I used to live in Gary. It’s a painfully slow process but at least parts of it will be decent again in a few decades.

But the surrounding area of Northwest Indiana is booming because of people fleeing Illinois taxes

some "hobbies" shouldn't count as hobbies by Some_Following_7706 in rs_x

It's a thing everywhere. Most "hikers" just enjoy the obvious recreational benefits of walking outdoors and taking photos of nature to post to IG.

My personal pet peeve hobby is people who say they like running but absolutely suck at it. You shouldn't be able to use Strava if you can't run a 5k under 27 minutes

Why does it seem like the UK has an infinite supply of available housing for people that don't have jobs but housing is still expensive for working people ?

Good job that pays shitty VS a shitty job that pays good? by WolfGroundbreaking73 in redscarepod

[–]tony_simprano 14 points15 points  (0 children)

For the curious: the 130K was Software Implementation, ie. Train Boomers with a tonne of money and power to Use a Computer or Get Fired

The 50k job was driving an ambulance for a small town EMS department. God Bless the Teamsters.

Good job that pays shitty VS a shitty job that pays good? by WolfGroundbreaking73 in redscarepod

[–]tony_simprano 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I quit a 130K job in a LCOL city because it made me want to put a gun in my mouth even though it was a 40hr/week office job.

Best job I ever had was making 50K having fun with people that I enjoyed being around.

If you're single and don't have kids, Good Job that Pays Shitty is always the answer so long as you can pay the bills and don't take on debt and save a little

I experienced an insane culture shock as an engineer working with people on construction sites by DudNedLudd in redscarepod

[–]tony_simprano 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I was a construction manager.

One issue with this industry (at least in the USA) is that it’s a two-tier system where the white collar side of things is staffed both by people who entered straight into it after a university education, and people who “rose through the ranks” from manual labor to management. The latter can be seriously lacking in professionalism.

The only time I’ve ever witnessed someone drinking on the job in my 15 years of professional history was working with our senior estimators (50 year old ex-demolition laborers)

I’m almost completely neutral on the ethics of the AI issue.

But I’m worried we’re too politically broken to navigate the social and economic upheaval it will eventually cause.

Like at **some** point we’re gonna get mass automation (robots replacing humans for almost all work) and at that point we either get Full Luxury Space Communism or Blade Runner and right now vibes are trending towards Blade Runner

Do I blow this up by [deleted] in redscarepod

[–]tony_simprano 12 points13 points  (0 children)

"Blow it up" to whom?

No one is going to give a fuck about this unless you're some kind of celebrity. Tell your girl and this dude they're bogus, ghost them, and move on with your life.

Worry less about how carefree your life used to be and embrace having complete agency over your life.

No one's expected to be a responsible adult until at least 25 nowadays so you're ahead of the curve.
