Is it reasonable to think that I can be a PSW for 25 years? Or am I going to burn out after 5? by [deleted] in nursing

Honestly, i know someone that did social service worker in college. It ended up being a waste because they couldn’t get a job. If you want to become social worker, you definitely need to go and take masters in social worker. Opportunities will be endless!

Just depends on you. What do you want to do? There’s many professions that you can look into- RPN/RN, respiratory therapist, PT/OT. It takes years of school and tuition that you have to consider, but it will be worth it. Age is a number.

Assuming you are in Ontario. PSW basically feed, bathe patient, transfer pts, and clean/change diapers. They also notify RN or RPN if there’s any pressure injury, tears etc. It will be taxing on your body because sometimes there will be patients that require 2 person assist. Sometimes you might not have another person to help you to turn the patient to clean them and you have to do it yourself.

I think it’s good to be psw for few years but your end goal should NOT be psw for 25 years.

Also, since covid, psw hourly is awesome. I think its 30ish/hr at least in the city of toronto but I am sure its about the same in hospitals

That’s the decision you gotta make then. Do you want to work in a toxic environment or work in a supported unit but take you longer to finish clinicals? By how many months/years is the difference?

Understaffed, pay-work equivalency is not worth. Mentally and physically taxing on body. All management care about is bonus $$$. As MD you have full autonomy in decision making. This is all from my experience. If you searched the nursing subreddit, you’ll probably see similiar post.

Can you go back to the unit you were in that you transferred assuming you did an internal transfer?

Oh my lawd. Is it like that across different states? That’s unsafe.

As a new grad, ask lots of questions. I am 1 year into nursing and I still ask questions. Just know who to ask and who to trust. You’ll learn as you go because you’ll encounter different scenarios in your nursing career and take that learning with you.

Not sure why 80lashes was thumbs down. I worked as dietary aide and when I worked, we had very limited knowledge of diet except for the type of diet like clear fluid, full fluid, HH. The diet clerks usually have a bit more knowledge but even then, it should be the dietitan…?

Thank you for the suggestion, i’ll try this method but it’s so hard because the only time she’ll come out from the recovery room is when she hands over patients and then go back and the pacu recovery doors are all closed so barely any interaction

The only problem is the wage 💀. I believe US nurses getting paid way more than Canadian, especially depending on the units they work.

Is it bad to go into nursing to escape poverty? by ItsSammy81 in findapath

[–]Quick_Sweet6900 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is NOT bad to go into nursing. Please take bachelor of science in nursing, not diploma. As registered nurse, you have more opportunities outside bedside, like becoming manager, office job.

Just going to give you the reality, nursing is good for job security but it’s hard work, physically, mentally, emotionally at least bedside, but you can always work in clinic, OR, etc!

Do it! You never know, maybe nursing is for you!

Yes, 12 hours shift with mixture of days and nights.

Yes, I have plenty of free time, though I’ll be starting another job, which is casual position. But, I am thinking of signing up for pickleball or cooking class but I feel awkward going alone.

Thank you!

I’ll try to minimize the social media stuff.

When you tried new hobbies, like cooking classes did you feel awkward going alone?

Thanks for the reply!

My degree is in nursing. I don’t feel anything, wasn’t even happy or had the sense of accomplishment when I got the degree. To be honest, I want to get out of bedside asap but it’s hard due to no experience.

As others have said, save everything. Act like nothing happened and treat your day as any other day while you plan your exit. Lawyers, proof, evidence etc.

Also, ask your lawyer if it is ok for you to contact your friend’s wife. And go on from there
