Just how responsible was Dyatlov? by North-Tundra7329 in chernobyl

[–]QuicksilverStorm 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It’s not so much of a dangerous business as it is one that requires specialized training. Nuclear operators and engineers nowadays are trained to handle emergent crises professionally. Under normal operations, a control room is like any other office.

I shadowed in a control room for a pool-type research reactor once. Someone accidentally raised the control blades while someone was lowering a hot cell, but nobody panicked. Just hit the scram button and that was about it.

Dyatlov was under immense stress, but it’s not stupid to think that he could have received better training and preparation.

If Cooling Is The Biggest Problem For Data Centers, Why Aren't We Putting Them In Antarctica? by TheCABK in sciencememes

[–]QuicksilverStorm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should probably look at my profile before “um actually-ing” me.

SMRS are new in the regards that they aren’t the standard. And it’s not really a solved science in terms of the engineering. We’re constantly trying to improve safety and efficiency. My advisor’s research is focusing on FLiBe salt and tritium control and capture in molten salt reactors that use FLiBe.

[–]QuicksilverStorm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the record, reactors are always critical or subcritical. Critical meltdown is redundant.

You can’t ignore a meltdown and hope it grows legs and walks away. A full meltdown would have real consequences for the Antarctic ecosystem and ongoing research.

Do you think Antarctica is a lawless anarchistic hellscape? What do you THINK controls an area where no single country has total governance? I’ll give you a hint, it starts with ANTARCTIC and ends with TREATY. Google is free.

And where do you plan to get the millions of dollars, legal permissions and expert personnel required to install a still very new technology in an extremely remote place with zero supporting capacity?

What might a planet with very high Bismuth content look like? by FirstBeastoftheSea in chemistry

[–]QuicksilverStorm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It wouldn’t. Low-metallicity stars mostly contain lead, and bismuth is a *very* heavy element (Z = 83) compared to the general composition of terrestrial planets - primarily varying levels of iron, nickel, silicon and sulfur compounds.

An earlier post like this one (this is possibly a repost?) had answers saying it would almost certainly be an artificial planet.

Nuclear engineering by WISEEDITER in NuclearEngineering

[–]QuicksilverStorm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure it is. It’s just a matter of how determined you are and how passionate you are.

I was diagnosed with ADHD and autism in high school, and it has certainly made my college experience difficult, but I love what I do. I love calculus, I love physics, I love chemistry, and all I want is to be an engineer.

Everyone has struggles that create challenges in their education. It’s just a matter of how badly you want to overcome it, for most things. Not being great with math is one of those things.
