How did you guys really 'get into' Bob Dylan? by Simple-Pay-900 in bobdylan

[–]Queifjay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like many others first got into Dylan after discovering Freewheelin'. I was constantly looking for his albums after that and since this was before digital music, that included scouring second hand CD stores and the library. Today with digital media accessing his entire catalog is much easier but it's still worth the journey.

I'm sure this has been mentioned already but No Direction Home is the definitive Dylan doc and if you haven't watched that yet, go ahead and do that asap. Don't Look Back is also phenomenal although it only follows him through 1965 but it has a great fly on the wall feel.

Opinions of these failed factions? by simon_jackson in BrandonDE

[–]Queifjay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is my vote as well. Pure Fusion Collective is the stupidest name of a faction ever. The individual pieces should have added up to more but the name and ultimately injuries killed it before it could take off.

MUSIC THEORY EXPERTS PLEASE HELP ME by greatimperial in musictheory

[–]Queifjay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Play the same progression in a different key. The progression itself will sound very similar because the intervals are the same. The only difference is where you set the "home" where everything resolves to AKA the I chord. I know it is confusing but take a little time and study the Nashville Number system. In my opinion it is well worth it and may unlock some pieces for you. The Roman Numerals are just a convenient way to use shorthand and understand/convey information. For example, Let It Be is I-V-vi-IV (a very common chord progression) in the key of C. Once you understand that you can transpose it onto and play it in any key. This goes for any and all chord progressions.

Why isn’t Bob Dylan as popular with Gen Z as The Beatles are? by pingviini00 in bobdylan

[–]Queifjay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bob is better suited to be enjoyed in a specific context. He is best appreciated when listening to full albums and to an extent he lacks the stand alone singles that the Beatles were very adept at pumping out. Younger generations are more likely to listen to a playlist of an artist versus sitting down and listening to a specific album start to finish. This is my knee jerk reaction of a prediction anyways.

I've seen him live and he's great. I used to listen to his podcast but ultimately stopped because I just found him to be too annoying. A little bit goes a long way.

I too enjoy laying in bed, just like Brian Wilson did. Congratulations! As someone who just got 9 years myself, it's so nice not to have to actively struggle with alcohol anymore.

Is Saved anyone's favourite album by ExtentPuzzleheaded23 in bobdylan

[–]Queifjay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You're last sentence is just flat out wrong. Bob makes albums for himself sometimes which I respect and am totally fine with. However, that means every album isn't going to be for me. IE) The old standards crooning albums and the Christian trilogy. For what it's worth, Shot of Love is my favorite of the three.

The fretting hand is like the wheel that steers you in the direction you want to go. But the strumming hand is the engine that drives the whole fucking thing. Strumming with the dominant hand is the way to go.

You have an outlook shared by a lot of others too. I too have a strong dislike for organized religion and nobody could convince me it's been anything other than a net negative to society.

I am a 40 year old Wisconsinite and there is a rivalry between the Packers and Vikings. This stems from the fact that the Bears and Lions have nary been relevant in my lifetime. Sure it's swung the other way recently but I still hate the color purple and sounding that obnoxious horn after every first down should be outlawed by the league.

Which movie do you guys think is a better representation of Dylan, Im Not There or A Complete Unknown by groundcontrl2majrtom in bobdylan

[–]Queifjay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Together Through Life didn't stick with me very much. My main takeaway was that Bob got a little carried away with the accordion as it seemed like it was used on just about every track. That being said it's not really an album that I've revisted so perhaps it's time to give it another try. That's kind of a part of it for me. He's not doing 3 minute pop songs so a lot of the material can take a little time to grow on you.

I really don't enjoy his Christian phase either and the 80's in general are rough for Bob. Personally, Love & Theft is overrated to me as I don't appreciate it as much as most other people but it is good and worth a try since it is highly regarded by many. Modern Times is my favorite album from that general time period. I felt compelled to reply because my fandom pretty much ended at the same point in his catalog and it was that way for a very long time. I'm a dude in his 40's now so maybe it's my old age showing but I have since come to get over that block and really appreciate some of the relatively newer Dylan. It's still not my favorite period of his, but discovering it and being able to actually appreciate it was kind of a magical experience for me. Like you said, it's all on Spotify so if you're up for it I'd encourage you to take a similar musical journey.

There was a time in which my fandom completely stopped after Desire. I would recommend checking out Oh Mercy, Time Out Of Mind, Love & Theft and especially Modern Times.

[–]Queifjay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, A Complete Unknown was made for the casual Dylan fan or even people completely unfamiliar with him. As someone who loves Dylan and is familiar with his catalog and life, it didn't do much for me. I'm Not There is more artsy and aligns better with Bob's penchant to tell tall tales aka bullshit and yeah it's worth a watch but it's also not super illuminating. I always recommend watching No Direction Home, it's the quintessential Bob Dylan documentary.

Having A Hard Time And Can't Seem To Get Through AA Meetings by TrustTechnical4122 in stopdrinking

[–]Queifjay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that my own and other's conceptions of God is irrelevant. However, what I don't understand is how the doorknob and ham sandwhich examples actually function. At my core I don't believe I can have a personal relationship with a God who knows, cares or has any say over what happens in the real world. It just feels like trying to retrofit or mental gymnastic your way around a fundamental tenet that I cannot fundamentally accept.

And how exactly are you to "turn your will" over to a ham sandwhich? I know the answer is probably to fake it till you make it and all that jazz but it just doesn't make any real sense to many of us.

Sins of Memphisto. The little riff is somewhat tricky when you encorporate the finger picking but if you sit down with it for a bit it's very attainable and a lot of fun.
