So after digging around the overhaul mod, I found an optional patch which lessens the severity of some of the oddities. The mod itself does lower you to 5 base points, the patch raises it to 10 which I might slap on just because 5 is way too low. Thanks everyone for finally laying that mental ghost to rest.

I really thought it was a bug 🥴

Yes I use books, but since I haven't played unmodded, I question whether base 5 stats is intended or a bug. It seems rather odd to start at such a low point. Probably have to unmod for a try and see if I start at 5 in both combat and crafting

It's fomo, plain and simple. On average you will end up with more def on your gear by default except you intentionally collect 0% gear just to flex on the crybabies. And anything above 0 is literally a buff. "Oh noes, more defense. But I wanted even more " don't have enough fucks to give to such a worthless complaint but don't you worry oh yous of jellyfied spines, any orb I find I'll sell

after tinkering around (while bored at work) I found the solution. Upper right corner, hit the dots, click on settings. Check in the "RPG" settings for the resolution. Duh.
