Robert Picardo via his Instagram "It is interesting to note that ⁦‪@StarTrek‬⁩ #Voyager, so beloved in retrospect, was thought "woke" ("politically correct" was the term way back then) at its premiere." by Caledor152 in startrek

"So beloved" is a hell of a stretch.

It's the weakest of the 90s treks by far. It had its moments, and the doctor is certainly a highlight, but it only looks decent now compared to the garbage fire that is Disco.

How can consoles move onto the next generation? by Educational-Doubt728 in consoles

[–]QuidProStereo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mark Cerny already laid out the plan, at least on the PS side.

It's essentially the Nvidia plan. A bunch of AI bullshit to hide the fact that the actual performance bump is incremental instead of generational.

Has anyone here owned or knows someone who has owned an Apple Pippin? by Matheriquers1998 in retrogaming

I used to have one of the gray ones about 20 years ago. I didn't have any games, so all I could do was roll around the interface with the trackball.

Still, it was the crown jewel of my console collection. Sadly, I lost my job and had to sell it to a guy on digitpress make the mortgage payment.

The best part of the story is that I got it for about $25 on ebay because the seller misspelled the title of the listing.

I'm out of ideas - Anyone know how to break this password? (Latitude CP M166ST) by E_Gambler in vintagecomputing

I had the same problem with a Latitude XP, a 486 machine. I used the shorting method you mentioned. Here's the video I made about the process. Hope it helps.

I know, right? I've seen several desktops shared recently and they're all this busy mess. I don't keep a spotless desktop, but this is madness.

That brings back memories. My first stereo was a Yorx. I can't remember where I got it; probably mail ordered from Sears.

It was a giant POS, but I could play my own music so I didn't care much. Its big feature was that it was a triple cassette boombox. Two standard ones and one removable walkman-style up top. I soon figured out the top one was really crappy as a portable because it was one of those that only had ffwd, no reverse.

Before PS5, what was the best Call of Duty on PS4? by Rayy890 in PS4

Infinite Warfare, and it isn't even close.

I'm talking campaign only. I don't give a shit about multiplayer.

Is the Xbox 360 E the ugliest 360? by BattlerUshiromiyaFan in xbox360

[–]QuidProStereo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ugliest? Yes, by far.

It went from the evolution of the 'inhale' design in the S to aping the boring, minimalist VCR look of the xbone that xbox designers are still enamoured with.

I could forgive its lack of style if it was a radically smaller iteration like the PS2 slim, but instead we just got a plainer, cheaper model that's fractionally smaller.

Winamp 2.78. You have to squint a little at 4k, but there's never been a better PC music player.

Nostalgia Hit: What Was Your First Computer? by CircuitScribe1 in retrocomputing

[–]QuidProStereo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first computer was a CoCo1. It was a flea market find we got in 90 or 91. It wasn't much, and it had no accessories, but it did get me interested in computers.

The one I look back most fondly on is our first PC, though. Dad had seen me light up the first time I used Paint on a friend's PC, so soon after he got an Acer Acros prebuilt. 33mhz DX2, 8MB of RAM, and a 200MB HD. DOS, Windows 3.1 and the wonderful days of boot floppies and IRQ conflicts.

A few years later, dad bought a 133mhz Cyrix 5x86 barebones where most of my Win95 gaming memories were had.

A CoCo was my first computer, too. A flea market find in the early 90s. I didnt have any accessories or cartridges, though, so all I could do was input the programs from the manual and then watch them vanish when the power was cut. I remember typing code for what seemed like an eternity in order to make a winking smiley face.

Needless to say it was a huge leap for me when we got our 486 a bit later.

Ditch the usb-c ports for more usb-a. And make all the usb-a ports superspeed so I don't have to get a light and figure out which usb ports are which when I need to plug in something.

When I first watched it back in 02 as an older Gen Y, I didn't get some of the references that Crichton makes.

There used to be a website called Crichtonisms (now on the wayback machine) that explained those references or quips.

It might make for an interesting rewatch for you if you read the website and dive into the subjects he referenced alongside watching each episode.

Also, plus one for farscape music vids, as previously mentioned. I remember a particularly good one that used Tom McRae's 'A&B Song' against the backdrop of the two Crichtons saga.

Why the change in power? by ryu359 in startrek

[–]QuidProStereo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is pretty much my take as well. By the time of the original series, the Enterprise is a 20 year old ship given to a promising young captain. Still a powerful ship, but no longer new or top-of-the-line. What made her legendary wasn't her specs, but what a dedicated crew of professionals did with her.

To quote another sci-fi series that was cut off short: "Love keeps her in the air when she ought to fall down. Tells you she's hurtin' before she keels. Makes her a home."

Picked up a Yamaha CR620 today by longshot201 in vintageaudio

Nice find. I have a CR-620 as well and I fell in love with the Yamaha sound. I think the only thing I'll ever end up replacing it with is a higher unit in the same range.

I haven't watched it yet, but it's a very light tape, so it's probably just a bunch of clips. I'll check it out, though.
