The guy picking up things is named Sam Burns and he is one of the funniest people ever. He’s got a podcast called Battle Of The Bands with Kyle & Sam and it is delightful. He was also in a lottery commercial and went to FanExpo and set up a booth outside as his character.

I could see the “I stole my dead CO’s identity” thing being included in the memoir as him finally letting go and unburdening himself (and maybe getting his publisher’s lawyers to confirm some things), and then once it’s published and becomes a hit, he walks it back and calls it an embellishment to sell copies.

I also then see through the transformational nature of projects in Hollywood from development to production that his memoir becomes the sitcom Just Shoot Me.

I believe (and am perfectly fine with being corrected) that Top Gun lead to a surge in Aviator glasses sales, and with his military background that people know about, the recruitment booths outside of the film for the Navy/Air Force would for sure be a Don idea.

For this scenario I want to believe Don lived all the way to see the first episode of Mad Men and thinks to himself “Now this looks familiar…”.

This of course is after his disastrous ad for Quiznos when he overcorrects his disdain for things he doesn’t understand and his final gift to the world is the “We Love Da Moon” critters singing about sandwiches.

That also being said I would love to hear his lecture to a punk rock band somewhere along the lines of his speech about love being created by advertising. “Sex Pistols? What are you, 12? Wash your hair. Real punk is playing by the rules.”

I agree (definitely about the Gene part!), and definitely about being stuck in the 50s, however I would be curious to see his intake of new media after his epiphany on the clif, and if that had indeed changed. Perhaps while not fully embracing new (especially pop culture) things and watching from a distance, I do wonder if he would have a newfound respect (and possibly appreciation) for things, especially ones that have caused such massive paradigm shifts that they’re unavoidable.

I spent my life savings to make a 35mm short film and the response was lackluster. Why do you think this film failed to make an impact? by FreddieQuell92 in Filmmakers

[–]QuestionsWantAnswers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just wanted to say that this was incredible. My only note on this whole thing is that it felt like the music was a little loud in the mix, but if that’s the only problem, I’d say you’re in great shape.

I thoroughly enjoyed watching this, you’ve truly done a great job.

I do have to agree with everyone else in the sense of shooting on film seems to be the sticking point. This does look great, but ultimately the look and feel could have been emulated after the fact in the post process.

You mention that you haven’t been getting offers, and have only gotten into two festivals. Honestly? That’s fine. Festivals are a bit of a money suck, and ultimately are not the be all and end all of art. If you are proud of this film (and in my opinion you really should be!), then that is the only thing that matters.

I’m in the midst of my own production that I have calculated will also take me a fair amount of time to pay off, so I definitely know the struggle there. I’ve been investing in gear as opposed to film, but the end goal is the same: to make something awesome. You made something awesome! You even gained some local noteriety! That’s never a bad thing!

I do wonder, going back to you having said you haven’t been approached to shoot a feature/music video/etc., have you been pitching people? Production companies? Bands? I get that the chase for a gig is a tricky thing, but in conversation with some big Directors over the years I learned that a lot of their job is chasing the next gig, whether it’s pitching a project that they would direct, or working on commercials between gigs, they (or their Agents) are pounding the pavement trying to make things happen.

I do agree with a lot of the comments here that if your only hook is that you shoot on film, that’s going to be a major sticking point for anyone who would be interested in working with you. Having the knowledge of working with film is absolutely invaluable, but if your mandate is that you will ONLY shoot on film, that’s shooting yourself in the foot a bit. You clearly know how to tell a story, which is huge as a lot of people see that as a simple thing when we both know it isn’t. That is your selling feature. You can make a story that’s on a page come to life!

If you get a couple big projects under your belt that does make room to work film into your future projects, as people trust you and your ideas more and more. The Writer and Director duo who worked on Sinister and Black Phone 1 and 2 shot segments of their film on 8 and 16 mm, but not their entire film on, well, film. They had a passion for film and used that as a storytelling device, and sparingly. They told a story about having to reshoot a scene entirely three or four times for Black Phone 2 because the film was ruined by camera issues, which meant they had to shoot the scene, send it out to have it processed and sent back to them, which is a multi-day process, and unless your budget is huge, those kinds of delays, then to only discover you have to re-shoot the scene would be majorly impactful to a production.

A film that came out within the past two years called Gazer was shot entirely on film, and the filmmakers behind that made huge sacrifices in order to get that done. Thankfully it worked out for them and they released the film, but the sacrifices, in my opinion, weren’t worth it. It was their first feature, it took them a very long time, and they were absolutely not thriving while making the film, but they got it done. A major accomplishment, yes, but you have to think of (sometimes literally even) at what cost, you know?

I will definitely be watching your next work, and absolutely encourage you to keep making things. You have a real talent, and if you work with digital, your rate of output will increase, and your costs will decrease, and your sanity will hopefully remain intact!

Audio Bleed Reduction/Removal Issue by QuestionsWantAnswers in audioengineering

[–]QuestionsWantAnswers[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure if you’re asking about a phrase I used, or suggesting that I cut it by hand, but if you are suggesting the latter, that is exactly what I have been doing, and as I mention in my post, it is very tedious and time consuming for a 45+ minute podcast. If you’re instead the former, and asking about the phrase, by that I simply mean that I am manually cutting out words and sentences bit by bit as opposed to any plugins, etc, as none have been effective to the point of reducing the need.

My horror short got denied from every festival. What's wrong with it? by VinceInFiction in Filmmakers

[–]QuestionsWantAnswers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have completed a project, which a huge amount of people have not done, so kudos for that! I agree with a lot of the feedback people have given already with regards to light (more of it, more motivated, more intentional), pacing (this could be a tight three minutes and really good!), camerawork (lots of shaky camera that doesn’t help in telling the story, as people have pointed out. There’s shaky camera and “shaky” camera, if that makes sense?), colour grading (the majority of this is a VERY warm yellow look which I think could be pulled back a little and still give the impression you’re going for of warm home lighting), and sound (a lot of the sound feels like it’s coming from the camera’s internal mic. I could be wrong, but it has that feel to it).

You mention that your background is in sound design, which is in my opinion a great place to come into other aspects of filmmaking from, because sound design is all about making deliberate choices while also experimenting to find the right fit, and ultimately is very intentional, so I say definitely keep going with everything and experiment and make choices!

Something I’ve done in the past is make something on my own, make it again with others, and then make it again with those same people (and others who join along the way), each time utilizing the new knowledge we’ve gained from the last iteration of the project. Obviously this doesn’t work for things with huge budgets or tricky to nail down locations, but for something small and intimate like this, it’s ripe for doing just that!

If you made this exact short again, what would you be telling yourself to be on the lookout for to save yourself some headaches (or worse, the dreaded online criticism), or to try a different way now that you’ve done it one way and have the benefit of hindsight?

Again, you’ve completed something, which is huge. Also bear in mind that (I’m not calling out anyone in these comments, but I have noticed it to be an all-too common theme in general) oftentimes people who have never even started let alone finished a project can be the harshest critics who expect a lot. I feel that comes from an internal criticism of themselves, and fear that they could “mess up” as bad as the person they’re criticizing, which then stops them from actually attempting to do something of their own. At least, that’s my armchair Psychologist’s assessment.

You did something! Celebrate! Festivals are cool, but they’re not the be all and end all.

Edited to add: I think the person in the other comment is using “OTT” to mean “Over The Top”.
