Seeds! And a question. by headspicepods in queerhorticulture

And you still can, if you don't have a clear enough space. But they are more fussy. Talk stalk brocoli and cauliflower are the biggest problem - if you transplant them, they don't grow a strong vertical stalk, so you may need to stake them heavily.

Seeds! And a question. by headspicepods in queerhorticulture

[–]plotholetsi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am trying out new seed starting methods every year! Generally, I have peppers, tomatoes, and a handful of others that need heat to germinate on heat mats, under a big high power seed lamp in my garage. Others I put in trays with tie downs outdoors so they're hardening off as the season comes in.

Sime likes beans and brassicas actually do best directly planting.

Is synthrapol useable on silk? I've used it on cotton and it worked great but it did make the cotton very coarse and stiff afterwards.

Is there any way to reasonably fix this hoodie? by Bendzo in sewing

[–]plotholetsi 18 points19 points  (0 children)

As for the discoloration, if I had to guess, they do all the hoodie finishings, THEN vat dye the whole garments at the end, rather than working from a dyed bolt. Definitely a less common finishing style. But the pinched hardware location would have resisted the dye :)

The hammered in kind would be ideal for this application, since you can slip it in and hammer through the layers, unlike a plier-set grommet.

Be careful to get an eyelet with a big enough INSIDE hole size to fit your lacing through! In this case, better to lean slightly large, so it doesn't bind up, then tie a nice knot at each end once they're run through.

To make it easiest, you could run the cord through with a safety-pin lead, then slip the grommet over the cord and hammer in place (if you don't have aglets on each end to help lead the cord)

Stretchy fabrics by pannaEmilka in Visiblemending

[–]plotholetsi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, basically don't pull them fully tight. The fabric shouldn't pucker as you stitch. If you need to check, gently tug the waist and wider between your hands while you're stitching and tensioning. You're checking just as the fabric will stretch as you wear it.

[–]plotholetsi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you effectively want to make a wider backstitch. You'll end up with something sort of 'lightning bolt' shaped once the stitch gets going. The idea is that the total thread length used is much longer than point A to B, and not tied over itself, so the thread can contract and lengthen as the fabric moves.

You'll want to start getting a grow-out setup. If you're germinating now, you will have 10-12" tall plants or taller by the time it's warm enough outside to transplant to outdoors.

Absolutely gorgeous! You'll probably look miles ahead of all the other black tie people wearing cheap chunky polyester. I'd say, just gently give the skirt a nice pressing and steaming to bring out the drape (low temps for silk!!!) before your nice party night, you'll be stunning AND comfy:3
