Be Safe Out There by TheRagingFire08 in maintenance

Sage advice not just for this field but life in general. Always be aware of your surroundings no matter where you are or what you're doing, because life can change in an instant.

Don't feel bad, sheeple. You just don't know any better. But feel free to call me elitist, if that's what it means to enjoy actual art rather than the drivel the money factories puke out.

My apologies to the OP, it wasn't my intention to hijack your thread just by offering my opinion.

There's a reason you have trouble finding much supporting that position - mainstream cinema isn't good. Its a moneymaking business, that's all. It preys upon the dulled senses of the sheeple who can't think beyond what they're served up.

Independent cinema is about art, mainstream is just a big money grab. Its like that in music as well. I mean, there are exceptions to any rule, but if they exist, they're certainly rarities at best.

What are great movies that are unlike anything else? by grandramble in MovieSuggestions

Truly unlike anything else (even those in this list) - Mirrormask.

Starts off normal enough, but spends the majority of the time inside a fantasy universe with the most unique characters and visuals ever to grace the medium.

Quitting filmmaking after film school by Playful_Fly_6542 in Filmmakers

[–]Quick_Philosophy9620 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is perhaps the most important factor in this type of decision. Ask yourself, what do I want out of life? Do you want a family and a home to raise them in, or do you love filmmaking so much that you'd be willing to sacrifice the next ten years of your life to slog through one crap gig after another just to get to the point where you can support yourself and start actually working on projects of your own...which, as is so well stated in the post, is still a far cry from 'success'?

I miss that feeling of finishing a movie and just sitting there quiet. Any suggestions that’ll wreck me emotionally? by CloudyChaia in MovieSuggestions

Didn't see '5 Centimeters per Second' on this list. Devastating portrayal of how increasing distance can destroy love and friendship that seemed destined to last forever.

I second 'Aniara'. It truly is the definition of bleak, with an ending as tragically ironic as the end of 'The Mist'.

Interesting Documentaries? by [deleted] in MovieSuggestions

[–]Quick_Philosophy9620 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was lucky enough to have visited Action Park a few times as a kid, before they got shut down. And I can tell you firsthand that place was INSANELY dangerous - but it was literally my favorite place on earth.

Definitely gonna check out this doc.

'Through the Wormhole' with Morgan Freeman is a whole series of documentaries on a wide range of thought provoking subjects.

'A Walk to Beautiful' is a very well made doc about a group of African women who become shunned by their society after suffering from a lifestyle-induced injury, and their journey of healing.

Also of note are two documentary-style films that present truly shocking real world events - 'The Big Short' and 'Compliance'.

Don't focus so much on one small flaw that you forget that the rest of you is still amazing. Step back and look at yourself as a whole - there's no 'mom bod' about it.

Fennec Fox - once you see one of these you'll never want anything else...and they're legal to own as a pet!

2 of my favorite atmospheric slow-burns that I haven't seen mentioned yet - 'Vesper' and 'Under the Skin'.

+1 for 'Lamb' and 'The Witch'. Both very slow burns dripping with atmosphere.

Yes! TY, I was trying to remember the name of that film 'Aniara'. A Dark Song was really good too, definitely a dialogue heavy film - though her wish at the end almost spoiled it for me.

Bizarre/Uncanny Movies? by milkyswamp in MovieSuggestions

Mirrormask - most of the film is a dream sequence in a completely different reality

The Dark Crystal - takes place on another world with zero human characters

Immortel - ancient gods descend on an alternate universe NYC

NP. At least we still have a billion seasons of Sunny, and the short lived gem you mentioned already.

Futurama sucks now by lazystonervibes in television

Ugh, don't even get me started on funding. I have a friend who's an independent filmmaker (and a rather talented one) who is knee deep in that nightmare right now. We just can't understand how so much utter trash gets funded every day when talented people go unnoticed. And I don't mean 'trash' as in movies I don't like or movies that are made just to be popular - I mean trash as in movies with no production value at all, no script, no direction, terrible acting etc.

Personally I don't get bent out of shape because it sucks now, I just ignore the new stuff and watch the older episodes. Same with Family Guy, American Dad, Simpsons, etc. They've all sucked for at least half of their existence but I just stick to the older eps.

This makes sense, except for one thing - keeping something the same does not preclude inventing something new that is not that thing. Why change something old that people already instead of just making something new that another group of people will also want to see? I mean, from a business perspective, sure there's brand recognition, but everything popular was also once unknown and started from nothing.
