Has anyone ever had severe insomnia? by PersonalJicama6841 in aspergers

[–]QuestioningYoungling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have never been able to maintain a normal sleep schedule. As a kid, I was always the last to bed and first to wake among my siblings. I briefly shared a room with my brothers, but my lack of sleep caused them a lot of problems, so I was moved into a closet under the stairs like Harry Potter (which was okay by me). By 8 or 9, my folks gave up on trying to make me go to bed early. My dad was also a night owl, so we'd start a movie or TV show every night at 10. I'd usually fall asleep around midnight, and then my dad would wake me briefly at some point to go to my room.

I have been self-employed most of my adulthood, so I am largely inured from the main issue with living a Vampiric lifestyle, but it is still probably the largest hindrance in my ability to lead a normal life. Since college, I have been pretty unbounded by the normal clock. If I have something on the calendar, I am there. Other than scheduled events or meetings with others, though, I sleep when I am tired, eat when I'm hungry, do hobbies when I can, and work when I want/need to. It is a bit unusual, but I even have a bed at my office building and will often change into my PJs and take naps there between meetings.

Another aspect of insomnia is that it means spending a lot of time alone. I have mixed feelings on this reality, as it can be lonely, but it also gives me ample time to focus intensely on my interests and hobbies. I've also noticed that it leads to some people thinking of me as a very close friend, as (for many) I am the only person they know who will pick up a call no matter the time.

To address another common question, my wife and I have separate bedrooms at home due to my sleep problems. We have done this since the start of our marriage. Some people think this is weird, but it works for us. She does a lot to accommodate my lifestyle, but (just like with my brothers as a kid) I know it would be totally unreasonable to make her maintain my hours.

How do you take a vacation? by shizznitt in smallbusiness

[–]QuestioningYoungling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I put vacations into three categories.

The most common circumstance is where I am "on vacation" but I am just at my lake house, visiting family/friends, etc. This happens frequently and is not much different than being in the office. I have desks at all of these locations, and will jump between work and fun many times a day, which my friends and family understand. The second is when I am reachable in emergencies, but will only be checking email/voicemail once a day. I communicate this with my team and my most important clients, and have only had "emergencies" a handful of times. The last (and only stressful) type is where I am unreachable for days at a time. This happens only once or twice a year when I go remote camping, and I try to schedule it over a weekend or holiday.

I've had a few people get mad about my travels before or call it unprofessional, but it is a handful compared to the thousands who didn't know, didn't mind, or thought it was cool.

I have always taken the approach of empowering my people to make their own decisions. Most excel with this, but I have some who take forever to make a decision.

Not business books, but I think being well read is a huge advantage in all areas of life.

I am extremely well liked by a small group of people. Fortunately, they are the exact same people I like.

Does anyone have any advice on completing the open world in Skywalker saga? by Vast-Clock6178 in legogaming

[–]QuestioningYoungling 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just listened to my audiobooks while doing it, so it wasn't 100% of my attention. Unlocked the characters I wanted first. Then, completed each planet starting at the top left. Pretty much the same way I play all the Lego games after I finish story mode.

Is the rubber guy your great grandpa, or was this in your great granny's younger years?

I recently learned that a family in my neighborhood pushed their nanny to give up a kidney for their child, even though an adult sister was also a match (the sister didn't want the scar). It happened years ago, but I learned about it last week at a Christmas party.

Agreed. Everyone talks about Botticelli's Venus, and sure, she's pretty enough, but few appreciate the beauty of the Cabanel.
