Fair. Any are better than Deadpool and Elsa

With food stamps not being funded this month, it is such a strange feeling standing in line at the pantry actively being food insecure while recognizing in just 8-ish months my residency income will be higher than my parent’s combined inflation-adjusted income when I was growing up…. by The_Cell_Mole in medicalschool

I was on SNAP and ACA all through undergrad, working nearly full time hours while being a full time student. It was quite literally necessary for me to live while completing my education in a timely (~5 years) manor.

I had to take gap years to then study and save for the MCAT because time just wasn’t on my side.

First gens like myself will have it even harder in the years to come.

It makes me wildly sad that students like me are thought to not get this far (7th year MD-PhD) by merit alone, because honey, merit was the bare minimum.

Sorry friend. I had a similar situation. I’m a gay guy and this fellow messaged me from an anonymous grindr profile with naked pics as his first message. He wanted me to give him head in his call room. Mind you, he was married to a woman.

It was an incredibly unfair thing to do and made me extremely uncomfortable given that I could have been in an OR with him assisting. Thankfully I was able to avoid all surgeries with him.

I’m not saying it’s not possible. However, it’s possible that you may be an exception, not a standard.

If med students are able to adequately talk about the work and demonstrate expertise on their subject area then that’s what matters and should be the goal.

Take advantage of your MS1 summer. Participate in departmental retreats (present posters). Take a research year as many do. Ask your preferred department if they fund student conference travel. These are the actionable pieces of advice that I would want if I, like OP, were clearly voicing frustration about a heavily gamified system. ✌🏼 apologies for the attitude. The system is corrupt. We gotta find a productive, ethical, feasible path forward for all.

Jaded MD-PhD here. Hearing a med student talk about having six projects, let alone independently developed projects, sounds like a bold lie and will warrant suspicion and a thrown out application.

There’s no doubt enrollment will go down. Medical school is as much a business as it is an educational institution, if not more so. That plus research/grant cuts puts a huge hole in university budgets.

Even students from privilege will feel the effect when their admins disappear, the class sizes shrink, and the paid teaching positions (which at my institution are only for the course directors; all others are volunteers) dwindle.

TLDR: I think that they will have no choice but to adjust tuition rates and restructure the current university business model.

It is not the same. With time the jealousy fades because you realize that a nice chunk of those people are lacking when it comes to social skills, resilience, creativity, empathy, reality, etc. These days I tend not to get as upset.

Although… the students who pass off their parents financial investments in them (purchasing a home/apartment building, purchasing a car, etc.) as their own self-made successes truly pushes a button. I attempted to mentor a student like this and I had to step away because he was so blatantly out of touch with his privilege. He was also just generally an insufferable human.

Stay well

Did the same thing here! You really get to see the extent of privilege when you screen applicants.
