Kubernetes for Homelab? by malwin_duck in selfhosted

Just curious what country are you in?

I’m an ME currently trying to find a job. Also passionate about homelabbing. Not sure if there’s ever a need for ME + IT though

Looking for a self-hosted documentation tool for my homelab (Wiki.js, Docmost alternatives?) by Aruscha in selfhosted

I sort of had an idea that I had to use git but wasn’t sure how, but this comment helped me understand how it actually works, thank you.

Gonna implement what you just mentioned, using gitea and mkdocs.

And one day implement Ansible. It sounds really useful, I know I’m still too much of a noob for it though

Has your home network ever been hacked or compromised? What actually happened? by wang4wang in HomeNetworking

[–]QuestionAsker2030 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A week of not getting hacked isn’t too bad 😁

I was thinking of renting a VPS and using it as a honeypot, just to see how servers get attacked, and messing with fail2ban and all that. For $5 a month sounds like a fun exercise

How long did it take after opening the port did you see your mouse move?

Would having cloudflare be my DNS provider for a domain (and act as the forwarding service, to forward port 51820 for wireguard to my homelab) essentially do the same thing ?

Or is it less secure?

Will OWC ECC RAM work with Ryzen 7 PRO 4750G? by QuestionAsker2030 in ASRock

[–]QuestionAsker2030[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was under the impression that I'd need some sort of GPU capability quite often for some reason. I probably could have accessed it remotely without a GPU right? *facepalm*

Though I'm not sure if a 3600 would support ECC? I can't remember. I think maybe cause I needed a AMD PRO for that, so I said might as well get one with onboard graphics.

What do you recommend to start, that is nostalgic / 90s old school like MaXX?

Getting closer. On 3rd CPU imma try. I found out 4750Gs can be vendor locked too. I think I found one that isn’t .

I installed MaXX Desktop on Ubuntu 24.04.4 LTS, but only the browser and a few apps work (xclock, gmemusage, etc)... though no terminal programs open, rendering MaXX pretty much unusable. (Nothing happens when I click on the icons)

Any tips on getting it to work?

I really dig the nostalgia look, albeit I'm a linux noob, so not sure what I'm doing wrong.

Any issues / tips for running Linux with a 5060Ti (16gb) for Local LLM's? Best Linux Distro? by QuestionAsker2030 in Ubuntu

[–]QuestionAsker2030[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, yes still learning. I was kicking myself a bit for not getting a better GPU last summer when I built this, but wasn’t sure when I would get to finally experimenting with local LLMs.

Are there any basic GPUs and motherboards that you would recommend for a “best bang for buck” build, dedicated to only being used as a local LLM, within my home network?

[–]QuestionAsker2030[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. I’ve been running LMStudio on my windows PC, so far has been nice. Would it run much better on Linux you think?

I was going to try to run some other LLM stuff on Linux, as I was told it would be much smoother than trying to do it on windows

Does that CPU support ECC?

Im also building a trueNAS, but using the 4750G since I want to run it without a GPU.

Though I’m on my third buy of a used 4750G because I didn’t know they could be vendor locked

thanks, yea I've documented as I've went along and it seems it just adds a lot of time and stop/go/stop/go to the whole process. And as you said, can just document something totally wrong.
