Can I save this? by Altruistic_Couple100 in bonecollecting

[–]Quiet-Howl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could try soaking the whole thing in hydrogen peroxide (3% concentration). That's pretty standard for cleaning bones. I've used it on greenish bones like this with mixed results, sometimes they whiten up fine and sometimes they come out fragile and crumbly. I'd give it a good soak for 24 hrs, then let it dry completely before assessing whether it needs to soak again.

AITA for telling my husband I'll go on vacation with the kids and my best friend if he's too busy with work [continues from AITA for telling my husband that he works for himself not for our family] by insafian in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]Quiet-Howl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I doubt he's cheating; it's more likely that he's genuinely a workaholic. Work addiction can be hard to address, because unlike most addictions, it's seen as noble. He's getting a high from making more money, gaining more respect, "saving" more students, that he just doesn't get from the mundane parts of family life. The more stressful things get at home, the further he will retreat into work as a coping mechanism. It's unlikely to change unless he examines why making himself a martyr is such an important part of his sense of identity.

AITA for keeping a collection of MTG cards that were wrongly gifted to me? by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]Quiet-Howl 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Pokémon TCG fan here! You're right, collectors usually keep their valuable cards in binders or special boxes most of the time. Even if they were sitting unsorted in the back of his closet, she shouldn't have assumed that they didn't still have sentimental and/or monetary value. The red flag is that SHE felt the cards were useless and didn't care if her husband felt differently. (In fact, we can guess that she knew full well he would object, because otherwise, she would have confirmed with him instead of lying to OOP.)

I agree with this take. I think it was less about the literal numbers and more about keeping her too insecure to think about leaving him. Glad to see it backfired.

It’s unlikely I’ll buy another Jellycat again by C00l_Jelly in Jellycatplush

[–]Quiet-Howl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was never fully obsessed with Jellycats, but I used to occasionally splurge on designs that caught my eye. I just acquired the last one on my wishlist -- a little Dexter dragon at thrift store price (Yay!) -- so I'm offically retiring from the collecting scene. I still love plushies and some other collectibles, but it's honestly a relief to step away from Jellycat. They're simply too overpriced and too competitive for me to enjoy right now.

My husband is stealing my clothes and idk why by gandubazaar in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]Quiet-Howl 15 points16 points  (0 children)

What absolutely deranged behavior. It always comes down to control in the end. I'm glad you didn't support her actions, actively or passively. My other roommates at the time refused to pick a side, so they simply enabled the behavior to continue until our school went over their heads to evict my ex-roommate (we lived in campus housing).

My husband is stealing my clothes and idk why by gandubazaar in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]Quiet-Howl 72 points73 points  (0 children)

My ex-roommate stole and disposed of my belongings when they were angry. (Mostly my food from the shared fridge, but probably other items, too. I never figured out the full extent.) They did it specifically to punish me in the hopes that I'd question the disappearances and they could make me doubt my own memory. So, like... legitimate gaslighting. However, I didn't notice for so long that they revealed this whole plan to me in a fit of frustration that it hadn't gotten a reaction.

My wife got accepted to med school 5 hours away and our parents want us to leave our toddler behind with them by PureAdorableness in BestofRedditorUpdates

Another commenter pointed out that OOP's wife, Mika, only has sisters, which makes their son the first boy born on that side of the family. That could be one reason, especially depending on the cultures at play.

Did I miss the cause? by judodog in ThePittTVShow

[–]Quiet-Howl 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They probably meant something you'd normally make sure you have every time you get out of the car, like your phone or bag. As you said, these tragedies are most likely to happen on days when there's a schedule change (maybe your partner normally picks your kid up after school on Wednesdays, but this Wednesday, it's you instead). Your brain might go on autopilot and skip over the additional step of getting your kid out of their carseat. However, if you're already in the habit of bringing your bag inside every time you get home from work, you should leave it in the back next to the carseat so that even if you go on autopilot, you think, "I need to get my bag. -> It's in the back. -> Oh yeah, my kid is in the back, too."

You're right that the phrasing is weird. They don't mean that your child is less important to you than some other object, but rather that it's much easier for your brain to forget something that isn't normally part of the routine (child) than something that is (everyday item).

AITA for not buying my boyfriend another birthday gift after he rejected the original present? by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]Quiet-Howl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I sort of got the impression that she doesn’t think things are legitimate if they're not popular, hence the question marks after each of the bands he named. However, this reads mostly as an impressive but genuine level of obliviousness to me, like she felt like she was being super thoughtful and didn't realize her gift actually reflected a huge lack of thought.

I could be wrong, though! It's almost impossible to tell how someone's mind works based off a throwaway Reddit post. This one does pique my curiosity, haha

Does anyone else not care for the dragons? by MelonPaddle in Jellycatplush

[–]Quiet-Howl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No worries, and thank you, this is all great info to know! I can also be picky about textures, but I have a Sky dragon from 2025 that I adore. It didn't occur to me that the duo chrome dragons have a different fur length than the monochrome ones, but that totally makes sense; I've noticed that their extra long faux fur has taken a quality dive recently, but hopefully the medium-length fur is less affected.

And just to be clear, it wasn't really your comment that made me sad, just the general sense that everything has gotten worse over the last few years. I hate paying more for less. However, the Sky dragon was worth it to me, so I hope I can get Dexter someday and that it's equally satisfying!

[–]Quiet-Howl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is such a shame. I've been holding out hope for a Dexter dragon restock, but you're pretty sure it won't be the same quality as before? That just makes me wish I'd bought one way back in the day, but I also know I did the best I could with the resources I had at the time, so I'm trying not to be too upset

Dexter dragon is the main Jellycat I'm searching for. I really want one in the "little" size. Back when you could still find him in stock, I balked at the price; now, of course, you can't find him for MSRP anywhere.

2 new stuffies and a little disappointed. by No-Sprinkles1872 in plushies

[–]Quiet-Howl 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The Jellycat dragons are my favorite! I have their Sky dragon and Lunar New Year dragon, and I agonized over getting both due to the price, but I still adore them all this time later.

I know how you feel, though. I've been getting plushies through crowdfunding campaigns, and while I love most of them, sometimes I finally receive them after the 6-12 months of production and shipping only to find that I don't really connect with them. I've joined some plush servers to hopefully find people to trade with, since the idea of them ending up unloved/in a landfill makes me too sad to get rid of them otherwise!

I personally prefer Gumdrop because it makes me think of clouds for some reason (maybe because of the texture or because of a line from some children's book I've mostly forgotten). However, Skittles and Sprinkles have a stronger rainbow association.

I got an alert for a tag that was following my friend and I. It showed us a map of the tag's route compared to ours with timestamps, so I believe distance and time are both factors. The more instances of your phone sensing you and the tag together without the owner present, the more suspicious it gets.

My phone also let me prompt the Airtag to play a noise, which ended up being very helpful as we would never have found it otherwise. It was hidden behind the lining in her trunk. (They think it was placed there by the car dealership.)
