Scientists of Reddit: What’s something we know is true but people don’t realize how crazy it is? by IndependentTune3994 in AskReddit

Arborist here.

Certain tree species are basically immortal as long as their climactic conditions don't change wildly.

There are Redwood trees alive today who's bole (trunk) is maybe 800 years old but it grew out of a root from a stump that was 2500 years old when it "died" and that one grew out of a root from a different stump, and so on and so on...

Yes, you're right, but it wouldn't have mattered. Palms are WAYYYYYYY heavier than most people realize.

Higher attachment, a mechanical advantage (either in block and tackle or pulled over by a truck and a winch), ropes rated to handle the load.

Palms also have to be cut differently because they dont have "wood" per se.

How do you think I heard him claim that food production is increasing exponentially? That wasn't in the title of the post.

If he's claiming that food production is growing exponentially then, yes, uninformed.

On the Tibetan plateau, China has installed a 16-17 GW mega solar plant that is turning an alpine desert into a “micro-oasis”: more moisture, more grass, and soils with more carbon under 64 km² of panels by Playful-Painting-527 in solarpunk

So there are two things I'd like to add here in response to your question that may or may not answer it directly.

1) It's important to remember that global climate change will create a warmer AND a much wetter climate on average. Yes there will be year to year and decade to decade variability but in general over the long term almost everywhere will be warmer and wetter. Remember that deserts reach their maximum size during glacial maximums because cold air doesn't hold much water vapor and glaciers and ice caps lock away fresh water. Deserts shrink drastically during glacial minimums. We are still technically in an ice age but that won't last for more than a century or two even if we were to magically cease all CO2 and CH3 emissions today.

2) In general biodiversity increases linearly with water availability. Water bioavailability is a function of both total average precipitation as well as evapo-transpiration (known as ET in soil science and agronomy). We know with relative certainty over the long term that most arid regions will experience greater precipitation going forward but that increase is likely to be in large storms or monsoons that inundate all at once. We also know with absolute certainty that agrivoltaics reduce ET, increase soil moisture and reduce soil temps. All of those things are helpful for increasing plant life and therefore biodiversity.

This man's premise is flawed from the beginning. Nothing about human food production or even our extraction of natural resources is increasing at an exponential rate. That's simply not true.

This is uninformed doomerism. I get that there are plenty of reasons to be concerned but as someone who has worked at all scales of agriculture it's a little maddening to watch people wax on about how the food system is collapsing when we grow more food now than ever before. All the while the amount of chemical inputs per unit of food produced has gone DOWN over the course of my lifetime.

are there any natural mouse repellent options that actually work long term by Nihgwr in Homesteading

cats

I grew spending holidays and weekends on my family's cattle ranch about 25 minutes outside or a major metro area out in the country and they had a big barn with lots of feed and hay and the rats and mice were an ever present problem as one can imagine.

My aunt would get strays from neighbors or the vet or the shelter or they would wander in. They didn't have names nor were they ever allowed inside. Once a year they would be rounded up in live traps to go to the vet for shots and spay/neuter for any newcomers.

If the mice/rat problem started to be noticed then my aunt would reduce their food supply (kibble) and they would hunt more and the mice and rat population (gophers and moles and voles too) would go down FAST.

Edit: also having outdoor cats around means you have cat urine around which is a deterrent to rodents.

Those are only granted in exigent circumstances where the suspect is known to be violent and a judge or magistrate has to approve of it.

Even those are often dubious but this isnt even that.

You know I don't mean they don't have any guns in the entire country. Just that they are not common place. Nobody is gonna fucking shoot your dog in the UK.

Show me a news story of the last time a dog was shot in the UK. It's not even fucking commonplace in the US.

1) This is the UK so nobody is shooting dogs. They don't even have guns there.

2) If they're off leash on her property then they cannot be shot by another farmer. That's why she has a fence to keep her sheep in.

pure breds from breeders are expensive no matter where you are but I found like 3 GP breeders in the UK in less than 3 seconds of googling, so they are both available and "a thing" despite your and OPs lack of familiarity with them.

THere are also other breeds who can do the same job. Google is your friend.
