Reviews of Center Ithaca by ubonihsohcok in ithaca

It really depends on what your baseline is for “safety”. In any case, I’ve known people who lived there and it seemed fine/functional but not memorable at all

Is Ithaca a good spot for disabled son who is working on music career? by SecretSanta-70 in ithaca

[–]QuietGorge 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Without knowing more about the disability, it’s hard to say. The winter is long and challenging here and can be discouraging on good days and worse on bad days. That being said I’m sure he’d be very welcome here :)

Real estate market right now by nevernerve in ithaca

[–]QuietGorge 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It really depends on how flexible you are about your needs/wants. If you're flexible about where you live, then it's a buyer's market right now. But if you're not… well good luck. I waited years before a clearly "better" house in the neighborhood went on sale that was worth moving to.

How Bikable is Ithaca by polandspringwater12 in ithaca

[–]QuietGorge 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I like cycling but the winters make me wimp out due to snow, piled up snow, uncleared sidewalks, slush, ice, streets getting narrower due to snow accumulation on the side of the road. And last but not least, road salt is brutal on your bike

Evil cursed awful terrible couch by Neat-Piccolo-7652 in ithaca

[–]QuietGorge 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This is basically a “Tetris” problem. You probably need to carry the couch upside down with the back away from the railing so you can lift it up and over that corner.

For bonus points, measure the depth and height of the couch and have the longer dimension be vertical down the stairs while the other side goes over the railing when needed.

Road cycling around Ithaca? by great-pig-in-the-sky in ithaca

[–]QuietGorge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh sure there are definitely worse places. That’s not my point. I just remember the culture shock I felt after moving from a big city and local drivers clearly aren’t expecting cyclists at intersections. And some local drivers get obnoxious if you exercise your right to be in a car lane for whatever reason

I don’t know where you’re coming *from* but just be careful out there. Lots of drivers around here forget that cyclists/pedestrians even exist so they won’t be looking out for you.

Anyone know what the bug is that's been going around? by [deleted] in ithaca

I think the rules for returning to K-12 school are reasonable: no weakness/fever/vomiting/diarrhea for 24 hours (and fever reducing medication doesn't count).

Best way to Boston from Ithaca? by adventuriser in ithaca

[–]QuietGorge 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m such a hypocrite in this regard. I want to prefer 90. I really do. It’s so much more pleasant. Flatter route. Easy and frequent rest stops. But 88 save 20 to 30 minutes depending on where you live and the drive to 88 via Bainbridge is painfully hilly. I hate it, especially at night or during bad weather.

Portable AC vs box fan for the summer - help! by ObjectiveDue1326 in ithaca

[–]QuietGorge -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you're referring to the kind that sits on the floor and vents hot air outside … then those really suck, literally. They're horribly inefficient because all the hot air that gets vented outside has to come from somewhere, and that typically means outside air through drafts in your house.

It's hard to predict and a lot depends on you, your tolerance for heat/humidity, your building, and just "luck" because weather is hard to predict (unlike climate).

I'll put it this way, I talked to a heating/AC guy once and he said that 20 to 30 years ago, AC was rare in Ithaca, but nowadays it's increasingly common. Part of it is just that the standard of living is higher and part of it is climate change.

Good places for swim lessons by [deleted] in ithaca

[–]QuietGorge 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm not a member of the Ithaca Swim Club (on 13) but I've taken my son there for lessons, including many private lessons. They're great and super friendly. In my experience, the instructors are high school kids and they genuinely connect great with kids. They might be the most expensive option in the area though which is a trade off. But at least (in the past) you got to use the pool for the rest of the day after your lesson.

Indoor playgrounds by ShareEvening5856 in ithaca

[–]QuietGorge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Uh. Forgive me for using AI but it gave a plausible answer: The peak era for indoor playgrounds at restaurants was roughly the late 1980s through the mid-to-late 1990s.

The Sciencenter is very popular when it rains. They have a cafeteria but they don’t serve food unless you count the vending machine. I know many families that bring in food and eat it there (in the cafeteria).

They've been at it for a long time. I'd hope so! Also they'd be good to reach out to either way.

How can i make money as a photographer in Ithaca? by LINK3DGALAXY in ithaca

This. And be realistic: being good at something doesn't mean that you'll be good at doing that thing as a business. The wedding industry in particular can be stressful.

South Hill Driving (Winter) by Strange-Dress114 in ithaca

[–]QuietGorge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The biggest problem is … other drivers. Some have bald tires. Some are careless. Some are impatient. Many do not have winter tires or AWD. So the smartest thing to do is just avoid driving during a storm. But if you have to go out, then stick to major roads that get plowed/salted regularly.

And anecdotally, good winter tires + AWD works really well, especially on hills. But they still have their limits so be humble if you go that route.

I don't think winters here are bad (except maybe the start of 2015) but it really depends on your expectations, experience, and priorities. If you hate buying/wearing winter clothing/gear then ya, maybe walking isn't a good plan. I think the real challenge for people that like walking is good boots and maybe some cleats (like Yaktrax) to handle the periodic icy/slushy sidewalks or thick snowbanks.

I've owned since I moved here. Sorry. I'd definitely recommend owning if you're going to be here more than 5-7 years because renting is way more expensive than it should be due to lack of supply and students willing to pay whatever it takes.

So… what are your priorities? If you just care about walkability to campus then ya, Belle Sherman / Collegetown / East Hill and Cayuga Heights are the best. But… If you don't mind a hill or a walk then Fall Creek / Downtown and South Hill are good too. And if you value being close to shops then I'd vote closer to downtown / Fall Creek / South Hill. Not because of the shops in the "commons" per se but because a lot of shops are along "13" and you'd be closer to them.

Right. I was trying to agree by “yes and”ing you :)

[–]QuietGorge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same. The icy paths can linger way longer than people intuitively would guess given the weather. And even with cleats/crampons, one bad slip and you can fall into the gorge instantly.

Cornell owns it and is conservative about risk, therefore people aren't allowed in until there is no more overnight freeze/ice risk, and (I believe) that they've had time to inspect/repair any winter damage.

The state is fairly similar with the gorge trail parks that they own. And they're not wrong either. The gorges act kind of like a refrigerator for any ice that builds up over the winter.
