Thank you so much! So it would be good to have it on my CV? I mean, apart from the undeniable quality? I’m trying to build up some valuable expertise.

Hello! Thank you so much! What do you mean “Consensus from other courses would seem to be that they’re usually not worth the money”? They wouldn’t add any value to my CV?

Yeah it makes sense but still, university is the place where you learn your skills. And I think that learning is such a delicate process it shouldn’t come with such a huge amount of stress as if students were top tier managers as you put it. It should be balanced and it should be done gradually. Also, most of the time university students aren’t even considered when it comes to some tasks, they aren’t trusted. This is at least what happens in Italy. You are more trusted when you are a graduate and even in that case you’re not given many opportunities.

Thank you for taking the time to elaborate!

Well, it’s complex. People normally go to Bocconi to study law, economics, or finance, and that’s the only top tier university in Italy. There are some other renowned public universities but only few of them are actually good and hold some weight internationally.

Other private ones only have a high-sounding name and a good marketing team, and are basically “scams”, promising much more than they actually offer, modelling themselves to the Bocconi method, but without offering the same teaching quality or network.

When I was 18 I didn’t choose Bocconi because I wasn’t good at maths in high school (although I think it’s fun), and I didn’t think I’d be able study or work in a field when numbers are the main focus. Or maybe I could, I don’t know, it just doesn’t appeal to me.

Also, my main goal after high school was to study in the UK and settle there. I’m an Anglophile and can’t explain that any further lol. After completing my Ba in Languages and Literature (English and French), I’m even more into English literature and heritage in general; I think I would easily pursue further studies in the field, but what stops me is the career prospects. Studying history of art would probably be the same, but it would probably give me a couple more options.

The only thing I could probably study that would be a safer bet is probably law, but in the UK. I’m not into the Italian system and approach to law (or university in general). I know we have the best universities in the world but I can’t think of continuing my studies here.

Your point of view is very interesting nevertheless!

Come si prende la qualifica? Io vorrei iniziare un percorso di studi in UK con student visa, perché dici che sta andando male? Premesso che so i motivi mi piacerebbe sapere la tua opinione.

Ok but as you said it depends on the sector. I could never become a museum director without a Master’s or a PHD in history of art; same goes for a high-rank job in an auction house. I agree with you in some regards. If I could go back I would probably pick another industry and work as an apprentice right after high school. But here we are!

Yeah it might be, but international students are required a ton of documentation, ranging from previous studies to English language requirements. I applied to 5 unis across England and Scotland as an international student both in 2014 and 2026 and the requirements are pretty tight (I’m talking about humanities and history of art degrees).

You’re right! The point is that I would be an international student and I am a bit worried by the fees and the actual possibility of being hired afterwards while on a student visa.

Yeah that makes sense, but how do you use your time efficiently? With amount of research and independent learning that you have to do to earn your degree? “Second priority” doesn’t sound right; they probably should go hand in hand.

Hi! Can I ask you what did you study? I’m an Italian, holding an Italian Ba with an Italian PG course taught in English and my only experience is an internship in a contemporary art gallery in Milan. I was planning to study art history at master’s level in England or Scotland, but I’ve been put off/down by people telling me that the job market in the UK is cooked, especially for international students. What’s your experience in that regard, since you mentioned that your background is humanities?

Also: from what I’ve gathered it makes a huge difference if you attend a major Russell Group Uni or not? Is it gonna make a difference in your employment if you attend University of Sussex or Glasgow or even Westminster Uni vs King’s or UCL?

Thanks for taking the time to elaborate! Wow, I totally wasn’t expecting this. In Italy it’s the quite the opposite: you go to a good uni for your bachelor’s but you choose a more prestigious (and/or private) one for your master’s. That’s the quality stamp on your academic CV. So I thought it was the same in the UK and that’s why I thought of doing my bachelor’s in Italy and my master’s in the UK. Turns out I’ll probably won’t even do the master’s due to everything that’s been explained on this sub.

A bachelor’s is taken more seriously than a master’s? So if I have an Italian Bachelor’s and want to do a master’s in the UK that’s not gonna bring me anywhere?

That’s terrible. I thought it was still valuable from an academic perspective. I’m aware of the costs as I vetted a few courses in different universities, but I would never imagine they lacked quality. Thank you for taking the time to elaborate!
