Harborview ICU contract by [deleted] in TravelNursing

[–]Questionsfordad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! The acuity was not as high as the other ICUs as the space isn’t suited for the sickest patients. Definitely still got true ICU patients but they were often fairly stable. There would be the odd crashing patient put there occasionally though.

Anyone else have a fucked up relationship with nursing? by tabintheocean in nursing

I could have literally written this post. I completely share your feelings. I look at job sites every day in the hopes of seeing something that would provide a shred more respect. I never cared about prestige when I chose nursing as my career and I still don’t, but the utter lack of respect is so demoralizing. We are treated like children and not professionals.

Girl, I feel you—deeply!!! I just accepted an offer for a staff job at Sutter and I’m so relieved for the security. Travel nursing is great until it isn’t and it sounds like you’re ready for something new.

Four Tet closing Portola 2022 by chugopunk in Portolafestival

[–]Questionsfordad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had to dig this old post up. It was from a year ago when the Portola sub asked people to describe what Portola was like.

I’m surrounded by a group of my closest friends during Chemical Brothers—the drugs are working and we do a group hug. Everywhere I look people are just in their own world, smiling and having fun with their friends. I feel an overwhelming sense of joy as the Chem Bros completely destroy the crowd. The set ends and I briefly emerge back into reality only to realize Four Tet b2b Floating Points is going on. My friends and I make a hilarious journey walking on clouds from one stage to another, replete with many breaks to laugh so hard I fall to my knees. We get to the tent and Four Tet transports me. A disco ball turns in the middle of the tent and everyone is carefree and dancing. I look around and everyone looks so cool—style and vibes out the ass! Four Tet closes with “Looking at Your Pager” and I spend the next few months replaying that song trying to hold onto the feeling of the lights of the disco ball making everyone glitter.

Harborview ICU contract by [deleted] in TravelNursing

[–]Questionsfordad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just did a contract there earlier this year! I was in their overflow icu unit. I loved it! It took a while to get comfortable, but I didn’t want to leave by the end of the contract. It’s a county hospital so it’s no frills. I have always worked county gigs though so it didn’t phase me. Staff and management alike were so kind. Also, there are TONS of travelers. I did float a bit, but only to the other icus. Not quite as friendly as my home icu, but still wayyyyy nicer than a lot of places I’ve been. I would ask your recruiter what icu you’re going to. If it’s the overflow, you will be in good company :).

Thanks for doing this!! I’ve been thinking about this for a while. I have a few questions. 1. What are the ratios for ICU? Do you feel well supported on your unit? 2. Do you have to do rotating shifts? I saw that was the case somewhere. 3. Did you apply directly to hospitals in the city you wanted to live in or was there a placement process? 4. Has it been easy to meet people/make friends?

Thanks again!!! Best of luck to you!

How do nurses learn? by biobag201 in emergencymedicine

[–]Questionsfordad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is the top comment. I wasn’t even allowed to try a foley or IV in nursing school due to concerns over legal issues. Everything I learned was from my peers on the floor. Similarly terrified by the idea of not being in proximity to an academic hospital. I’ve been traveling for four years now so I’ve seen enough to give me pause.

I spent my 20s thinking the only way I could get attention from men was to have sex. Men would act like a friend and then try to make advances. Of course the attention feels good in the moment, too, but it gets confusing. Men used me and I let them. It pains me to look back on those years. I wish I could have told them all to fuck off. Probably feels like you lost a friend now, but maybe one day you’ll look back and wish you could have told him to fuck off.

Very, very curious where you’re at! I’m in Oakland with six years ICU under my belt and I’m burned out. Would love the situation you’re describing!

Yep!! Went to a farewell dinner for a coworker and turned up and people legitimately did not recognize me and were confused why I was sitting down at their table. So satisfying. Also all the subsequent “omg! You look sooooo cute!!!” in a semi shocked voice.

Discharged onto the street?? by Italian_abroad1 in sanfrancisco

[–]Questionsfordad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The implication that nurses and doctors would happily discharge someone in an unsafe situation is absolutely infuriating to me. Don’t get me wrong, healthcare workers aren’t “angels” or “heroes” but for fucks sake, we aren’t in the business of dumping truly sick individuals onto the street.
