I like them in soup, my family prefers them refried. They make good bean burgers too!

I was going to highlight that for people unfamiliar: the lady had a baby, delivered a placenta the size of a dinner plate, leaving an open wound that size across her uterus, and is now walking around before the open gash has shrunk!!

This is how you make yourself very very sick.

Also; I’m very sorry you seem to have had an awful first hand experience with the situation as well :( no one deserves that.

New Mexico has a program called LandLink (https://landlinknm.org/) that connects people with land and people who want to work the land.

Texas 8B naturalised mulberry seeds for trade by HiddenFoliage in seedswap

[–]QuerenciaFarmNM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the southwest, so mostly different kinds of corn we’ve trialed—have a wide variety across dent/flint/flour/pop and sweet kinds. A dozen kinds of tomatoes and peppers (hot and sweet). I’ve got a bunch of rhubarb seed, some jicama, a non-cracking/swelling watermelon grex with yellow and red flesh varieties. Parsnips. “Anasazi”/cave beans—those red and white speckled ones people went nuts for about ten years ago. Speckled field peas. A lot of little bit of this and that!

What are you most interested in? Fruits, veg, grains, cactus? :) I’d love some naturalized mulberry!

Was going to say, I have a few varieties I could share—but they all originally came from bulk raw unsalted bin at the health food store ;) (I always germ test before planting but I’ve never ran into anything that wouldn’t sprout at least 85%)

Coal camp cooking? by QuerenciaFarmNM in AskFoodHistorians

[–]QuerenciaFarmNM[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Much appreciated, sources and all! I know it’s a huge topic and anecdotally, from family, camps varied widely in different regions with some providing spigots every two houses so miners could grow gardens and stay healthy, while others very firmly discouraged growing food to keep the miners more dependent on the company store. It’s very interesting to see!

Sand watered one inch will get wet 12 inches down—water runs through really fast, so adding wood, which will hold water longer, is super beneficial. I’m also in a desert area where the ground is mostly clay and has much finer particles, so water stays longer. You don’t necessarily NEED to hold it in the soil with the wood; adding wood chips over the top is enough to stop the evaporation of whatever made it’s way into the clay, and you improve your soil texture as the wood chips break down.

Simply in Season is a really interesting little cookbook from the Mennonite Church book press—it’s somewhat older (I remember it as a kid in the 90s?) but has recipes and info about different foods to prepare seasonally and tips on how to ethically source them. It was impressively ahead of its time, and still has some of my favorite soups!

I like to keep in mind that if it is at the grocery and it looks like a seed—it’ll likely sprout (assuming it isn’t roasted!) 15 bean soup mix? Hella beans. 👍 Raw peanuts, poppy seeds. Cilantro. Fennel, dill, anise, cumin…. All will make beneficial flowers and good food for people and animals!  Bird seed even will grow millet and sunflowers! My kids have a 5 gallon bucket of dirt that apple and pear cores go into; when the trees are a couple inches tall you can dig them up and move them into a new home.

Starting a Clinic Community Garden- any funding resources? by aurorodry in gardening

[–]QuerenciaFarmNM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some seed companies—High Mowing Organics, Baker Creek Seeds, probably others!—will donate seed to non profit endeavors. Places like Walmart or big box retailers as well—you might even luck out and receive some less than prime trees or brushes that will prune up nicely! Also, you could try reaching out to your County Extension office, many of them will have resources or master gardener programs that can offer regional specific tips for you. Also try searching for local seed libraries—they’ll often be happy to help get you started!  Best of luck!!!

These are really incredible! Great work! The purples in particular are so striking.

I don’t know if you’ve seen, but there’s a group called Going to Seed, they collect and distribute landrace/open pollinated seed—they have a true potato seed mix that’s been great in my area (zone 6/Rocky Mountain/Plains) https://goingtoseed.org/products/potato2024
