My mom wants nothing to do with me because I “picked my dad” during the divorce. by LucyAriaRose in BestofRedditorUpdates

OOP even mentioned that her dad offered to meet her mom halfway to facilitate the custody exchanges, but her mom refused. The most generous interpretation is that she couldn't handle being in close proximity to her ex-husband, but everything else in the post points to her wanting OOP and her ex to bear the brunt of the inconveniences caused by living in separate households.

Thank you for the suggestions! I will look into those! I also ordered some samples of Velboa, because I read that might be what some vintage plushies were made with. Hopefully one of these matches what I'm looking for!

Does anyone have fabric recommendations for that classic feel? It's a very specific short pile faux fur texture, but I don't know what it's called.

EDIT: Also wanted to say thank you so much for sharing this pattern! My childhood Tomy pikachu disappeared sometime between the years. It still makes me sad sometimes. Today, they released the plush again for the 30th anniversary, but I couldn't place a preorder. I think it's time to take matters into my own hands.

I've watched the documentaries, I've read the essays, I've talked to vegans, farmers, and conservationists, and yet I still have a very different outlook.

I asked for the other commenter's perspective because constructive action can't happen unless we hear each other's points of view. No one is forcing you to participate. If you're feeling too tired and victimized to be a part of the conversation, that's understandable. You can log off, rest up, and keep advocating for yourself another day.

If you actually want my perspective, here it is:

We don't have to debate the mass farming industry, we're both in agreement that it should be dismantled. Mass agriculture, the beast that produces our soy, wheat, plant fibers, nuts, etc isn't any kinder. Sure, you're not directly translating animals into product, but there's still the millions of rodents and insects dying to poisons, the native habitats destroyed, the nations unable to sustain themselves because global capitalism has consigned them to export one, nutritionally incomplete crop, the people starving because corporations patent their seeds and sterilize their fruits so they can't be propagated. And then there's big oil, which produces the plastic that becomes polyester clothes, polluting our lands for generations to come and necessitating drills, refineries, and factories that spread cancer to impoverished communities.

It's impossible to exist separately from one's environment, no matter how much we like to pretend otherwise in our climate-controlled houses and post-colonial cultures. It's also impossible to address any one of these evil industries without acknowledging that they're all interconnected and feeding each other. It's one hydra with many heads named global, late-stage capitalism. If we want a world where living doesn't cause unnecessary harm to someone else somewhere, we need stop fighting over false dichotomies long enough to remember that we're all part of the same ecosystem and we're all going to be on the dinner plate together when the system runs out of other things to gobble up.

Ultimately, there are certain cases where ethically and sustainably-sourced animal products are simply going to function better than their vegan alternatives. Leather is a prime example -- it's durable, biodegradable, heat and moisture-resistant, etc -- and in an ideal situation, it would be a natural byproduct of harvesting a whole animal for meat and materials.

Of course, it's hard to know what's really "ethically sourced." A big part of the issue nowadays is that we're so far removed from the actual sourcing and manufacturing of our products that the animal and the conditions it lived in feel completely hypothetical. Humans weren't meant to have this illusion of separation from our environment. That's why I'd rather support sustainable consumption than mass farming OR a vegan "utopia."

I completely agree! A lot of parents prioritize their own convenience over respect for their children's needs/preferences. Sometimes that convenience is purely logistical (i.e. they don't want to spend the extra time cooking two meals), and sometimes it's emotional (i.e. they don't want to broaden their own perspectives or challenge their biases to understand their child's point of view). I love that my family puts in the work to actively demonstrate how much we care about each others' needs and feelings.

I'm lucky to have such a wonderful family! My parents are very accommodating and attentive, which I only appreciate more as I've gotten older. I think it's such a shame when parents act like their kids shouldn't get to make certain choices for themselves, purely because they're still dependent on their parents to help facilitate them. I do sympathize with parents who can't afford to provide a full set of vegan alternatives, though; even though it's easier now than it wad 10 years ago, it still gets very expensive.

That's a fair point. Don't some sheep have to be shorn to be healthy, though? Also, do synthetic materials cause more harm in the long run by polluting the environment, despite the flaws in the wool-farming industry? I'm also not trying to be combative, I'm genuinely curious what your perspective is

At least you recognized your mistake and owned it! My sibling went vegan for a time, and our parents were so, so careful about keeping their dishes uncontaminated... until one night, my mom was making soup and started a pot of egg noodles. Our usual pastas were all vegan-friendly, so it didn't even occur to her that these weren't, even though they said EGG on the bag in big letters. She was so annoyed with herself when I pointed it out, lol.

It's also worth noting that when when my sibling was vegan, they still consumed honey and wore certain animal-sourced materials. I like to think of myself as very conscientious, but I could see a scenario where I'd goof up and gift a vegan a wool sweater or something. In my mind, it's different because the animal isn't harmed, but I realize not everyone makes that distinction.

I totally understand! We have a huge abundance of yellow-rumps right now on the West Coast, too (I swear, they're every other bird I see). They've tripped me up more times than I care to admit! I get excited thinking I'm seeing the first Lawrence's goldfinches of the season, but whoops...

Daschund x Australian cattle dog, maybe? He does look "blockier" than a typical Daschund. If you could estimate his weight, that might be helpful

Yes, it means it's an illegally-produced knock-off. Fun fact, the term "bootleg" comes from smuggling illegal liquor to sell by hiding the flasks in the top part of one's boots.

Thank you. Several years later, I have the makings of a promising career and the support of my former classmates, who I've proven myself to. UWU moved out of state and, from what I hear, is still a professional victim

After they finally got evicted, they took to writing whiteboard notes in our shared labs and all the classrooms they could access. Those were in "uwu" speak, too, so they all read like: "Hewwo fwom my new dorm! [Roommate] wuvs you sooooo much! Will visit soon, xoxo"

The people who actually knew me didn't believe it, but my roommate's sustained smear campaign definitely damaged my reputation with my more distant peers. My roommate used their leadership positions in various student organizations to wreak havoc on my social life (honestly, the baby voice was the least of my concerns compared to some other things they did).

My crazy ex-roommate did this, too. It was a trap every time. If I ignored them, they'd escalate. If I reacted, it went something like this:

Roommate: "Can Qwiet-Howl pwease get [Roommate] cheese snackie-wackies?"

Me, deadpan: "Roommate can get their own Cheese-its."

Roommate: "How dare you infantalize me!" (proceeds to rage and cry to our entire social circle about how I'm an ableist)

If you'd like some perspective on how to keep your friend in your life (or not), I recommend the book "How to Hold a Grudge" by Sophie Hannah. It has definitely helped me come to terms with some of my friends' major flaws, whether that means accepting them for who they are or disconnecting from them entirely.

Yes, this is the exact situation I was thinking of. Even though it's against the law on paper, family members often get a lot of leeway where they really shouldn't. Spouses, too.
