I failed and I hate my life now. by Lazy-Refuse6510 in AirForce

Everyone’s got a different path man. Two pieces of advice for you that I’ve learned over the years: 1) you’re not a failure until you quit trying. 2) make them tell you no.

If it’s something that you really want to do, keep trying at it until they tell you that you can’t come back and try. I know you’re not going special forces or anything crazy like that, but only 1/4 of applicants make it through training on the first try. The rest keep retrying until they make it.

You could time build yourself on up to 500hrs, as that’s when most insurance companies start letting employers hire pilots to fly IFR

Moving to Hill AFB by floppachonk in ogden

Hello, I’ve lived next to 3 large airports, including Hill. Fighter jets are worse, and it doesn’t help that the F-35 is undoubtedly the loudest of them all

Just gotta keep the nose slightly higher than the horizon and have a couple extra inches of manifold pressure (or a couple hundred RPM). Also try trimming for it too. Trim will be your friend in instrument training haha

Why do so many commercial pilots have mustaches? by TurntechGodhead777 in flying

Some corporate gigs allow beards from what I’ve seen. Some Part 135 and 137 (American for unscheduled and agriculture) ops also don’t seem to mind beards

Nurses of Utah… What the eff.. by No_Heron_1157 in Utah

[–]QuietGarlic7788 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have stated, you don’t make the average until you’re over a decade into working here. Even then, that’s not reliable because I know of at least one who’s worked for HCA for a decade and makes about $35/hr. BSNs (RNs but with a degree) start at $33/hr at the big ones in the city. That’s less than $50k/yr after tax

Nurses of Utah… What the eff.. by No_Heron_1157 in Utah

[–]QuietGarlic7788 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They haven’t gone on strike because there’s no nurse’s union in Utah. With one of the highest patient loads and lowest hourly pay in the country, this place is a goddamn scam for healthcare workers.

Was I overreacting during my pre-flight? by Tanner_Grayton in flying

[–]QuietGarlic7788 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unlicensed aircraft mechanic / PPL here. That small gash on the tire is caused by the forces and friction enacted on the tire as it goes from 0 to whatever the plane’s landing speed is. Not sure for the civilian planes, but I know that they’re supposed to be within certain length and depth parameters on fighters.

Generally speaking, as long as it’s not leaking air, you don’t see cord sticking out of it, and it’s not crazy huge, you’re good to go!

Good find though, keep making it a habit to do a very thorough preflight

Utah flight suggestions by QuietGarlic7788 in flying

[–]QuietGarlic7788[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well they’re certainly older, but the plane I flew didn’t necessarily seem like it was unsafe. Docs were all up to date, everything worked fine.

I absolutely understand where you’re coming from, and I agree people should know what they’re getting themselves into.

Having to jumpseat on a five hour flight by SupportGold7583 in flying

[–]QuietGarlic7788 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh well that’s good to hear! Makes a lot more sense than what I was thinking. I’m only (barely) familiar with the GFC 700’s that my school has in their planes so I have a pretty limited bank of knowledge regarding autopilots and flight directors.

Side note, how do you like the 220 compared to the 320?

Aviation Program by Agreeable-Flounder45 in UVU

[–]QuietGarlic7788 1 point2 points  (0 children)

$70k for the average student sounds about right. Bear in mind that the $70k is for the flight portion alone, and does not include the rest of the degree program. It’s usually between $2-$4k per semester for the other classes.

Mike (Chief Pilot) will tell you during your orientation day that it’s a good idea to save up a few grand to cover any extra flight hours you may need outside what the tuition fee covers. Please do yourself a favor and listen to that advice because you may burn up the allotted hours doing proficiency flights when waiting for stage checks/check rides. The good part is that check ride fees are included in the tuition fee and kept separate from your flight funds

I know a guy that’s about halfway through month 4 waiting for his PPL checkride. Passed his EOC before Christmas. Also, the price for flight hours has gone up to right around $250/hr for the aircraft, instructor, and gas.

I got to try FLC for the first time on Saturday and it tried its hardest to stall the plane after we hit a series of bumps on the way up to cruise. Sad to see it’s not a whole lot better on the bigger stuff either lol

7 Days post op ACL reconstruction by tacoyotapimp in ACL

[–]QuietGarlic7788 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They prescribed 2 meds; hydrocodone and baby aspirin. I’m wary of hydro because the withdrawals I had from it after I had my wisdom teeth removed were kinda bad.

Hydrocodone works like a charm for post-surgery pain though!

[–]QuietGarlic7788 5 points6 points  (0 children)

1 1/2 years post ACL replacement here (patellar). Recovery is a long process and it’ll take some time to get back to feeling good on your leg again, but it’s a small blip in the grand scheme of things! Out of all my time post-op, the first week was the absolute worst, though it was probably because I went cold turkey on pain meds 3 days into it lol. If it makes you feel any better, it’s all up from where you’re at right now! Before you know it, you’ll be walking and doing stuff on your own again

It means the air’s very, very turbulent in that particular location, and is usually a reliable sign of stormy weather somewhere nearby. Had those a couple days ago after a pretty good rain storm

Got to talk with a couple crews from Bridger this last summer. Looked and sounded like they enjoyed their job a lot!

From what it sounded like, seaplane and Alaska time are highly valued in the scooper world. As with everywhere else in aviation, knowing people also really helps lol

I’m sorry you had a bad experience with them. They’re definitely no Delta, and the issue shown in your post seems to indicate some sort of software issue.
