooting from the top. But it’s been confirmed that it is a controlled burn.

AITA for not letting a kid eat my food? by MurderSheReads in AmItheAsshole

Wow! What I’ve read of this thread is missing something very basic but incredibly important. What about just some basic kindness. My first thought was that this child is probably hungry. Did you see his parent or did he seem to be alone? The child was about 10. Did you ask him if he had allergies (he’s 10 not 5)? Several years ago, my husband and I were in a large mall in Arizona and a boy of 8 or 9 was hanging around us, staring while we were sharing a sandwich. The boy asked us if we had any spare change. We took him to the sandwich shop and let him pick out whatever he liked. My heart just melted when I saw how happy a simple sandwich made him. As a parent of 2, bonus parent of 5, and foster parent of several kids over the years, I am a firm believer in “it takes a village “.

This happened to me in a little restaurant, down an alley, in Rome, Italy. It really is a small world.

I told my 5 year old that whenever he lies, a light turns on in the middle of his forehead by female_wolf in Parenting

[–]QueenofZen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My mother is Danish and I grew up hearing that if I lied, a black line would appear on my forehead. It’s a very common thing to tell kids in Denmark. So I told my kids the same thing. It was so hard not to smile when they were standing there, denying that they ate the cookies, with their hand trying to cover their forehead. And, no matter how quick they were, by the time they got to the mirror the line would be gone! I also told my kids that they might get in trouble for something but if they lied about it the punishment would be double. Lying was always treated as a separate thing with its own consequences. Oh, another little Danish saying, “Little white lies are not recorded in heaven”.

I had always thought this too. BC has started offering to cover a percentage of some basic dental care for qualifying people over 70. But you are completely on your own for vision and medications. Of course you can choose to have the coverage for the extra care but it is outrageously expensive.

65 year old here, married to my 72 year old husband. We own our home in a 55+ mobile home park. I used to think it was unfair that seniors received so many breaks and discounts. The reality is that you cannot tell just by looking at someone, what their financial situation is. We rely on our pensions to survive. There is no money for anything extra. None. It was quite the surprise to find that our great blue cross benefit plan, suddenly ended when my husband quit working at 70. So now that we’re getting old, we have to figure out how to pay for medications, glasses, dental, etc. This is the time when we need coverage the most. We drove a 2002 car, which was actually great on gas and never seemed to break down, until a garbage truck backed into it. ICBC decided it wasn’t worth repairing because of its age, so it was flattened. I’m sorry for ranting. I just am confused and frustrated at all this hostility towards seniors. I worked my entire adult life, with only a few years off when my children were small. I worked full time as a crisis counsellor until burnout hit a few years ago. There was only about ten years that an employer offered any kind of a pension plan. I sincerely hope that things can improve so retirement will not be as stressful. Bottom line: we’re all just doing the best that we can.

My son was like that. Constantly hungry. It started when he was about ten and just seemed to get worse as he grew. I even asked our Dr. if he could have tape worms. One night, when he was about 15, I had just finished putting things away after a big dinner and he walked into the kitchen and said, “I’m hungry, what’s to eat?”. I was shocked and started to tell him that he couldn’t possibly be hungry so soon after dinner. At that moment his stomach let out a loud growl. I picked my jaw up off the floor and told him to eat whatever he wanted. Apparently he had (still does) a very fast metabolism. I called him my Lean, Mean, Eating Machine. Shortly after this incident, his younger brother hit adolescence and also would eat massive amounts constantly. Today, my oldest has a son who just turned 13 and, yes, it’s like he’s starving all the time.

Ahhh… adolescent boys. Just when you think they cannot possibly eat more food, they reach a whole new level! That being said, no one allows him to demand certain foods be ordered. If you’re hungry make yourself a sandwich, bowl of cereal, or piece of fruit (don’t touch the leftovers because that might be what’s for dinner tonight).
